I was up late last night and saw Scarface on AMC. While I didn't like it the first time I saw it , I thought I'd watch it again to see if my opinion had changed. It hadn't.... BUT I have a question, Has anyone noticed that Charles Durning's voice was dubbed over the cop's in the opening interrogation scene? What's the deal there?

In the opening sequence with Tony Montana (Al Pacino (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000199/)) and the immigration officers, Charles Durning (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001164/)'s voice has clearly been used to overdub an actor playing one of the officers. Another of the officers is dubbed by Brian De Palma (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000361/) regular Dennis Franz (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001240/). If you listen carefully, Al Pacino (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000199/) also had to overdub his own voice at three or four different points in the same scene.
You didn't like SCARFACE ?

I very much like Scarface, but still say The Untouchables is De Palma's opus.

As crazy as it sounds, I think my favorite De Palma film is Body Double. Followed closely by Carlito's Way and Scarface. And I don't think anyone ever did a better job on a Stephen King story than De Palma did with Carrie.

....no, I didn't like Scarface... ju godda prolem wid dat?....I just didn't believe any of it.....Just seemed really hokey..... It's amazing to me that he's become such an icon.....I've spent some time these past few years around Humboldt Park in Chicago..... And I'm always amused by the multitude of Scarface mirrors and posters that I see for sale on the street corners.........BTW, I hated Life Aquatic...still haven't seen Rushmore or Bottle Rocket....and the Tennenbaum hype kept me away..... oh...and I like "Art Films" too........:dankk2:...anything else?

Can you be more specific why you didn't like Scarface, ofcourse you're entilted to you opinion, I'm just currious why you didn't like it. There were alot more things going on in that film then him being a notorious drug dealer... I could go on and on.. but what did it for me was his relationship with his sister and mother.
And I agree with you with him being imortalize like this, every young punk now think their Scarface... to jump off topic, my favorite DePalma film has to be Carlito's Way.. beatiful... I'm a sucka for a good love story... and the love story in that film was so good eventhough it's a Gangsta Movie...

Have you even seen Scarface in its proper form ?
Widescreen ?
You didnt like it ? Whats not too like ? It swidely considered Pacinos greatest role, it launched Michelle Pfieffer and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonios careers, written by Oliver Stone (Beofre he was Oliver Stone) ....
It was like Miami Vice on Roids. And De Palma at his just best. This is the guy who brought us Blow OUt and Carrie and The Untouchabes and Dressed to KIll and Body Heat ..
The Chainsaw scene alone is amazing
F Murray Abraham (Pre Amadeus) is great in this film !
Scarface inspired a generation of gangster films and fimmakers ..
It is like the '80's caught on tape'
It even has Elizabeth Daily songs in it.

How could you not like it ?

I didn't really think Scarface was the BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME like everyone makes it seem like. I mean, honestly I'm sick of hearing about it being hailed as so AMAZING! It's freaking opinion! Anyway, I've seen better movies. dummie faces.
Love the movie - De Palma at possibly the top of his game (although Carlito's Way is right up there too).
But I have always disliked Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio's acting - particularly in that role. Weirdly OTT for my tastes (watch her as she "listens" during the film).
It's strange to me because even the smallest roles in that film (Manuel Padilla Jr. for example) were so transparent, so perfectly cast that somehow she feels really outside the film/oddly placed.
IMHO

I don't think anyone here is asserting it is the "BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME"...just a damned good movie.

I don't want to get into a whole debate with you like coltrain. You liked it, I didn't. Nothing's gonna change that....but ....all of those things you mentioned are probably the reasons I didn't like it. The 80's were mostly boring to me.... especially the music... Hated "Miami Vice".... I turned most of (the 80's) it off, I think...Hardly feel it's Pacino's greatest role/performance... Sonny in "Dog Day..." was far more interesting to me...I even like his character in "Author, Author"....and Michael Corleone?....holy bajeebus!!......I fell for Pfeiffer after I saw her in "Grease 2" (yeah, it sucked too...but she was HOT!)..... some are gonna say, if you think "Scarface" was hokey, you missed the point...it was supposed to be hokey ...or as some say, over the top, just like Tony Montanna....ok.... then I missed it.... I don't get it.....and I didn't like it.

OK, opinions are always entitled, but you couldn't find anything to like?
Violence that is brutal yet beautiful.
Great art direction and cinematography.
An excellent score by Giorgio Moroder.
Inifinitely quotable lines.
DePalma's best synthesis of his infamous ripped-off movie techniques.
A great cast with roles that suit the actors.
A smattering of hot chicks.
"Little guy makes it big, then a little too big, then falls." Not original, but compelling.
Well, I could go on and on... lots of good things about this film. It's not perfect, but very few are even close to perfect. I think the visceral quality of Scarface is one of its strongest attributes.
Maybe the violence turns you off. The ads and buzz are very clear about the content, so maybe that's something to consider next time.
Don't let the "gangsta" worship of the film turn you off. My parents even loved the movie, and that really surprised me.

....no no... violence and gangsters don't turn me off... I love Goodfellas, I love Donnie Brasco...Godfathers 1&2 are my all time favs... I even really like Natural Born Killers....and was fascinated by Man Bites Dog....so...it's not the violence.... Like I said, the 80's have to be my least favorite decade for just about everything.... the music seemed cold and calculated,...no heart,...no soul...no feeling...... just blah.... I thought the riot scene in the tent city was phony.... thought the scene with Tony and his mother was phony..... I think Gina is creepy....maybe it's just I didn't give a shit about this guy..... I dunno.
