View Full Version : UNTITLED the movie

just thought i may as well attempt to put an entry to this comp.
i've thought of a few ideas.
the best being a little piece based around the premiss; what if there where more of me.
i will have no help.
just me and a dead camera. no batteries and the tape-deck doesn't work.
to get around this i will have to live capture all the footage with a 1m firewire cable attached to my lap top - all plugged into an extension cable because i had one of the "probably going to blow up" batteries. still waiting on the replacement.
so it's just me in my house. i don't have a tripod or anything.
i also have a really bad 35mm adapter. it's made out trash that i found today.

shit nikon lens, cardboard and electrical tape, plastic chinese takeout tray and the front of some binoculars.

it's completely unstable and doesn't work properly and i made it in 5 min a couple of hours ago as a proof of concept.

it's 9:30pm
i will update as the night progresses and document the process.
i think i read somewhere that an artists worst enemy is not having limitations.

give me luck

right, well.
i've finished shooting the rough draft. i am going to start editing it soon..
it has no plot what so ever. it's all out of focus. it's too dark.
i will post some of the pics of making it up later when i figure out how to do it.
does any one know the code or how to post pics?

i had this idea that i'd upload this rough draft to youtube, people would watch it and then give comments on what to add. shaping the story, i would then go and shoot that. edit, upload and it continues... a group movie in realtime.

just a thought. not enough time for me to do it now but maybe some people could do that in the future. a whole feature like that would be cool. just start off with a piliminary idea and watch it shape.

little update

i've finished the editing. i am just about to do the musical score.
it goes for 2:24

i scrapped the original idea and went with something easier

it now has a title. yay!!! "living with demons"
it's still a working one though.

it's not as bad as i thought but it's still pretty bad..

it was made in less than 24 hours and i got a full nights sleep mid way through that.
i am now encoding the footage.

Way to put it in kickass gear and get yourself a film made :)

Looking forward to seeing it. Hopefully I don't confuse it with the other "untitled" pieces out there :)

OH MY GOD!

I actually thought you were kidding in your first post! I thought it was an elaborately crafted "joke" post (and a VERY funny one at that)! Kudos to you, man, for making that Chinese take-out tray 35mm adapter--I love your ingenuity and willingness to work with what you have, and NOT just whine and make excuses (like me) why you can't make your film because you don't have the "right" camera or the "right" location or whatever. Also, I think alternative imaging techniques can be very interesting, and extremely artistic in capable hands. I truly applaud your effort on this project and look forward to seeing what you come up with! Good work, jenningsp!

P.S. Love your title!

yeah, this is now on my must see list due to the ingenuity and the curiosity to see what someone pulls off under these circumstances.

i've encoded the mpg2 + aiff + dolby 2.0.ac3 aaaaaand the H.264.

all ziped and waiting. 131.4 mb

THIS is the MOST confusing film to me... is all the stuff you said in the first post really true?

jenningsp
09-28-2006, 09:47 AM
yes. it is all true, sadly. i'm saving up for a dvx + mic + 35mm adapt. i'll have enough by mid 2007 then i start making my feature. check the photos for my awesome setup.

Matt Sconce's Review of Untitled
SPOLIERS POSSIBLE!

Script
Wasn't really there. I was confused as to the point? Drink Milk?
Cinematography
For the cards you were dealt with the equipment and such, good job. For goodness sake make sure the final shot of a movie is not out of focus. It leaves a viewer remembering it.
Overall Impressions
I did not really understand this short. I think it is cool you got up and made something, but it really helps to shoot something with a plot and some motivation and actors. I understand that this can be more difficult, but I am sure you will love it! Good luck getting that gear you want. It will open up some creative doors for you. :-)

this was a film I had a hard time watching. I found myself scrolling through only to find the words. "Drink More Milk".

All I can say... Great work on finishing your film and entering the fest.

I don't know. I thought it was pretty damn funny. I watched it at work and laughed. I was not left wondering what it meant. I'm glad it was in the fest.

One comment only - the part when he opens the door and starts hitting 'something' reminded me of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (damn bats, get the off me) LOOL ...PEE'd my pants man!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, the whole opening the door revealing a bright light and organ music and the whole fly-swatter thing was GREAT. I was laughing so f*cking hard! The way it was shot made it disturbing and funny at the same time. THAT WAS THE FILM!

The rest of the film kind of was a non-event, though. Out of focus, foggy. I know your limitations, but still.

Drink more milk. Well, hmm. All right. Will do!

You don't work for the dairy counsel, do you?

thanks for all the feedback.

for those of you looking for meaning....

the film follows its own internal logic and story-line.
man wakes up. man finds dirty toilet. man fights demons from hell coming out of his pantry. man drinks milk.

thats pretty much the script and concept. but the point of the film is; it has everything...

it has the constant tinnitus ambient noise subtle audio track.
it has the waking up and getting out of bed start.
it has the slow walking down a hall way obscure lighting and framing suspense shot.
it has the obligatory shot of a basin, in a bathroom, with flickering lights.
it then has the kind of gross shot to make the audience feel ill, also in the bathroom for added points.
a feet close-up, just because we can.
then the off skew angled shot of a man in shadow
then the bad 80's synth/organ soundtrack to demon fighting climax
then a bad obscure pointless ending.
and all incredibly dark and moody cine

really this film is perfect in every way for horrorfest.
it is 'the zeitgeist of horrorfest 2006'
that is the point, or at least one of them. the other is to entertain. :)

Review | POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT! I watch the movies first time around strictly for enjoyment, second and third for review.

Lots of demons in that toilet. Forgive my short review, this one looked like it was just for fun. Looks like you guys had a lot of it, too. I'd like to know... were those demons coming from the toilet his own?

Lingothree
10-13-2006, 04:13 PM
Funny. That's what the toilet looks like when I drink milk.

JoshuaNitschke
10-14-2006, 11:54 AM
One of the funnier entries here. The toilette shot was pretty gross man, my eyes didn't need that.

I think the funniest moment was the beating back of the forces of hell.

WITH A FLY SWATTER.

Thanks for giving me such a detailed review, I'd love to see your more serious work.

Just finally getting the time to copy the notes I compiled in a Word doc while watching the shorts:

Great, you can show us what you can do with just yourself as the all-in-one, but try to make a film next time that involves more people & you’ll likely see your production value increase 10 fold. There was certainly nothing horrific about this, unless someone is severely lactose intolerant, so I’m not sure if this really even qualifies for the fest. That said, considering this was shot by yourself, I’m impressed you were still able to get that shaky camera look while you were in front of the lens.
