Jarred,

I was concerned about the mpeg-2 that I uploaded since I didn't know what the heck I was doing. Can you confirm with me that it is OK for DVD... when you get a chance. PM me if you want.

Thanks,

EDIT: If we see our movie name in that list, is it safe to assume that our Mpeg2 and H.246 is a-ok?

My zip is on its way, we didnt extend the DVD version because no one got back to me on a time restriction for that, so its the same as the web version, no time now to score the longer cut. But its gunna be 3 hours for the upload, hopefully it will be there in the morning jarred.

Cable modem.

Robert Eldon

Cable modem.

Hmmm. OK, I was thinking that depending on the connection, there could be interruptions on the line. Like if the cable modem does polling, or a phone line has 'caller ID', or if you have an alarm system installed on the line, etc.

Just a thought. Don't give up. We want to see what you've got.

Edit: What about your PC? Do you have some kind of internet security or something that should be turned off?

I have ZoneAlarm Security Suite, but it's never interrupted an FTP transfer before.

Do you know how to look at the processes running on your computer (i.e. Task Manager). Sorry, I'm assuming you're using a PC?

Worst case. Jarred had offered (somewhere) that you could mail (think FedEx) your files if you had problems. He just suggested emailing him to get the address to mail to.

You'll get it in the contest somehow. I certainly feel for you. I was so afraid that I would get disconnected after 6 hours of uploading.

Yep, and nothing seems out of the ordinary. System resources are good. I appreciate the help, man. So far, FileZilla seems to be moving along okay, but it's still telling me that I've got about 3 hours left (I've been uploading for an hour already). Hi Jarred,

Could you let me know if our file "Halfway" looks ok? There is quite a bit of strobing and our quicktime playing back was showing some distracting flickering (not in the good way).

does it look ok to you? Somewhere in the transfer the ending has gone a little dark. I could try and lighten it up and re-post a quicktime if you are going to leave the server open?

Ooops! I sent a .wav instead of an .ac3 with my .m2v DVD files (I can't make an .ac3). I gotta buy some plug-in for Adobe Premiere or something I guess to make .ac3 files. I had to sleep this morning, and now I'm at work until later tonight. I'll try to figure it out tonight when I get back home.

FlintMI

Rez,

Adobe Encore DVD will make an AC3 file. After you make your project, there will be an AC3 file in the \sources\transcodes folder.

Or, if you just want to convert your exisiting WAV file try this. works like a charm

**** MY ADVICE... USE GOOD SPEAKERS OR HEADPHONES WHEN VIEWING FILMS!!!
My film is an entirely different movie with good sound. Cheap laptop speakers just don't cut it. Not even close.
I'm sure this goes for ALL the FILMS.

SOUND MATTERS! enjoy! ****

Totally agree with that statement.. I was about to cry when I had to put my audio at 24k but it still sounds pretty good. The mpg is way better but the .mov is not bad

We gave our Mpeg2 version with .wav file, is this no good or am I missing something?

The problem with supplying PCM for your audio content is that with the CBR of 8 Mb/s PCM is going to challenge (if not down right exceed) the capabilities (in terms of sustained data rates) many low end DVD players. I would recommend that you process your PCM file into a Dolby Digital (.ac3) and submit it as a replacement to be certain that there aren't any playability issues on the DVD.

Well, now I'm getting nervous...It's not on the server, so I'm sure Jarred's taken it down. The file size was correct, so everything should be there. But no sign of it on the first post. On the other hand, Jarred's last update was 5 something am and he's got to check them out so I guess I'll just relax and wait awhile longer.

I linked him via PM to one I uploaded on my own server....I hope he replaced it. Quicktime Pro had applied this automatic filter thing that did some weird stuff to the colors. It's not awful, but it's not how it's supposed to look and the colors fluctuate a bit. THe new file is actually .2mb smaller and looks way better.....I hope he replaces it.

Nope, "Thou Shalt Not" is still not on the list.

I think he's trying to tell you something. Dude, take a hint. :)

I have taken so many "hints" concerning this process and have made just about ever effort that I can think of including placing the file in three different locations to be downloaded.

So, if you would, please enlighten me as to the underlying message that the "hint" provides, I am obviously missing something here...

It was a joke, as in: "We don't want you in the contest..." Thus the smiley. :):)

No offense taken, I am really just trying to understand if I am missing a detail or communication that would resolve this.

Mailed you Jarred at contact@dvxuser.com. Mary Mercer is still not on the list.

