As promised, today is 26th and Photokina is up. Zeiss announced and here are the new lenses for Nikon F Mount:

Added to the already known 1.4 50mm & 85mm ZF, now we also have:
Wide Angle Lenses
Distagon T* 2,8/25 ZF
Distagon T* 2/35 ZF
Macro Lenses
Makro-Planar T* 2/50 ZF
Makro-Planar T* 2/100 ZF
«The new ZEISS ZF lenses went to test for resolving power recently. Attached to a Nikon F6, which was mounted on a Sachtler heavy duty tripod, we exposed our Eastman resolution test chart onto Kodak Imagelink HQ film. The best we had ever achieved before with any SLR lenses was 250 lp/mm.
The new Planar T* 1.4/85 ZF achieved that same resolution at f/5.6, and even down to f/2.
The new Planar T* 1,4/50 ZF went even further: It reached 320 lp/mm in the aperture range from f/5.6 to f/2.8, and 250 lp/mm at f/2.»

Hello Everyone, here is a link for more info and cost breakdown on the zeiss lenses:

Evinsky had some great info on step-up rings and focus gears for better overall physical conformity from lens to lens. If you ask him nice he may offer to do it for you at his asking price ;-)

Hope this helps, I know alot of us are looking at these while we wait for the zoom and for other lens developments.

Does anybody know how badly those new zeiss primes breathe?
From Zeiss site.
ZF lenses provide Nikon F-mount cameras with the creative potential and phototechnical performance available so far only in the Contax system. In addition, ZF lenses incorporate new technical advances from the ZEISS Ultra Prime®, Master Prime® and DigiPrime® lenses for motion picture cameras. Results have been seen in feature films like "Lord of the Rings", "Alexander", "King Arthur", "Air Force One", "Collateral", "King Kong" and many commercials and music clips. Come to think about it, the Zeiss ZM series seems to be even more interesting. There are super wide lenses that we need (missing a large aperture 18mm though), most of every thing is F2.8 on the wide side.

Plus the long history of Leica and abundant supply from Cosina (under the Voigtlander name), the Russian and now Zeiss, we have plenty of choices, from exotic and prohibitively expensive to extremely affordable.
Don't forget, one of the biggest reasons that range finder cameras have survived is the better wide angle lens design compare with those made for SLRs that need to take the mirror movement into consideration.
Like other posters have mentioned, I just wish RED will come up with a Leica M adapter when they first ship the camera and not ask us to resort to a third party solution.

Does anybody know how badly those new zeiss primes breathe?
I would imagine no more or less than a similar focal length Nikon or Canon lens. Still photographers are not concerned with breathing because they don't record it. These are the little details you pay so much for in Master primes and Cooke S4s.

These are the little details you pay so much for in Master primes and Cooke S4s.and on the red zoom lens?.. i'll hope will be breath-proof.. i mean really avoiding the breathing like they should be all the motion picture lenses.. they should be.. why do you mention just these two examples?

Hey Emanuel, thank you for the links. I certainly have alot more to think about since this set was my first choice for a complete set. I will be very interested to see how the Zeiss (Cosina) lenses that were announced at Photokina stack up in future tests. I have many new concerns:( .

Three things:
- breathe is a problem, but you can fix it with an animated crop later in post, so it is not crucial.
- breathe applies when going from infinite to a very close object (or the other way around), which is something you might do once or twice during a whole film. I would not worry about that.
- Most importat to know: how many degrees does the focus ring take on the Zeiss lenses from infinite to closest point? If we get more than 180º then no doubt i would consider as a cheap alternative to cine lenses.

What???
"Zeiss-branded 50mm f/1.4 ZF, 2006.
It's made by Cosina in Japan. I call it Zeiss-branded instead of Zeiss because it's not made by Zeiss and it's not made in Germany. "
Overall on that test, the new Zeiss performs really badly, and does not make sense to pay for it other than the name. Nikon seems a better and more inteligent buy.
