Man, I'm so anxious to see this one. He's a friggin' beast!!!

Its always fun how you put out these casting calls... "Ummm.. I need someone to be really menacing and 'creepy out there' to scare the shite out of people..." Annd... who in the right mind says yes? Did you know the guy before hand?

The ranger in our short "Lakeside" was the same way. He's creepy, but that's what's putting food on the table and footage on the reel.

Thanks for the support! Yes we actually did know him previous to shooting, and he's actually one of the nicest dudes you will ever meet! That is until I call "action" and the terror ensues!:)

My favorite part of the whole process is watching this guy "Buffalo" come in and out of character! He really has the whole Fat, Sledgehammer wielding maniac thing down to a science.

Thanks again and I look forward to your films as well!

ya man.. This flick is intense.

It was a lil' dark for my tastes but that helped the mood. Music/Score/Ambience.. Wowa. creepy and fit the film nicely.

Ending was a little abrupt though, but leaves you wanting more.

The other issue I saw was the aspect ratio of the film. It really urked me to watch, but I suspended all beliefs like I do with every movie and looked past it.

I want to see more Buffalo!

( Posted from the original thread )

I couldn't find the original thread. You guys may need to have the others deleted.

Review | POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT! I watch the movies first time around strictly for enjoyment, second and third for review.

Visually awesome. Nice images. You'll have to talk a bit more about your process for getting distinct looking footage.

Script - Can't say that it isn't the new horror. Saw, Hostel, Buffalo Samson. You guys might get funding for a feature if you show this around. People are always looking for scripts like this. I can't say that it was awesome, it's definitely worth pitching for funding on an Indie level. Didn't finish itself off, really.

Direction - Great frame-ups. Great camera action going on in the torture scene. REALLy great choice of what to show and what not to show. I totally got the meat-hook. NICE.

Acting - Screams, terror. They all looked scared to me when they were suppsoed to be. They all looked like they wanted to have fun camping when it was time. Kudos to your guys and gals. Samson is mean.

Cine/Lighting - Well lit in all the right places, to me. Budget lighting rocks here. Camp-Fire scene looked like a camp-fire scene. Interrogation room looked cold and uninviting. Boiler/Basement looked gritty, wet, and threatning. REALLY nice visuals here and easily THE best attribute. Awesome stuff.

Editing - Not my profession, but the cuts were very today. I could see this on a DVD release for sure. Really timely edits. A great example is when the girl gets put up on the hook. Cut to her feet at the jerk... that sold it for me. I even cringed and I saw NOTHING.

Sound - Up there. Compressed even. I could hear it all and none of it sounded distracting. This round of fest entries is even sounding better.

Special Effects - I gotta say, if that wire had been razor wire I would've turned you rmovie off. The blood in the mouth from both heads being linked together was a nice NICE torture touch. The blood looked like blood to me, plenty of it. I can dig it.

Scariest Moments - The meat hook. That was a really strong portion of your short. It all went really well together and it sold the death.

Overall consensus - Lots of death scenes going on. I didn't really see it come around, seemed like it was definitely part of a larger piece which isn't bad. One of the best I've seen so far visually, really captured the current horror style going on. Good work! Glad you entered. Please don't hang anymore bodies on meat hooks.

2 words: Horror unleashed.
I have to agree with most things kholi writes above and to note one thing I wanted to see, in the final tense scene with the 2 actors tied with wires - the sequence is a bit long and when Buffalo comes in I would expect to hold a saw and cut them to pieces... seriously would bring it to a climax but it just stays at the level of terror and screaming.
Seen some movies so far, but with this one I think I'm sleeping with the lights on tonight! :S Almost real blood look and unique image style. Saw like horror.

Very modern horror film. Saw, etc., have been mentioned. The actual event scenes with Buffalo were intense! Very well directed and executed. I was definitely affected by those scenes. The only disconnect I felt was the whole interrogation scene. Now, the interrogators role was not defined in the film, but I took him for a homicide detective. I just don't think such a brutal interrogation of a VICITIM would take place. The actor also seemed kind of young to be in that kind of role. And the ending was a bit abrupt and didn't make sense, well, unless Buffalo Samson was there to bust her out and save his ass. :)

So for me...

The real horror stuff: A+!
The interrogation room: didn't work for me.
Good film, one of the better ones so far that I've scene.

