Used AE7 for title screen, and Vegas 6 for the rest.

Used Color Correction (Secondary) and Brightness and Contrast for CC in final cut.

Shot in letterbox so cropped final image before compressing.

I have a BTS tape, but with only 2 crew and 4 hours to shoot, it was difficult to get a ton of footage.

One funny thing: While we were filming at the coffee house, this ~70 year old woman (short riding on a motorcyle w/ a red helmet and few teeth) approaches us out of no where and states that she is "hulk hogan's younger sister". This makes it to the final credits if you care to notice, but another interesting detail was the person driving the motorcycle was a ~35 year old man who kept asking us if we liked Howard Stern. He then asks "want me to ride my motorcycle into the pizza place (next door) and order one?" He was serious. The couple had been married 2 weeks previous.

The BTS footage has some shots of them, so I'll post something soon, so you TOO can see Hulk Hogan's younger sister in action!

My thoughts:
Ha!! Nice tripod in the opening scene just chillin' on the street. The audio Levels in the cafe clip out really bad. The make up was superb on that dude. Shots outside were very nice. The suspense of just staying on the character was good, but I think it may have lingered a bit too long but that actually could help. I kept trying to figure out what he was saying. WOwa.. the attack. Man, it made my heart sink to think that could happen to anyone. Visually, I dug the look a Lot! Plot? plain and simple. to the point. Music/ambience was perfect for the film. Kudos.

you're twisted man.

I thought that we could have gotten out of the coffee shop and out of the dude in the woods a lot faster. It was waaay to slow and didn't develope the characters. For all I know she burnt the crap out of him and hes getting her back and not him just stalking her. After we get out of the coffee scene though it gets good I thought, the stabbing was nice a graphic but I think she would have been screaming her head off and making gargling sounds after the knife penetrates the lungs. I think if we would have gotten out of the coffee shop quicker and have him kill her quicker then you can do something like him really examining his work or something. Just a thought.

Way to throw a movie together at the last minute and on a budget. It looked great!

Overall, it had a nice, gritty look to it. Cinematography was great, as was editing. You had the tension building from the start.

Why did you hold such a lengthy shot on the girl's purse/wallet?

Sound was not so good. This especially bothered me when I couldn't hear what psychokiller was saying, but then realized that was probably intentional.

All the closeups on the killer were quite scary. I was loving the tension, but at a point it kind of got to be too much. I quickly went from the edge of my seat, to move on, already!

I didn't really get the story. I mean, I understand he's a stalker and he's crazy and then he kills her. But should there be more to it?

Again, cinematography was really great. I'm really impressed with what you made in such a short period of time. And again - psycho dude - scary.

Good work.

haha, thanks man! I wanted it to be real life.... no closure...

In my mind, this is a crazy deranged person, don't know his past, sees this woman, he doesn't know, and is convinced she's done him wrong and she deserves it... There is no history, he's just that insane.. I can see where it is a little much....

Thanks for watchin!

I didn't really get much out of the story, except how it reminded me of the way I generally interact with women - from far away and behind a bush. :)

But I thought the end was very very well done. The shots, the make-up FX, the performances, the editing made for a very good killing. Good bit for a reel too, I think.

I thought leading up to it, many of the shots were good, but unmotivated. There were a lot of shots of the killer, her in the coffee shop - what IS it with coffee shops in this fest? - but I didn't get the feeling that they added up to a flow. It might be interesting to tighten it up and pick some specific shots and see if it propels things a little more.

The sound design on the killing was awesome. I mean the sounds of the knife and stabbing. They were a mix of things, it seemed, but not always what I would associate with a knife going into a body. But they did really catch my attention and spice that moment up nicely.

Review | POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT! I watch the movies first time around strictly for enjoyment, second and third for review.

Good job on entering the fest on short notice. I'm jealous!

Script - Was there one? I wouldn't doubt it. Not going to go into depth here. But, there wasn't a story for me to follow, which means this probably should've been a lot shorter than it was.

Direction - Some good frame-ups. Hand camera shots for the most part, seemed to catch the necessary action. Sure there wasn't too much time to really dig into that kinda stuff either.

Acting - Your leading lady had a serious thing about her hair. SHe kept playing with it a bit toooo much for me. It was distracting after the third time. The Maniac was as shakey as he was supposed to be I suppose.

Cine/Lighting - Bounce for exteriors? Only place it seemed to fall really shor twas in the Coffee Shop but, it's to be expected.

