A while back Apple released the pixelet codec, that I've so far seen noone using (Except from internaly at Pixar if I'm not wrong, which sorta certifies the quality). From the name I guess this is a wavelet codec.
Are these in relation?

Pixlet - that's funny. I remember that now.... http://www.lafcpug.org/reviews/review_sheer_video.html It's not very good though.....

Hi Graeme or anyone else,
Is there a good source book of codecs, understanding compression, how to maintain top image quality through the production chain etc.

I don't think there is. Codec law is guru stuff, usually handed down in cryptic forum posts or articles.
Marco Solario has a great codec resource page: http://codecs.onerivermedia.com/
But really, as every workflow is different, you've got to do the experiment yourself, with your own gear and choices to maximize quality.

Graeme, looks like you have a book to write :)
Anyway, care to explain why you thought the pixelet codec wasnt good?

8bit only, slow, and inferior quality to PhotoJPEG at the same bit rate. ie, PhotoJPEG was better in every way I could think of.