Brett -
You should be very proud of what you've accomplished here. Your work with effects, editing and pacing in the straight horror sequences is top-notch. In terms of pure, modern, by-the-book horror, this is the best I've seen so far, flat out. The film has style to spare, and a lot of solid performing. Of course, fear is the second-easiest emotion to play...right after anger, I'm sorry to say.
There are some serious logical fallacies here. What is this girl, still bloody and obviously traumatized, doing in this interrogation room being harrassed by this guy? Why isn't she in a hospital? And what's Buffalo doing there at the end? I know he's kinda magical and all - but his name isn't Kaiser Sosay, you know.
Her performance was good. His...well...the kid didn't seem to have a lot to work off of. And I do mean kid - if he's a homicide detective, I'm a professional filmmaker. I'm not. Sadly. And he's not. Er. Back to the film.
Well, it's a lot to cram into five minutes...but if there's a longer version of the film, PM me and let me know, I'd like to see it. In the meantime, great job with the horror, as I said before.

dude.. I have to say it again.. "BUffalo is a friggin' BEAST!"

also, thinking more about your film tonight... (which is a strange thing to say at least).. . I would have to seen more of the big guy himself more towards the end. Right now, it quit edits in and out of frame so quickly. Its almost as though he has developed his character as "A BEAST" but at the same time, I would like really see his expression for more than a second. That would really drive the image of "I sure as frak don't want to meet this dude...."

again, kudos.

Buffalo, who the fuck is buffalo...looool

Ok really solid work here though I start to get tired with this thing where someone is being interrogated or asked questions and we see flashes of things that happened (I m talking about tv and cinema as well).

I'd rather see the movie play all the way through at Buffalo's place rather than this. Your shots over there were great and you did a wonderful job with props and make up and blood...

Sound levels were ok, again no score,.....

Acting was natural, unforced except the cop guy...

And here we come to the story....it would make a great film if you focused on buffalo as the lead....I dont buy it that this is an interrogation...a cop...a victim...I mean..first of all she's still beat up, with fresh blood on her...this would never have happened...and he is treating her badly coz she is all shook up and he goes on raving mad like she's the villain...at least you could have a good cop/bad cop here to provide something deeper....and he dont look like a detective .....

If you focused on Buffalo since you had all his shots very well prepared and great location and all...you would have given us an amazing little terror flick...right now I just feel like incomplete inside....

What irked me about it was there was so much that could have been trimmed down like someone said before, like the 2 people tied up together. It coulda been chopped to allow the ending to play out. Id say a good minute could have been used for an ending instead. but still good, best of what ive seen so far, and yes ive seen the same ones everyone goes nutz about for some reason. Good job magic child.

THANKS ONCE AGAIN.

Yes, I know story is a little rushed, However when your working with six minutes you kinda gotta leave alot up to the imagination. Instead of trying to create a start to stop story in six minutes I went ahead and used the Interrogation considering it allowed for a larger more involved story to be presented. LOL and yes everyone talks about how Buffalo manages to show up in the end... Use your creative imaginations and picture him storming the police station knocking down cops left and right to make his way to the detective..... and did you guys and gals ever question "maybeee the girl being questioned really is behind the whole thing"....:)

Your support is amazing! and means the world to me!

I can make a movie 6 minutes of a guy looking out his window and hes deaf and theres no audio, then it ends. Leave it up to your imagination, and it can be anything and i should win right? Im bothered by you saying that because this is really the best ive seen Brett. Im disapointed you took that route, there are plenty of stories that can fit in 6 minutes, i think this could have been as well.

I really enjoyed this film. It looks professional, and has a lot going on that keeps you wanting more. You don't know what it is, so you really have to pay attention- kinda like your questioning the girl as well. Did she do it? When that question was sparked it really made me think back to whether or not she could have done it. In the end, its confusing, yet it really makes you wonder and I think that just makes the film more interesting. Definitely the best I've seen.

Good Luck!

nice job guys.
the sound design on this was top notch. it added sooooo much to this piece.

i also really liked the visuals for all the flashbacks - great colors, great blood, and very scary. i thought the look of the interrogation room could have been better - those double shadows all over the walls were kind of killing me.

the editing was really cool, it really added some impact to the viewing experience.

the acting was also very good. good job finding actors that weren't afraid to scream :)

regarding the script - i thought the story was underdeveloped it sort of felt like a trailer for a feature. it started to develop at the end with the brother thing, and the interrogator thinking she was involved, but i wanted more.

my favorite part is the shot of the bloody feet swinging - a very powerful image. i also loved the cut to the feet from the opposite angle - a brilliant choice - great way of disturbing the viewer through unconventional editing.

