4K is impressive no doubt. Red will sell on that alone....However. Since it has been said by experienced people on this forum that most red users will probably use 1080p rather than 4k, how good will red's 1080p compare to others? Lets ignore the fact that you can shoot 4k and down scale to 1080p and concentrate on what we actually get.

First thoughts for me is in the lattitude and low light specs. 11 stops maybe 12 or who knows maybe even higher! That has got to be impressive compared to other camera'a. A real winner for red surely?

Low light: The sensor is what, around 5.4 microns (guessing from memory here) surely the bigger the pixels the better the low light performance right? A real winner for red surely?

However what about resolution in 1080p, how does that compare with other camera's. I read on this forum somewhere that to get full resolution in 1080p you really need more than two million pixels. Does the size of the sensor pixels then put red at a disadvantage at 1080p?

I know resolution is not everything, but ignore that for the time being and give an opinion on what you think.

I would think that since you are actually shooting 4K and downsizing that it will be better that any other 1080.

You may want to consider that the statements about most people shooting 1080 or 2k were made before the workflow info released at IBC. I think that now a lot more people are going to consider 4k, although I'm sure the downscaled formats will also be very popular.

not all 1080p's are equal !!
lets see we have different size sensors .. 960 x540 ... 960x1080 .. 1440x1080 .. 1920x1080 ..

then there is what the camera's record to their onboard media ( usb, tape , p2 ) which may be different then what they output output thru HD-SDI ..

camera's record different color space 4:2:0, 3:1:1 , 4:2:2, 4:4:4 ... again color space may be different out HD-SDI

and some persons may want varible frame rates at 1080p .. 120fps , 60fps

so depending on your wants/needs you take all the figures above of your wants then see which camera fits .. AND bottom line is always the IMAGE on the screen playing at 24/30fps ( not looking at a still frame)

Well, RED should have the nicest 1080p you've ever seen as:

a) very oversampled - from 4k down to 1080p
b) it's low noise to begin with
c) colour and image processing are great.

It will be real 1080p - not any of those fake ones.

Not to mention you get true 35mm DOF even in 1080 (which none of the other cameras will give you) and the dynamic range should be out of this world. No contest.
