This started on the Workflow thread, but I felt this concept deserved a chance to get out on its own.

What about the red software being able to accept "plug ins".

Think of this as a souped up version of the settings cards that the SDX900 and Varicam have. Except our cards can not only accept camera settings, but also upload special features and codecs from Third Party Vendors?

I'm trying to think a little out of the box here. I cannot say for sure what the benefits (if any) would be, or if it's possible, but I do know that this is a logical evolutionary step for the camera.

No matter how hard Jim and the others try, they will want to make changes later on, this would be a way for them to upgrade the camera and keep those us us who purchased with the most up to date system.

I think the plug-ins idea would be cool. It might be cool to share different camera settings over the internet via a plug-in that would create different digital film "looks" etc.

By shooting RAW, in-camera plug-ins are useless. All the artistic decisions are made when "developing" the RAW files.

I suppose RedCine will accept plug-ins or be able to save/exchange settings.

I hear you, but what about camera settings, and is it not true you will also be able to shoot straight without using the RAW setting?

Exactly!
I've been wishing for plugin's or even simple settings maps to be possible for my 20D SLR ... would be awesome for RED.
CineAlta's have use memory sticks to store camera configurations, but having a "plugin" or some other API/SDK intereface would be fantastic !!

One, super-simple example cycle would be to fire a pre-programed HDR series on demand. This way, a seperate camera wouldn't be needed to acquire HDR images for VFX shots. Just run out with your reflective ball between takes, callup your preconfigured HDR plugin or preset and fire .... RED acquires 6-12 4k frames, each with progressively longer shutter speeds as their own take. These frames could be post-processed later to generate a full HDR to be used for CG lighting and reflections in Post.

Well, that's one example anyway.

This was already discussed in the "Developer I/O"-thread.

Ahhh. thanks.
Despite my "join date", I just started posting here and didn't know about the other thread.
I'll find it and cross-post to there if that's the main discussion.
Thanks.