Still great. I think you currently have the second highest overall score on my list (But I have 35+ more to watch!)

Very nice job.

But what I really want to know is - as the director, what did YOU make of Buffalo coming in at the end? Did he barge in through the police station? Is he magical? Was the girl actually the buffalo?

When I watched this, I really wanted the girl to be silent throughout, and at the end, her very first lines be "Buffalo." That would have been creepier than the back and forth between the girl and the detective, which was a little repetitive.

Your overall look, direction, cinematography, makeup were all great. Sound was okay - at times the score seemed a bit out of place though. The character of Buffalo (and the title of your film) are both by far my favorites in this fest. This is a far better torture flick than the many others I've seen in this fest, because the torture is a little more creative and leaves a tiny bit more to the imagination, and it is both carried along and broken up by the cuts back to the interrogation scene.

Very good work.

As I said before, you managed to create a persona that people rave about so you have to give us a Buffalo Movie!!! :) I bet you have enough footage from the killings to extend the length of this and make it more Buffalo oriented, less interrogation. But to be clear again, I had no problem with the concept of the interrogation, its been used a thousand times before so I was accustomed to that. I didnt like the way you delivered it...the cop's physic didnt fit, the girl should have been in a better state, probably cleaned up still cut and bruised though....just my feelings.

I have to start by saying: I REALLY don't like these kinds of movies. Every year I go to the NYC Horror Fest, and there is more and more of this stuff. Not really horror, not even really scary, but more what I call violence-porn. It just doesn't get me to watch people being hacked up/tortured/etc. That's fine, different strokes for different folks.

That being said, I was suprised how LITTLE of that icky stuff there was in this movie!!! Just the flash-backs, which were few and far between.

Maybe I'm old, but dude, I was cracking up and thinking: "That cop is like 15!" But his acting was soooo silly, it was impossible to take those scenes seriously. If it was your intent to have him be campy, that's cool, but the tone of the movie did not indicate that for me.

But even though I don't want to see the icky stuff, I think if you do a longer version, I would really shape and trim that interrogation. I think your longer version will greatly benefit by using that as a jumping off point to get us into the story of how these kids got messed up by Buff. But not so much of the story itself.

As for Buff coming in at the end, yeah, that's fine, though I wish I hadn't read about it before seeing the movie. I try not to read threads before seeing the movies, but I read something somewhere...

Yeah, I call him Buff. We're tight like that. :)

Hey Magicchildfilms, I thought that you did a great job with your movie. I was just horrified at times. That was some pretty sick killings! And that guy, Buffalo... I NEVER want to meet him! SCARY!!!!

I enjoyed your film. It has some big-time qualities to it. The flashback scenes are terrifying. I really found myself entertained.

My one complaint about your film is that the "detective" started out at such a high level of persistence that he really had no where to build. I understand that he NEEDS to get this information out of the woman, but I maybe would have tried a more gentle, coaxing approach. That way, by the end of the film, the guy can be slamming the table and yelling at her. I feel that this could escalate the tension. Just my opinion.

Great job! Congrats!

Hey magicchild,

Just watched your flick. I thought pretty much everything was great except the abrupt ending. Not sure if you had to cut it down from a longer version or something, but it was just kind of abrupt. I think you were going for a "high tension' kind of thing where the girl had a split-personality? It's the only thing I could think of given the ending...other than Buffalo Samson storming the police station a la Terminator :)

Also, the detective interrogating her seemed a little harsh, as she seemed like more of a victim than a suspect in the beginning.

But again, the visuals, the editing for the flashbacks all that was top notch.

Acting: One of the best although thought the detective was a tad too young. Girl reminded me of Clare Higgins from Hellraiser, she’s got skills, use her more.
Script: Predictable in places. Not much of a story.
Direction: Fantastic.
Music: Simple sound design.
Editing: Tight my man.
Lighting: The most film-like of that I’ve seen. Stunning.
Loved: The look of the film, the steel rope (nice touch), the shot’s in general. The twist. Buff is a great character you can now expand upon.
Hated: The fact she was still bloodied up, don’t the Police take clothes for forensics before an interview? The fact you went for out-an-out Saw type of Horror, that you used “Chainsaw” meat-hook, best bit of advice I’ve heard, Try not to put anything in your film you’ve seen before.
Overall: I think if you would have had more of a story you would have won hands down, you got skills and I want to see you stretching them. That said this is a great piece of work. Well done.
Look forward to more of your work.

