In a nutshell, what are the minimum avid requirements for handling P2 MXF's?

You should post and search here for up to date informatioon exclusive to Avid.

On a Mac - G5 Dual processor
On a PC - 3 ghz Zeon (Dual)

2 gigs of ram (3-4 is better)
Dedicated SATA drives (if you're doing single streams).

Remaining calm, having patience and spending to much money...
But those are the overall requirements for handling Avid off course... :)

that is overkill - we are editing a feature with a 3.0 P4 - 4 gigs ram, firewire disk array. It can display 2 streams smooth - 3 streams watchable

Well I should bemore specific: There are a variety of Avid products, xpressdv, express pro, composer, symphony etc.

Not being familiar with all things avid, my inquiry has to do with what is the minimum level of avid that can handle P2 MXF files and I would assume anything above that could as well. It is a little more confusing than final cut where if you are above 5.04 you can import MXF and that's about it.

avid xpress pro HD 5.0 and above can handle the MXF files - make sure you research the workflow - its not just importing the files

"A resonabley configured workstation, such as a 2.48GB Athalon." is what the Avid product manager I recently interviewed said about Xpress Pro for doing native HDV. Bear in mind that DVCPRO-HD requires MUCH less horsepower than native HDV editing.

Overkill - you have 4 gigs of ram and a Firewire array (RAID). That's a serious setup:thumbup:

But I'd still suggest a Dual Processor Computer for anyone making the purchase. Single processor CPU's are being fazed out.

I had no problems with realtime playback on a P4 2.8HT and 512MB RAM laptop.

Would you tell your friend to go get a P4 computer with 512 megs of ram to edit a client project in HD?

i was suggesting that memory is important - but sata drives are not - you can get an external drive and get real time performance
