16x9 480p?

Because the hvx uses a 16x9 ship, when shooting 480p 24p (or24pA) do you get "anamorphic" 480p on minidv tape? If not, what does miniDV tape record?

Depends what you have it set for. If you're shooting 4:3 or letterbox you'll get a traditional 4:3 image. If you shoot stretch (which is kind of the wrong name - should be native or widescreen) you'll have an 853x480 image anamorphically scaled down to 720x480 in the miniDV spec.

You will get native 16x9 480p, yes. But there are no extra pixels, all DV is 720x480 whether it's 4x3 or 16x9.

let me put it this way then. Watching anamorphic DVDs on my native 16x9 projector looks great. Will I be getting that resolution with miniDV?

Yes. Anamorphic (non-square pixels) MiniDV and SD DVDs have the exact same resolution, 720x480.

Alright, one more thing. It sounds like then there is no difference between miniDV on the HVX and a DVX with the ana lens. It the workflow different? Is it any easier with the HVX? To me the only real advantage is that with the HVX you get the 16x9 anamorphic and can also add a 35mm adapter (which I believe you can't do on the DVX with the ana lens)

Is there any other advantage to minidv on HVX compared to DVX?

HVX widescreen DV is much better than DVX+Anamorphic Adapter Widescreen DV. MUCH BETTER. I have both and use them together a lot. Usually the HVX for my closeup and the DVX+Adapter for wide.

One other thing. The DVX+Anamorphic Adapter is a bit complicated to focus properly, it cuts some of the zoom range because of vignetting, and there is considerable distortion of straight lines at the edge at some zoom settings. With the HVX its all native camera work so there are none of these complications or restrictions. So not only is it MUCH BETTER, its easier to shoot, too.
