Yep! It's official... I almost made the deadline. I was so close too. I sat up all night trying to crack it out, but ran out of time with a 90% completed project.:(. Even though It will be way too late to submit, I'm gonna finish working on it after work today, just to have it completed. If you are in the same boat, join the team.
Too bad huh? maybe next time. "Guess the KINDRED will have to WAIT a lot longer":Drogar-Smoke(DBG):
Thanks for all the positive motivation. It was fun.

Dude, that is too bad! Are you sure you can't knock it out?
I gave up at some point in the night/early morning but fearless dvxuser came to my rescue and got me up and loaded!!!

I worked all day yesterday to finish. Didnt get everything I wanted done, but tried to submit it and I think the picture got stretched thru the h264 codec not sure if it even got there, cuz I went to bed at 11 while the transfer was going thru....
I know alot of people were having trouble, so maybe you still have a chance to submit it.
Cynic821
10-02-2006, 10:58 AM
i think the chance to submit is only for people who are done with the projects and having probs uploading, not for non completed projects that still havnt been exported and zipped. idunno though, need to wait for Jarred to get back tonight

Sounds like " Mr hope I don't make it" LOL
Like I said Its basically done. I'm just having trouble with finalizing it. My system is running on E. I didn't have a chance to try and upload by the time I had to head for work.
I then see this post that has inspired me to try and make it. Thanks all.:thumbup:

i guess i can see how my post can be taken that way, wasnt meant to be , but i think the extra day is for distribution, if i had an extra day for production, it would be like having an eternity to make the movie even better! Good luck though, you put together some nice advertising stuff, i could never figure out how make an animated thing like you got there. :(
Brandon Rice
10-02-2006, 11:40 AM
Yeah, not sure if it's fair if you're still editing and whatnot right now... using the day to compress/upload is one thing... actually working on post is another.

saw it. I think its a software issue. Using vegas 7. Can't get the out puts right still trying. Even then the ftp thing I'm also having issues with. I wanted to send what I had in hopes of a chance to correct any mistakes in format, but just wanted to send it in. I've been through a lot for this movie, including missing work for a whole week and not being able to pay rent (I'm not b!tching) but all this just to try and make it and it's not going good right now. I'm at work and my boss is on my back. I'm gonna have to try and hopefully see if as soon as i get off, run home and pray for a chance to try again.

Upload issues i think is cool, but even compression issues i dont think is what Jarred had in mind for the extra day. Again, im not speaking for anyone, just what i was under the assumtion for. I had a discussion about how the voting / promotion were going and i didnt like it, but was told, that "thats the real world" and not having compression ready or working out those glitches are part of the real world in trying to replicate a film festival. Compression and readying the movie the best it can be is also part of it, imo.

You can't do h.264 in Vegas. We had to purchase Quicktime Pro and export from that.

the file alone wont allow you to have QT pro, you would have to get a serial number still.

ya man, you got it.
The only way I could get mine to work was to export from Premiere just the audio into a 48k wav. Dump the video only to a uncompressed avi (cause QT kept crashing). Then, open a new project and import the audio and video, set the ins/outs and let it render. Then, I was able to put in in Squeeze and after about 5 times rendering I found a good version to go with. ughh.. its a pain, but you've got it!
at least its not a major movie premiere where crowds of people are in the theatre and all the sudden the picture drops out, you can hear the director saying action and after cutting the film, they director gets up to the audience and says, "This was a teaser to the film and it's still a work in progress". (yes.. it happened. and... i laughed.) This place is different in that we all love this stuff and we can look beyond the 'bigger picture' as in the general audience/public usually cannot.

For Windows machines, WS_FTP has never failed me. It's been ROCK SOLID in my experience.
http://www.download.com/WS-FTP-Professional/3000-2160_4-10562420.html?tag=lst-0-2
This is the free, downloadable, 30-day trial version ($54.95 to buy). It's IP-protected, so you can't share (I had to buy TWO licenses for my two machines).

Quicktime is a fantastic container format, thank George Lucas. But it's much better implemented on a Mac and much more a part of that whole environment, if you know what I mean.
Brandon Rice
10-02-2006, 10:38 PM
I guess I agree.... working with Avid though, it's pretty much quicktime based... so I am really used to working with that format.