I don't think you've missed anything. As fate would have it your project is probably the last one Jarred will confirm, so I wouldn't stress about it.

... so I wouldn't stress about it.

Stress? My wife will kill me if I don't make this fest because of upload issues given the amount of time I spent neglecting her er... working on this :)

Rich S - your poster rocks by the way - nice design

I wonder if it would make it easier on Jarred if people had to mail a CD/DVD of the files (as in snail mail). There could just be a "postmarked by" deadline. The uploading chaos takes 3 - 4 days anyway. Just a thought.

Either way, I am a happy camper that fests exists.

Understood. I was in the same boat there for a second. But I don't think Jarred would exclude anyone because of an uploading issue.

That's how ZombieFest worked. I think there ended up being problems with that method, too (people having to mail stuff a couple of times because they sent the wrong file types, etc.).

great idea, but I might have an even better one -- torrent

Jared could simply download all the files himself and use each of our Webservers and shared resources to do so. That's what torrents are for! Big files and movie sharing (legal that is).

What is a torrent you ask? From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent#Creating_and_publishing_torrents)

Ahhh. Didn't know that. I guess there is trouble no matter how it is done.

Getting your movie in the correct format for whatever contest you enter it into is also part of the contest no? Its all part of the movie making process. Torrent'ing it would leave it really open to delays, people cant understand compression and FTP'ing , Torrenting would be really a nightmare.

FlintMI

there is no FTP with torrent.

torrent is its own file transfer protocol. and torrent does everything for you. encoding, upload, download, everything. you can use any torrent app you want, too there a million of them and they all work on the same standard.

Cynic821

i know it does. i know how it works...but people having problems with ports and all that jazz, i could imagine them getting a torrent to work properly

Yeah, but it's so slow to download things, it's a joke.

I think this FTP is fine, but:

1) First and foremost, the contest would need a real FTP server with resources enough to handle the uploads. I suspect, by the fact that it was using Serv-U, that it was just some Windows box somewhere.

2) Give each user an account, Write a little script or program to listen on the FTP directories, know which user is sending it - based on the login - unzip/validate/put in a database, etc. That way you would not need a person to do it all by hand, and Jarred could get some peace of mind, and you could have a list that updated automatically as files were uploaded, and send PMs to users to confirm.

2) At the start of the contest, we should put together exact specs for the files. At first it was H.264, but the wrapper wasn't specified, but .mov was preferred, etc.

3) We should put up a sticky with exact instructions for encoding from each NLE. B-man started that thread in this contest, and I think we could cull things from all of the other threads on the subject to create a simple step-by-step guide to everything from encoding to zipping to FTP.

yah I know you're just looking out for the non-tech folks. but torrents work fine without port forwarding or any crazy config steps. most torrent clients add their port to the exception list in Windows firewall. :Drogar-Evil(DBG):

you'll get faster speeds if you do know how to port forward, but its still pretty darn feast. :)

the steps to do all this are:

1. downloading torrent app
2. encoding your movie as a torrent (which is a tiny text file!)
3. email the tiny text file to jared
4. jared downloads all movies

pretty simple, right? we could even put a simple tutorial vid on there that walks the complete noob through it. again, because its based on a single standard everyone will be doing the same thing.

anyway, that's my 2 cents. they'll take it or leave it for the next festival. :dankk2:

I think we are lookin at a way jarred wont have to do any work with downloading the files to himself, as well as making a deadline stick. I kinda disagree with the tutorials and what not for encoding, its part of the process to learn on your own how to encode and upload, but anyone offering help ofcourse can be thanked greatly :)

ROFL! that's hilarious. I know yer just kidding right? I get 380KBs d/l a second with utorrent (3Mbit Verizon DSL) and some sources cite that bittorrent accounts for 35% of all internet traffic.

You're right though, easily accessible step-by-step tutorials to obtain files which match the fest specs are needed for the most common NLEs. :)

Dude, I've downloaded many things through Bittorrent, as have many of my friends. A movie or TV show can take like DAYS. And NOTHING on the internet should take days. Or even hours for that matter.

I think securing a means to get your movie to any given festival , is also a part of the process. Besides Jarred already said you could mail the file. Bandwidth included.

ive waited WEEKS before to download a 100mb file from bit torrent. RARE out of print albums and what not i want to check out before spending 50 bucks on ebay. When something is out of print, ill download before purchasing it because buying it 2nd hand doesnt got to support the creator of the content....fair in my mind.
