I had a problem yesterday when we capturing directly to a firewire drive through my powerbook. The picture is great, but the audio was about a "half a bubble" off. Easily fixable in post. Most of the audio was terrific, matched up perfectly to the video. I was capturing from firewire on the hvx to the powerbook to a firewire 800 drive externally. This may have already been addressed but I couldn't find it on a search.
thanks,
steve

Was your mic setup the same?

Yes, everything was the same. We were booming everything.

Audio out of sync has happened to me everytime i've recorded straight to a powerbook (attached Graid to be exact and through a Lacie firewire adapter) using FCP.

I'm usually somewhere around 8-15 frames out of sync and have never figured out a way around it. And this has happened on multiple powerbooks. I haven't seen an explanation for this and I'm kind of surprised that I don't see others posting about this. If anyone knows the cause, please speak up.

For the record, I've never seen this problem in years of recording to powerbooks.... so it's not general...

What occurs to me is that what is coming out of the 1394 port is the 60 frames of video and audio and if you are shooting 24P or PA, there is a built in delay, or rather there should be because of the capture on the camera or video half. But many folks don't like to hear that delay and so in the other function window the tell the camera to give them the audio on an EE which by-passes the delay and so what is sent downstream is the audio without the delay and thus once it is in the computer you have your out of sync issue. Try listening to the audio with the delay in and see if this resolves your issue. I beleive it is closer to only 2 frames out.

Hope this helps,

Jan

Jan,
Thanks, I know about the delay and don't mind it and in fact tell the director that he will hear the delay. I wondered if because of the same buss being used firewire 400 to firewire 800 if there might have been a problem. Also my dp gets a bit absent minded when he sets a new shot and pulls on the cable. However, usually that results in loss of picture totally.
Bear in mind however, that not all of the video and audio were out of synch. Just portions. I can live with it, it is a pain, but not unfixable. I am going to try a usb 2 cable today and see if the same thing happens.
I'm hoping that it is something simple because tomorrow night is a heavy night, dialogue, 2 ratchets, one throat being slashed, another crushed and a big partial burn. It should be interesting to say the least.

Btw, I don't even see where you might adjust that under other functions.
