Is it possible to record to a Firestore and preview on a laptop at the same time?

No, you only have one firewire output so you have to choose one or the other. But you can record on DV Rack so there's no real need to record to a firestore simultaneously, is there?

The system I'm previewing on is several years old (1.6 Pentium M) DriveRack HD needs a faster system to run and I'm assuming that's for recording. Am I wrong?

You may want to try it just in case....download the demo and see if your machine can handle it. I have a pentium m 1.73 and believe it or not got some decent results. I can play back just fine and seemed to have no problems recording. I remember talking to one of the serious magic guys awhile back because I was concerned about this. The guy said he wouldn't reccomend slower than a 2 gig cpu, but that dvcpro will take less juice than the hdv codec so it may work. Note he did say he didn't recommend it ( I don't want to start any rumors(: Anyhow so far I've had no problems going direct to disk. Time will tell. I don't know if this is true or not but i heard the pentium M when plugged in is faster?

The DVCPro codecs are intra-frame compression codecs, so unlike with HDV's inter-frame compression you don't need all the preceeding frames in order to decode the current frame. It therefore doesn't matter if your CPU can't always keep up with the decoding process.

Whether a given laptop is any faster when it is plugged into AC power is implementation-specific -- it may be true for some models, but certainly not all. Also check the Power Options applet in the Control Panel to see if the processor is being throttled back when running on DC in order to prolong battery life.

Thanks for the help guys. I don't have a HVX yet (next month) but I was getting my ducks in a row. After I get the camera I give the demo a try.
