What are you guys' thoughts on how they made these commercials? I was shooting the sh!t with an associate, and he had a theory on how they do it. I said, "it sounds like a decent theory, but I'll bet that's not how they went about it".

Well, now it's buggin me cause I can't find any more info on it, and I'd like to prove him wrong ;)

yeah I think its the real deal. they have the budget to smash cars together so why not. I dont think its real from the interior shots though.

There is a simlar shot in the movie "The Forgotten" as well as in the Season 4 finale of Alias... maybe there's some bts somewhere on one of those two DVDs....

I think that the Allstate commercial's rock. With the Slow mo Coffee falling out of the cup, I love it.

Yep.. All good ones. I tried a small test a while back. Nothing like the ones mentioned here, but just to start playing with the idea. It was all shot from the interior back when I had a GL-2. I'll see if I can dig up the clip.

Punch Drunk Love has a nice on as well.

the trick is simple: it's amazing how much damage extremely low-speed crashes can do to modern cars. the compression rate designed to protect the occupants of the car causes some spectacular damages to cars. just try hitting a new car with your fist and see what happens.

without knowing anything about the actual shoot I'm guessing they had some cars with extra inside protection, oversensitive airbags and all the protection between the roll cage and the outer shell gone. that would cause major mess with minor impact.

on that note I strongly advise noone try anyhting like that wihtout the help of professional stunt people and coordinators. I've seen the results of "fun" "make believe" crashes and it aint pretty.

Adaptation too.

It could be a greenscreen effect with the people sitting in a car that gets shoved, etc. But my guess is it's just real.

Or sitting on one. I left a butt-print on mine.

Hmmm... that's a good theory. Very well could be how it's done.
