Trying to do a playback of footage recorded to Firestore; Firestore is firewired into the
HVX200, where it's component out to a Magnavox HD TV/monitor in HD mode.
Stuff is playing back to the HVX'x LCD screen, but nothing on the monitor?
I've searched posts high and low, but no answers as to what's going wrong -
(and I'm waiting on Barry's book to get here)
Help someone?

What you want to do won't work. The HVX doesn't pass through an HD signal from its firewire input to the component outputs.

....so my only options for HD viewing of the footage I recorded on the Firestore
are....?
(btw - my old film prof caught your HVX seminar in ATL - said you were great)
Load it into your NLE, or use P2 Log (which drove me crazy, thank's Apple for the 5.1.2 upgrade).

Are there NO direct Firestore - to - HD Monitor options???
P2 Log? FCP 5.1.2? I don't know of any directly from the FS-100, since Panasonic criplled the functioning of the Firewire port for some unknown reason. I have contacted Focus to find out if they know of any solutions.

None.
How about HVX to Monitor instead ?
-
Like mentioned; you'll need a P2 viewer or will have to convert the files first

Will this work? (this is a description for an Apple Cinema Display) Would pushing
'PLAY" on the Firestore run the footage on this monitor via firewire?
Peripheral Devices on Your Desktop
Every Apple display has a FireWire 400 hub and a USB 2.0 hub, each with two ports. Use the FireWire ports for connecting high-performance devices like digital cameras, and camcorders. And whether you’re using your display with a Mac or a PC, you can make best use of all the latest USB 2.0 devices, including iPods and industry-standard printers and scanners.
No, it's just a plain old Firewire port that plugs into the firewire port on your Mac. That firewire port on the Cinema Display is only a port, not tied into the screen itself. It's just like an extention cord from your FW port on the back of your computer.
When you plug in a Cinema Display into your Mac, you have the video plug, a Firewire plug, and a USB plug. The FW and USB simply act as extention cords to the FW and USB plugs on the back of the Cinema Display. They are not tied into playback on the screen, except through the computer and it's software.

Here's one solution that might work -- play the footage back through firewire to an AJ-HD1200A deck, and have that deck connected to the monitor.
That's the only device I know of that has firewire in and HD out.

Yeah, one nice $16000 monitoring solution...

A long way around is to record the clip you want to see from the Firestore to a P2 in the camera by playing and recoding- then playing from the P2. I have successfully done this. Otherwise you will have to view throgh the Y/C or composite through cam from Firestore.
From my info and tests, the HVX doesn't pass any Firewire streams to any other outputs on the camera. So the Y/C and Composite are out, according to my info.

I use Y/C out all the time to monitor the firestore playback, it DEFINATELY works. Of course its not HD, but great for reference.

What about FS-100 to DV Rack HD? Would that work over firewire?

No go, at least I have not been able to do that. I have mentioned this feature before, to play directly from the firestore to HDRack, but either people didnt understand why one would want to do this, or how it could be acheived.
I would LOVE this ability.
If there is a way please let us know.
That would be a great update.

I will be getting my FS-100 and HVX from spec-comm on tuesday. I'll try it then with the trial software. If so that's an AWESOME deal. Check HVX quality on macbook pro w/ DV Rack HD via bootcamp XP, then switch to FS-100 for recording, Check FS-100 w/ DV Rack HD after capture to see how it looks.

Yes you can play FS-100 to DVRack HD.
This is a similar thread, and you'll find the answer at the bottom.

Since Ive update my firestore and DVRack, I havent tried it again, so thanks for reminding me. Maybe now it will work. That will be great. Thanks pinkbeth
You can play footage from the FS-100 to any NLE live. You'll use the FS-100's DV Firewire port, NOT the "Computer" Firewire port. Then hit play on the FS, it'll feed a regular digital video stream just like capturing live from your HVX.

Beautifull!
This is a great way to view previously recorded files in the field in full resolution.
I mostly use DVRack HD as a monitor anyway. Next question is can you stream to both Firestore and DVRack simultaneously?
What do you mean, stream them simultaneously? In what way, for what purpose? I'm not following...

To firstore for recording and still be able to periodically plug in dvrack for monitoring. I want to keep all the data consolidated on the firestore but be able to split the signal for occasional monitoring with scopes on laptop. Since there is no loop, maybe a firewire repeater? In fact perhaps this could be used as backup rec on laptop at the same time