Editing - The place that editing had a chance to shine was during the stab session. It was good enough for me. Where it failed was probably in the over all cut. This was minutes longer than it had to be. Especially if you weren't going to establish the relationship between the killer and the be-killeded.

Sound - I really REALLY wanted to hear what he said. I think that would've at least added something. Maybe he's uttering something important we need to know as to why he's about to stab her in the same exact spot like fifty times?

Special Effects - Best stab session I've seen in the fest so far. The first hit was kinda brutal, the second couple were laced tight in editing and it seemed real. The only one I had aproblem with was the final. I could tell it was something that wasn't human after that point. Good going on the blood spitting. I think the impact was made stronger by the editing as well. I did not like his make-up. Looked like he just needed to wash his face. That was also an expense of time and/or money that could've been saved on... it didn't seem to be of any importance.

Scariest Moments - First stab, then the one when she's on her back and the blood's coming out of her mouth. Whoo. Brutal.

Overall consensus - You could probably chop this down dramatically and have the exact same impact on the audience. You'll avoid people wanting to skip through the parts that really don't move the footage forward at all. Good job on getting something in at last minute times.

The pacing dragged up to the killing. The graphic extremity of the kill after suffering the lead up made me feel a little dirty, like I was watching a snuff flick or something. Kudos for gore though, it made me wince away from the screen. I would equally have liked to have seen him trip on some garbage cans just as he was moving in and land in a pile of garbage while cursing under his breath.... while she walks off in the distance maybe chatting on her phone.

If this was made into 3' it would be one of the best!!!
The coffe house sequence was way too long for me, I understand what you tried to achieve there but especially for a 6min film, it went on and on....

I also disagree with the type of knife you used....but that's just the serial killer in me....

I loved the editing and the killing frames you used..it was very realistic....as for the story...well I couldnt make out what he was saying while watching her...the sound was ...sorry but cant find another word but 'bad'....however you made a great horror/psycho thriller flick by using the typical CRAZY PSYCHO PEEPING TOM theme....it worked great for me!

Really, if it was shorter I would watch it again and again but I have to be honest...second time i skipped most of it to go to the end sequence....

ps. nice touch with the coffe shop in&out bits...the sound transitioned very well even though the levels were way off...

Hey greeches, good job on your film! It has so many good things going for it.

I like the slow, methodical pace leading up to the murder. I was wanted it to push forward but when it didn't it created an uneasy tension in me. I think that is a good thing in your film.

The performances by your actors were great. So subtle. Nothing unnatural at all. Such a "day in the life" feel about it. (a bad day... for her!)

The cinematography and camera work were well done. Just some outstanding imagery you have going on there.

The make-up was great. I don't know what is suppose to be wrong with that guy, but his make-up was flawless. (I tink that I've seen people like this before... I'll be a little more careful in the future!)

That was a sick knife and stabbing scene. The best that I've seen. My one criticism was that the first blow and the shot of her immediately afterwards looked like too much blood. The blood was all the way up around the collar and yet he stabbed her in the, um, uh.. the chest. This caught my eye both times that I viewed your film.

Again, great camera work and editing. It was a very simple but disturbing film. I hope that is what you were going for!

Well done! Looking forward to more of your work!

Ted

I disagree with Kohli, I kinda liked the makeup.

Pace suffered, cinematography was decent, but nothing spectacular.

The stabbing was a bit disturbing. Good sound design. I think it suffered a bit with the editing though, after the first three I could tell it wasn't the girl that was being stabbed. Maybe if you could have got a bit of movement in there? I dunno. I've never been brutally stabbed so I'm not sure how much "pain squirming" would be going on.

I liked it, but wish it had had a bigger story.

Greeches been a fan of yours since way back now.

I think I understand what you’re trying to achieve as an artist, an overall feeling, solid creepy images, and brutality.

It worked.
Yeah it was a little light on script, but man I love your style.

Loved the make-up, best killing - realistic wise, that knife was wicked looking.
I felt genuinely shocked when the attack finally happened. No compromises just as it would be, vicious and bloody.

A beautiful looking gore fest for me, thanks for making it.

This didn't work for me. I know this is hororfest, and stalking women and gratuitous gore are among the unfortunate conventions of horror, but because there was so little character development -- why is he stalking her? -- it felt overly gratuitous. I didn't care about the character being stalked at all since I saw her face so seldom and when I did, her expressions were mostly vapid, and I didnt care about the stalker because I had no clues as to his motivation. And everytime there was a CU on his make-up, it took me out of the story completely -- it looked like make-up, not skin, and it interfered with my suspension of disbelief. And finally, if I were walking down an empty street and some guy were following me within the distance that guy was -- believe me, I'd know it and be doing something about it -- like calling 911 loudly and obviously on my cell phone, turning into one of those yards where I thought people were at home, something. So, for me, it was just another, "Let's slice up a woman" film, and I don't think those really add anything new to the genre. On the positive side, the gore was realistic; I just wish you'd gone for more than that.