:Drogar-Thinking(DBG:Drogar-Sick(DBG):I finally got it work shortly after my last post & after attempting to upload about 100 times!!! The part that really gets me is....I was so busy looking at all the tutorials saying "get this app & vegas can't do this" I realized that I have Vegas7! And unlike it's older versions, this one has the MPEG2 & the H264 FILE CONVERTER!
I could shoot myself. I don't even wanna think of the money I just wasted on apps.
I really hope you all enjoy my movie. cause at this rate I'm liable to do a back-flip off the roof!:-BlackEye(DBG
Thank you to all that really pushed me to make it & try harder. I will have been taking names of those who have from time to time been there to give me that extra motivational boots, and I will find a way to repay the kindness. :Drogar-Evil(DBG)::thumbup:

Thanx! I couldn't have made it without you guys... Would you believe i'm still at my office. I'm so stoked and relieved I finally got it all over with, that I can't sleep.:Drogar-Evil(DBG): I feel like I just shot a Hollywood movie squeezed into a mini skit! I can't stop watching it. It's not very long. but I feel like i've accomplished so much in finally completing something for myself & this contest. THE REAL KICKER IS..... Wait till everyone finds out that this was a one man movie, acting and all!! including the camera work and special effects!!! That's what made this so important and fun for me. This will be first time I've done a project 100% me.:Drogar-Smoke(DBG):
I originally had a crew, cast & better location but at the starting point, they all fell off. Due to school, work or simple procrastination. But you know how that goes:happy:

Yeah. I did't expect this project to give me such a beat down. It has also taken a toll on me. I'm literally worn out! I'm seriously gonna treat myself to a hotel spa ( hopefully on someone else's account) as far away from any technology as possible this coming weekend. I'm definitely gonna sleeeeep like a brick tonight. That will be the first full nights sleep since this fest started.
Cheers buddy:beer: It's Miller Time!

Wow guys, I did the same too. My question: would you do it again?
did you have other issues like work, significant other, family etc. that made you wonder if it was all worth it? seems like a lot of people willingly give away their services (composer for instance) and stuff like that.
never thought anything for free was worth much, but seeing some of these films already made me realize they are lots of free and/or low cost resources that might make the one-man band concept a thing of the past. Then again, it is sooo much fun to answer the questions...
1. who wrote your screenplay? I did.
2. wow love the soundtrack, who did it? I did.
3. amazing camera work, who was the DP? I was.
4. colors really popped! can I hire your editor to do some color correcting? Sure, you're talking to him.
5. also makes movie posters *really* easy. Just list all the jobs, then slap your name on each and everyone.
here is a cool trick to really last long hours: little naps with caffeine. The trick goes like this:
1. drink a large amount of caffeine.
2. immediately lie down for 15-30 minute nap (the slower your metabolism, the longer the nap)
when you wake up, the caffeine will hit you like Jim Carrey on speed, PLUS you just had a 20 min or so rest and it's really all most of us need.
you can do that again and again for at least a couple of days!
TheatreGuy
10-03-2006, 10:04 AM
LOL! (that caffine bit is priceless)
And to answer your question... No. I really don't think that I would put myself as the lead in my own film again. If I had to, I guess... but I really had to limit what I could do as the DP. No moving shots and TONS of wasted footage running to the camera and back, not to mention all of the takes that I wasn't sure if I was in frame!
And the biggie is, I got TOO CLOSE to my project. As an actor, I was missing the beat at times. I found myself getting too concerned (more than an actor should be) with production quality and directorial decisions.
I love being able to do all my own work. I would tackle most of these positions in a single film again BUT not the acting part.
mameragex
10-03-2006, 06:00 PM
I might! only because I'm always fiddling with my camera, trying different things (Special effects and such) Besides, my movie making skills come from doing lil goofy home videos for my mom when I was little. So I get a kick out of amazing people and having them ask "How da HeLLz you do that!!!" Now what I wont do again is wait last minute. This time I had to wait till I could afford a light kit. Had all my props and storyline scripted and ready + graphics. But had no lights. It was a fun experience for me but it was also a long battle! As you said, I've been neglecting my girl & my job + my health (not eating or sleeping right) All because once I started I couldn't pull myself away. Oh and my stay up technique was tuning my PC speakers Up so when my hand fell asleep on the key I would hear a loud startling DING!!!!!!:Drogar-Dum(DBG): Nodoz would have been my choice, If I had some.
