Are your H264 files .MOV or MP4s?

Brandon Rice

Mine are MOV files...

Aram,

I was creating both. Ended up with a .mov. Jarred says .MOV so that all of the entries are the same. Are you using Windows or Mac?

Blaine

.mov

I'm using sorenson squeeze on PC and their version of H264 is mp4s.

I'm using sorenson squeeze on PC and their version of H264 is mp4s.

I'm not familiar with that one. I used QuickTime 7 pro for my .mov. I've learned a lot in the last 48 hours about compression.

I'm sure somebody else can help you with this. FYI, there was a thread posted by Brandon and 'sticky'ed.

Thanks, I know how to do both I was just wondering if I was the only one making MP4s. If I have to I guess I will just export a .mov

yeah, I think you'll have to go with QTPro Aram. Sorenson doesn't do H.264 with .mov

I wonder if it would matter that I use MP4, when I open my movie in QT it looks like crap for some reason.

Have you check out the thread entitled "Tutorials For Creating 16:9 Mpeg2 File"? That could help.

Yeah I just looked there. I don't need to know how to make them though, just needed to know if it would make a difference since Sorensons version of h264 is AVC pro but in an MP4 wrapper. I was just wondering how many people were going to do the same. If I am the only one than I would make a .mov instead. If there are others making MP4s I will just stick with that. Its still an H264 just in another wrapper and will play in QT just as well.
I use Sonic Scenarist for my Mpegs since it gives much more control than any other program I've used so far.

Yeah, I was going to go with the MP4 for the same reasons - same diff, but decided to just tow the party line...

We are having difficulties trying to get a H264 file (Vegas 6) and time is running out so we may use the MP 4 instead .

Quicktime (pro) keeps locking up on my PC so I don't know what the !@#$ I'm going to do... any ideas??

Happened to me too. Open QTPro it will go to the website. Open your file from the file menu item. When the new window opens with your file. Close the first window by clicking the windows "X" (upper right). Then you should be good to go. Well, at least that worked for me.

Everytime I left the first window open, it would lock up.

Hey guys,

I had a similiar problem and was told to disconnect from the internet when trying to use the movie settings. It worked and saved my @&&.

Hope that helps?

Thanks guys, I'll try both suggestions...

Good night and good luck.

AHA! Yep, I suspect that would do the trick too. When I close the first window it is the one that is connected to the QT website.

I'm doing a Sorenson MP4. Our 5:57 Film compressed to 22 Megs and looks great. Less for folks to download, and it should work with quicktime the same exact way. Good .mov compression on a PC I have never gotten.

But is that h.264?

Tom Marshall
10-01-2006, 11:04 PM
Why can't there just be a 50 meg file size limit????

Cynic821
10-01-2006, 11:05 PM
????

Tom Marshall

I can't get h.264 to work no matter what... it's never below 60 megs no matter what we do...

Cynic821

try lowering the audio down to like 32 or 22khz

mine is 400kbits per sec video
22khz audio
exactly 6min.

37mb

Tom Marshall
10-01-2006, 11:18 PM
we set the keyframes to 120 and the lowest bitrate and the stupid thing is 68 megs!

Rock Punk!
10-01-2006, 11:19 PM
Yeah, the audio was key for me too.

Tom Marshall
10-01-2006, 11:22 PM
i'll try that

no problemo, i set keyframe to every 24frames

Tom Marshall
10-02-2006, 12:14 AM
Yeah, we set it to 24 and I think he (webdog) set it at 800 for the bitrate, but I'm not sure. He says it looks good, so I'm hoping he's not BSing me... lol

Cynic821
10-02-2006, 12:17 AM
mine was at 200kbps bit rate at one point and still looked great.

Tom Marshall
10-02-2006, 12:18 AM
once ours was under 500, it looked really bad for some reason. i've never done h.264 encoding before, so it was all trial and error.

Cynic821
10-02-2006, 12:20 AM
Once you get it youll be alright, just a bad time for trial and error. I remember spearheading the H.264 codec when apple first introduced it for APW way back when, and NO ONE would agree with me, they still used WMV with is terrible quality and huge file sizes, well now its like 4 years later and guess what everyone is using??

And guess what computers have now been taking over at APW and its spawned out business's?

yup

Tom Marshall
10-02-2006, 12:26 AM
Yeah, I agree, bad time, but it's cool... we got it...

I can't believe anyone would actually want to use WMV... what a terrible format...

Cynic821
10-02-2006, 12:27 AM
The worst ever, they would try and convince me to drop my macs and give them WMV files for whatever project i was working on at the time for them. Its just funny how they all got macbook pros now, and i was the first to pick up a Macbook Pro out of them all as well, buncha babies...

LOL.

WMV is to H.264 as HDV is to DVCPro HD

Tom Marshall
10-02-2006, 01:27 PM
Yeah, and now everyone groans over WMV... lol

I was thinking of maybe going with a Mac... not sure yet. I still wish the Amiga was still around...

My DVD version looks overly red on the TV but looks fine on the PC. I guess I'm going to have to re-encode and re-upload my DVD version.

Cynic821
10-02-2006, 02:30 PM
what kind of TV?

Tom Marshall
10-02-2006, 07:51 PM
Ours looks great on a Sony Trinitron, but kinda dark on an lcd computer screen... is that normal?

Beat Takeshi
10-02-2006, 07:54 PM
Just a regular TV. It looks the same here as it does a neighbors TV so I'm re-incoding the DVD version and hope to get it in before the FTP closes.

WMV is to H.264 as HDV is to DVCPro HD

ROFL. that was hilariously funny, but so not true...

HDV + WMV can look pretty darn good...
