Im not sure if this has been brought up before, but in many special effects shots that I've done, there has been a need to run the output image through a laptop and have other scenery or footage overlayed the existing footage in realtime in order to reference it.

Maybe im not explaining it too well, say youre shooting a scene where an actor is duplicated into an evil twin and needs to talk to himself and somewhat interact with himself naturally. Or lets say your trying to shoot a perspective to match up with another scene that you shot at another location. In either cases you could run the image out in realtime through the laptop and have the footage overlayed in realtime at a very low transperent alpha.

I think it would be cool if you could overlay footage or a still TIFF in the LCD in realtime so that you could pefectly frame and match those SFX shots.

I agree. And imagine having the video overlay directly in-camera - that would be even cooler! :-)

Great idea.
I've personally spent a lot of time installing a Quantel Micro Henry ON SET, just to show a match (CGI - loop video) to the director.

Not in camera - but you could take the HD-SDI feed into standard gear to do this.

Any HD Blackmagic card will key a still image with alpha over an HD-SDI signal using the Blackmagic LiveKey application or OnAir with a MultiBridge, and I belive AJA have an application (Kona TV?) which will superimpose a moving QuickTime with an alpha channel over the incoming video.