Man that seriously means the world to me! Looking back now I realize there are things I could have done differently, but thats what makes this fest so great! It has made me question so many things and look at my own film in a whole new way!

Interesting Buffalo Samson Fact:

The Final movie run time came out to be 8:13, I got on a hot streak one night with the editing process and before I knew it, I was looking at having to cut out over 2 minutes. So that might be some of the reason the story is a little under developed.

Anyways thanks so much man

For me this was pretty much Teen Slasher meets Saw/Hostel. In that respect you seemed to have pulled this off. I didn't really see anything new as the material was derivative. You did the torture and killing well, but there was no reason for me to care about any of the victims, since they were never anything more than bloody bodies. The story just wasn't developed.

I didn't buy the detective. He seemed too young for the part. And how did Buffalo Samson make it through a police station and into the interview room to kill the detective?

Best thing about the movie is the villain, though. I absolutely love the name Buffalo Samson...

CINEMATOGRAPHY:

Great work. The feel, the look, the shots, all were very well done. The interrogation room had a nice cold feel to it, the campfire scene looked good, and the basement scenes, wow, dirty, gritty and just overall really creepy.

EDITING:

Again, great job here. Going between the interrogation room and the basement was all done extremely well. The timing and the pace of all of the cuts really flowed well. It felt very SAW like to me.

SOUND:

Very well done, good crisp audio. All of the noises were heard and understood. I didn't have any problem hearing the actors, or the background noises. Very high quality.

SCORE:

I have yet to be disappointed by the soundtrack in any of the films. Yours is another great example of fitting perfectly with the story. I think if I had closed my eyes and just listened to the audio, I'd be just as scared as I was watching it.

SCREENPLAY:

Not the most original idea, but you pulled it off very well, and with a style that was your own. I was definitely reminded of the short film that started SAW off watching this, but you gave it your own twist and put it in another place.

ACTING:

Overall, your actors did a great job. I have to give props to anyone that is willing to be tied up, dirtied up with blood or whatever and put in scary situations and pull off a good performance. I was a little disappointed with the interrogator however. For the most part he did a great job, but at other times it felt a little weak and unnatural.

Overall this was a great film. I was creeped out and even disturbed by some of the things. Just as SAW started off as a short film and became 3 feature length movies, I could see the same thing happening here. I could definitely see you adapting this into a longer length with more information behind the killer and the victims. Also, I loved the ending, I was definitely not expecting that. Great work here.

THANKS FOR THE GREAT REVIEW BY MACINTOSH!!!

Looked great man! Loved it. Didn't like the ending and thought the interrogator would have been played better if he was more methodical from the beginning and lost his cool gradually as opposed to starting heated.

Great stuff man, you've got some talent.

This was pretty entertaining. Great makeup job. The girl being interogated looked so battered that I was fixated. The interrogator was a bit over the top but it was fun to watch him anyway and not too distracting.

Buffalo Samson himself was pretty scary. How'd you find the actor who played him? Friend?

Cool name too.

The sound in the interrogation room wasn't so clean. Sounded like an air conditioner. Wasn't too distracting, but it was noticeable.

The cinematography was good. I liked the colors, the makeup, the edits. Very modern style.

The torture scenes were well done. Felt like Saw as I'm sure you've heard.

As far as the story goes, I think it could have been a bit more clever. Maybe more Usual Suspects-like. The violence was unmotivated which is cool when dealing with a psychopathic murderer, but we've seen that so much already. It'd be cool if things tied together.

Also, why would the interrogator insist that he knows she "knows the fucking name"? Does everyone who is attacked automatically know the name of the attacker? Seemed a bit contrived just to get to the last bit of dialogue making the last words "Buffalo".

The ending was confusing. I wish the girl actually summoned Buffalo Samson (which I initially thought) or somehow transformed into him.

Entertaining movie. Flesh out the scipt, extend it, add compelling character moments, and you have a winner.

Just finally getting the time to copy the notes I compiled in a Word doc while watching the shorts:

The sound was the best so far on this – GREAT work. Camera angles & editing flow was also quite good. Story/script was solid as well … only thing that just kept me from getting into it was the fact that the guy interviewing was an ass from the get go, and it just didn’t make sense that a woman who was so upset & beat up would be interrogated in such a fashion. At the end, unless this was on purpose because she really was in on it (still lost on that), she seemed to almost take an aggressive/offensive stance with the guy by getting back in his face with “I don’t know”, when she was so upset/crying just moments before. Otherwise an EXTREMELY high scorer – among the top.
