I know it's probably premature, but studio lighting and lab controlled almost monochromatic subjects do not give a very good idea of how the Mysterium handles real color/lights...
A very useful, cheap comparision would be to take the Mysterium out into the daylight (taking appropriate counter surveillance measures) and shoot in some typical indoor/outdoor wilderness/city type locations in parallel with a Cannon EOS-1 D Mark II N Digital SLR (8.2 Megapixel CMOS Sensor) for comparision...not that the EOS is a perfect comp., but it is certainly high enough quality and is a well known ref for most pro-photogs these days...

Internally, we've done comparisons with RED v Canon DSLR and we're happy with what we see from both cameras :-)
Obviously, one of the things we've photographed with RED are test charts with lots of colours, and them too look great.

Ahh... someday we'll have footage and comparisons to satisfy us all...

Patience gentlemen, as far as we know the 'Franken Kamera" hasn't even left the table it was first assembled on. I'm sure we will see more exotic footage very soon.

8-----D - - - yeah what better way to photograph FRANKENSTEIN than when he is still on the operating table!! seeing things in their real context, not put in another on purpose by a MERE MORTAL
every little thing should be photographed and written down. or even filmed. the development of red is SO exciting and such a wonderful moment in time (cinema/media history>/world history its just a shame sometime that there isnt some kind of film being made with it. get a dvd when you get the camera!!. i dont mean no press kit with lame set up interviews. im talking the real deal. i mean EXPERIENCING THE JOURNEY. DONT LOOK BACK, for example. or perhaps in the likes of JOHAN VAN DER KEUKEN. i want to take the journey. i want to see what it looks like when the camera that changed the world was BORN. nothing can be more interesting or complex than the red one fetus splayed out on the operating table, with the few human beings in the world that could even manifest such a thing standing near it !
frames from the camera and body designs are sweet. but the SPACES IN BETWEEN are WHERE IT'S AT.
i want to take the journey

I think the wonderful thing about the unknown elements of RED and the wait that most of us are going through is that RED is potentially such a leap forward in digital cinematography that we really shouldn't mind being patient.
If this kind of technology can take us 3-5 years (just a guestimation) into the future... if we have to wait a few month here and there what does it really matter? Because if RED can do what it suggests in the next year or two we're still years ahead of where we thought we'd be.
Slow down and enjoy the ride.
Best,
J.

Let me toss a noob question in here since we are talking about Canon CMOS chips. My DSLR can go from 100 to 1600 ISO. What is the ISO range on the RED?

Probably very similar!

Graeme says probably something similar!
This is so damn well exciting it is becoming surreal. I cant sleep. This can't be happening............I should never have taken the red pill...........
The whole red team has taken the red pill..... they cannot sleep. They are programmed to work to improve beyong the improvable, to go where no ordinary mortal has gone. The red journey will never end, where are they taking us to, we can't resist we must follow the red team....but where to?

I have an original Canon 1D and a more current Canon 30D (4 and 8 megapixels, respectively). Is the Mysterium 4K sensor roughly equal to the 1D sensor in terms of dynamic range, noise and overall image quality?

ALthough the Mysterium is a 12mp design, it is very modern, low noise and high quality. We're aiming for the images to be better than you can get on the above mentioned DSLR's, but would be happy with comparable.

Cool! That will be awesome to be able to crank up the ISO to 800 or more!

From initial tests, yes, ISO 800 should be fine at least.
