View Full Version : Continuing Problems w/Quicktime

Ever since Avid 5.2.4 was purchased and installed for two (2) PCs running XP Pro, Quicktime has been a problem. More specifically, Quicktime Reference files simply do not playback correctly-on either PC. PCs are not at all identical in config and should not have any horsepower problems (dual Xenon, AMD dual core, 1GB memory, SCSI drives, nVidia video card, eVGA video card).

In 5.2.4, playback fps was around 6-7; now, in 5.5.3 & QT 7.1.3, it is "up" to around 15fps (instead of 23.98). Files exported DNxHD, etc. etc. seem to playback fine-it's just Quicktime Reference that's a drag. Based on a couple of other postings, have tried VLC player (no luck even getting an image), Quicktime Alternative (even worse playback-i.e. around 6 fps and very jerky), and Media Player Classic (even worse-as in preceding). Since the latter two use the QT 7.1.3 codecs, it would seem that the problem lies in the player itself-the PC version anyway.

Yes, using other compression schemes is a work-around but a time & space consuming one. So, 1) has any other PC user experienced this, or not? If not, could you please detail config? 2) Do Mac users use QTref and, if so, any problems? Any help on this greatly appreciated.

P.S. Have examined Preferences in QT;using "Safe Mode" really slows things down; also, have made sure latest Avid codecs and Directx version are installed.

Do you have use AVID codec checked in the export dialog box?

Is this HD footage or DV25?

What do you do with the QT ref? (import into After Effects, Sorenson)

Does it playback jerky from those applications?

well, basically, QT reference files are not going to be your best choice for playback . . . they are not movies, but reference files for other applications to be able to find the raw files and instruction set. As carlone said above, you would send them to Sorenson Squeeze or a similar application to complete the process . . . thereby getting manageable files for streaming, DVD, whatever your pleasure.

Posters are correct, Quicktime reference files will not playback decently on their own. You should use a compression program to output your files, especially if your QTs are big in size.
