So I was at Fred Meyer today and I saw some fog machines on sale for 19.99, I bought one and its works great. Its actually built pretty well and is better quality then I thought it was going to be for $20. I've used a $450 machine a couple months back and it was awesome, however, these little $20 ones are worth the money.

We used some cheap fog machines we bought last Halloween at Walmart on a film shoot and everything worked out find...

Scope the sales on fog fluid the day after halloween too. A few years ago I stocked up on $1/quart at a K-mart the day after halloween, still have a bunch left...

Will do.

After holiday sales are the best. Its like they dont even care what the price is, they just want it gone.

Remember, do not wash out your fog machine between shoots or "rinse" it through with water. Pour the majority of the solution back into the bottle between shoots and let what's left sit in there between uses.

Straight water will damage foggers pretty quick.

Yeah, I was going to ask about the proper way to clean them. I used some cleaning solution in the past with higher end fog machines, but these cheaper ones dont come with any. The instructions are also written in really bad English, so they dont do a good job at explaining how to clean.

I grabbed a couple of fog machines at Target after Halloween last year for $5 each. As Barry said, the fog juice is insanely cheap then, too.

do you guys find that the cheap fog fluid gets your lenses sticky at all or does it not seem to be a problem? i took a pass on the leftover halloween stuff last year just becuase i wasnt sure of the results as far as residue.

I bought a fog machine at The Do It Center for 39.95 and it was junk. The problem I have seen with them is that you cannot override the auto shut off and put as much fog in as you want to.

I've never had a problem at all. Make sure you get stuff that is water based (I think most of them are). I still wouldn't shoot it directly into the lens, but it's a nice, cheap effect.

Fog fluid is water based, and will not leave a residue unless it is pointed directly at something.

Also, never clean out your machine. The fog fluid is used for making fog, but the machine relies on it to lubricate the inner parts.

ALSO, I built a fog cooler (simply feeding fog through a cooler of ice) and I get phenomonal result. You dont get big fog, you get super-low lying dense fog that looks spooky, and it flows in an errie way.