This movie looks great but the story seemed pretty much non-existent.
A shame, because if you had a great story looking like this you would be competing with the best in this fest. Now it's more like a style practice. I'll try and do an extended review later in october if I can find the time.

I thought this was one of the better films. There wasn't much in terms of story, but...

I thought it was very well shot - I really like the camera work. I think it was the only films that was shot outside during the day and didn't look like total crap.

I also thought the stabbing bit was very effective - much more than a lot of the others that tried to use aftereffects or cg to pull off the stunts. Sometimes stabbing a dummy (I'm assuming) is better.

The acting and makeup were good. How did you do the guy's face?

The only thing that needs work is the sound, it was really bad - it kind of sounded like you used the onboard mic. You could easily fix it though with some ADR and foley.

Another film that sounded like it was processed through a flanger...

And another flat out snuff film.

This one hard's to rate because as I was somewhat put off by it's gratuitous violence, the thing looked damn good!

This one makes a great opening scene to feature thriller. I hope you guys can build a good screenplay around this and do something bigger.

But as a stand alone piece, I couldn't recommend it to anyone.

Hey greeches. Sorry to be repetitive, but I do feel that it's a shame that you didn't develop a story or characters around this. It was REALLY well shot. The lighting, the camerawork, the villain looked interesting, the girl was pretty. If you just went the extra mile and made a complete story you'd be in a really good place. This is especially true since so many shots lingered for so long. You could have really fit something into this.

The makeup job and violence was very realistic. Both the man and woman had great performances during the attack.

I'd love to see what else you have done/can do.

Don't forget story next time.

Beautiful to watch...

Have a good one.

Just finally getting the time to copy the notes I compiled in a Word doc while watching the shorts:

Cool title, sound could have blended/transitioned better into the film. Some GREAT camera work & use of 35mm adapter, but it got a little excessive with the hand held at times on the girl getting coffee. I think a cool way to have gone about this, and two have separated the worlds even that much more of the stalker and the victim, would be to have had smoother more in control shots of the girl (when we’re with her at least), and shaky hand-held when we’re on the guy who’s out of control. When viewing from his POV, those could also have been shaky. 3:51 – not sure if this was planned or not, but that lens flare there (glints in his eyes as well) is absolute MONEY! While there was a nice use of blood here, I felt it was too excessive too quickly. She’s only been stabbed once & her front is already covered in blood, not to mention just as he’s pulling the knife out, we already see blood on her back? This was actually fairly well edited, but I have to knock it down some in this area for not figuring out how to compress/render out to 16x9 .. the player is that ratio, but the film is obviously still 4:3 ratio. A good editor is going to know delivery formats, and how to get the film into them correctly.

Wow Dave, your work on this movie clip is inspiring, to me. I'm in the process of getting my first DV camera so I can shoot some short movies, so I'm a complete beginner where DV shooting is concerned.. I write and have written screenplays, but I've never shot anything myself.

I know a lot of people said the pacing was too slow, at the beginning, but I think it was dead on. Even though I knew something bad was going to happen to that girl, the slow pace at the beginning allowed me to relax, then tense up a bit, then outright shock at the stabbing scene. The stabbing scene caused me to involuntarily jump back from my monitor. As someone who loves horror when it's done well.. who's tired of the victimized woman in boring, gratuitous slasher movies, that last scene got to me. Great job!

Visually, I loved this clip. However, I have to agree about the lack of a story. It would've been more impactful if we were given a reason to care about this woman... maybe throw in a shot or two of her talking on her cell phone with her fiance, spouse or her child... maybe shopping for a wedding gown, etc. This would give a sense of how horrible it is when a life is interrupted by random violence. This would cause the viewer to be able to relate more to the victim more.

I only hope that when I do get my DVX100a and start shooting, my shots are as good as yours.

The film would have been more believable if she went to Lilly's Pizza instead! :) Haha, only kidding. I could tell it was Glenwood from the still. Great use of the location. Excellent work for just 4 hours of effort.

I didn't know Graham worked on this (soundtrack wise) I am a friend of his, I'll have to kick him in the knee next time I see him for not mentioning it!! :)
