On settings 1 and 3 my handle zoom works but on setting 2 it does absolutely nothing... please tell me this is my own stupidity and that my camera is not broken... :(

The camera is not broken!
To get the #2 setting on the handle zoom to work you will need to set it up in the menu.
Camera Menu > 3. SW Mode > Handle Zoom
You have the option of either
1) L/OFF/H * <-- your current setting.
2) L/M/H

Yeah that's a pretty good idea.
I could have learned some things a while ago.
I'm just super lazy about instructions and manuals.
I should probably work on that though, as it may cost me greatly some day.
