Would love to hear some juicy details about the 18-85
1) estimated weight, length?
2) optics by? (e.g., most current panavision
optics are made by Leica)
3) coatings? Jannardium?
4) will it cover full 35mm academy aperture (as
opposed to just s35 height) - important for use on
other PL mount 35mm film cams?
5) Ts as opposed to Fs
6) front diameter (nice to know for matte boxes, screw on filters)
7) internal filter slot?
8) internal auto iris?
9) internal auto focus?

Beyond the focal length range, 18-85mm, the only detail about the lens that RED has stated was Jim Jannard mentioning that it would be considered a "compact" zoom. To me, that simply means that it will not be a gigantic, long, inordinately heavy lens. Jim has also mentioned that it would be a top-quality lens. He owns a huge collection of cameras and lenses, and, with optics being Oakley's traditional core business, I would guess that he definitely knows the difference between a top-quality lens and a mediocre lens.

Beyond these few details, anything else is just conjecture. The zoom isn't projected to ship until late next year, so it should be at least a few months before more details on the lens are released. My feelings are that it will be an outstanding lens that will end up being in demand by not just RED users, but the cinematic production community in general.

Hey filmmaker1977...yeah, "compact" is good! Thanks for the kind words...

When I go on productions I can't post for a few days, which will happen this Friday-Sunday as I work as DP for a television program featuring a professional golf tournament.

Cheers!

4) will it cover full 35mm academy aperture
opposed to just s35 height) - important for use on
other PL mount 35mm film cams?
(Not stated yet)

5) Ts as opposed to Fs
(f2.8, no T-stop stated yet)

6) front diameter (nice to know for matte boxes, screw on filters)
(Not stated yet)

7) internal filter slot?
(Not stated yet)

8) internal auto iris?

Ha ha...it's always nice to be kept around for something!

Tons of us would like to hear more about the zoom. I'm sure RED will fill in the blanks when they see fit. I've reserved the 18-85 zoom and the 300mm prime because both of them will get a lot of use in the various genres I shoot in. As with my reservation for the RED One camera, the lens reservations are a leap of faith that I'm comfortable with...

Sadly for me I cannot reserve the 18mm-85mm zoom.. The reason for this is that the zoom is not coming out with the camera. Therefore I will need to have cash for another zoom in order to get started. Also I will have to most likely fork over $2,500 for an EVF and another $1,000 for the REDrive. Plus most likely $1,500 for REDrails.

Before anyone asks, THESE ARE GUESSES. But it's responsible for me to expect at least an additional $7,000 in extra gear to get the camera up and running within 8 weeks of my purchase. That, plus the lens which will not arrive for a while is too big of a risk.

I will get it, just later

Of course, I might have gotten the lens... If I had a RED T-shirt...
