a problem with firewire

is there some kind of setting i need to set to have my computer reconize it through firewire i just reinstalled windows and now it reconizes my other digi cam but not the panasonic even in playback mode.

I hate to mention this, but the port may have died on you. Mine did this a few weeks ago. Acording to Panasonic even if you are still under warranty, they usually do not cover the firewire port (see International repair dilema in Hardware board) I hope this is not the case for you. But others lately have been dealing with the same issue. I really like my DVX, but this issue is a major problem.

Yes, firewire port can be a problem, but I saw on another posting that someone was able to get theirs serviced under warranty. The only problem is they had to wait almost an eternity for parts to be available.

Yes I read that too. Although just a few days ago I heard from Jan, the Panasonic rep who posts here, telling me it was unlikey that I could get it fixed under warranty. I am still trying to get it done, but that message did not raise my hopes.
