Congrats on the entry! Glad you could jump aboard. Good luck with the process.
As for that new actress... does she look good in a bikini? There is a thread around here that seems to be relying on that approach!
Keep us posted!
Oh yeah, Title???

Welcome man! I really hope that your entry and some other are going to be so messy and disturbing. I am a huge blood and gore fan but I found out throught the years that nothing really makes me feel sick anymore, i've seen so much that i have developped some kind of immunity system or something, i found 'hostel' funny, i found 'saws' nothing special....even 'oldboy' which was more grim and gritty was not what i was hoping for...
nowadays i get more disturbing feelings when i come across a good psychological horror movie rather than with blood n gore stuff that put it all in your face....
from what i've seen in this festival however, I hope that there are going to be some stories and images really amazing in terms of sickness and believe me when i say this but an amateur low-budget horror movie is ALWAYS more disturbing than a clean-cut hollywood-style movie...

I agree with Versus. Gore does nothing for me anymore. Not to say it won't be a good movie...I just don't get bothered/shocked by it anymore.
As for title...I think he should go with "Punched in the Gut!" by Spencer Katz!

hah punched in the gut. title is gonna be hard, this actress is just as good looking as the other one.. but well make due. i just hope everyone shows up for the shoots. sat, sun, and monday. then i gotta score it, then do sfx which theres a LOT of! its gonna be cool. but sorry its not a psychological, its more of a... texas chainsaw style, but that doesnt mean theres no suspense or anything... but i mean, its six minutes haha

Hello -
Meat tenderizers hurt.
Great location. Those opening shots looked very nice and serene.
Did you use some sort of adapter? The shots looked kind of weird and fuzzy at the start.
Actors - the acting was okay. However, I didn't really get any sense of their relationships or any character development at all. So when they were getting knocked off one by one, I didn't really feel anything (be it sad, upset, relieved, amused, whatever). The actor strung up on the table - he always looked like he was smirking, even after seeing his friend get stabbed, even after being tortured. That was weird. And it's always a good idea to give your actors some dialogue if they're having trouble improvising (lest they just drop a bunch of f-bombs in a row). Even though this may be the only thing you would think to say if you were actually being chased by a murderous psychokiller, it doesn't translate well onscreen.
Overall, your cinematography was good. Editing was great - definitely a strong suit for you. Score was a little hokey at times. It would've lent itself better to classic 70s or 80s horror rather than a gory slasher flick. The screenplay was kind of a weak point - and there wasn't a real "ending" per se...what motivated the killer? Why do we care that the heroine dies at the end? What's the killer going to do next? Who is the killer? etc.
Good job overall. Kept my attention throughout. And meat tenderizers...ouch.

Overall very creepy, very bloody, very messy....
Excellent use of location and frames/angles...good lighting as well...
Soundtrack wasnt so special to be honest....probably after watching 40 movies so far..they all start to sound the same unfortunately...
I was put off by the actors a bit...when they looked up to their friend up on the cliff...the guy in the glasses seemed like he was gonna laugh....that was putting me out of the mood....
I loved the colors and the visuals...and the mask!! loool!!!
Big disappointment though the ending...so she runs out...falls down..then what? the file i have just ends there...does the guy drag her back inside and that's it? I think the story is as simple as it can get but maybe that direct thing works good...

yah the ending i had was the guy drags her back inside, not much of an ending, but im glad you all liked the rest. and as far as the guy on the table. he just could not stop smirking. so annoying but thanks fro the comments!

Matt Sconce's Review of Spencer Katz's Movie
SPOLIERS POSSIBLE!
Script
This felt like a moment in a feature to me. We don't know why there is a killer, who the killer is, or what his/her motivation is. I see why you need the extra time, so the story can develop more.
Acting
I liked the acting in this and thought it worked well!
Cinematography
Absolutely beautiful work here. I thought the colors were rich and vibrant and I liked the way you deepened the black in the images. The scenes were just nicely done!
Overall Impressions
An interesting, beautifully shot movie that feels like a clip from a indie feature. (That is a good thing!)

I think the killer should go to grab her. The girl should grab a stick or something...maybe I knife she hid in the struggle, maybe the little hammer and crack or stab the villain. The villain should fall over dead and the police should show up, put a blanket around the girl and take her away from the place. As she is sitting some distance away she tells them the killer is in there and that she killed the evil person. They should then reply that there was nobody like that in there, only her friends. She then realizes the killer is still alive and we see the panic in her eyes as the movie closes. Just my 2 cents and a nickel. :)

Review | POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT! I watch the movies first time around strictly for enjoyment, second and third for review.
Hey guys. I got a chance to check your UNTITLED short out. A neat surprise, visually.
Script - I didn't see one here. I heard some dialogue that'd fit right into a horror movie. Use of curse words at the right moments didn't seem like anything but horror. However, I didn't see any kind of story. It's neat that he should've taken the knife with him, so sad. All in all I see this as an excuse to shed some blood and while that's BASICALLY what a Horror movie is about... they generally also entail information that lets me know who's killing, why he's killing, and how it's all going to really end. All I know is that this person has long red hair and hangs out in the woods until kids come along that want to camp.
Direction - This is your strongest feature and ultimately why I watched it twice. I really wanted to pay attention to your framing and camera action. I liked your short visually. I think it's some of the best visuals of the fest and part of that is attributed to great camera action. I did NOT like your beginning shot. It was actually the worst one of the short to me. I did like the framing on your victims being dragged, especially the guy being pulled through the grass. That was kinda creepy on it's own. I didn't like the first death scene. It looked more like a memoir all of a sudden, if that makes sense.
Acting - Forced and deliberate. Can't really do too much abotu this, anyway. Especially if you've got basically no budget. The first death scene stands out to me: it looked like your guy wanted to laugh or something. The line delivery was stodgy, but again I can't really fault anyone for it. Your killer had something interesting going on, in that he kept forcing himself to step down really hard. Like stomp almost. IT was like someone that was playing a killer and not being a killer.
Cine/Lighting - Inform me of what you used on the scenes. I'm wagering that the exterior shots had some kind of bounce going on. Maybe not. Whatever happened I really dig the overall look of your short. It's got a very cinematic vibe that I think a lot of people strive for. The adapter got your footage a little dirty on the four corners, which sucks, but otherwise I liked your choice of composition and the like. Really made the blood shine. The basement was well lit enough for me.
Editing - I felt the editor made some nice choices on how long to hold scenes. There were also some bad intercuts. The first that comes to mind is the first death scene, the sudden intrusion of the guy's tennis shoes was kinda uncessary to know. Unless it came before the actual show of blood dripping from the mouth. A good hold was the guy being pulled through the grass. I liked being able to see him being yanked and hearing him spout foul words as I watched him go bye-bye. I also liked the cut in of the log that the dude tripped on. Horror-like.
Sound -Whooo that music was bad. Sorry to say it so blunt, but it was the worst part of this entire thing. I would've enjoyed good foley over the soundtrack. Case in point: When the killer is descending the stair case. Creaking stairs over silence would've been so much better than what you actually heard. A lot of ambience would work for this if you wanted to take it a step further. Voices sounded clear enough to hear. Sounds really good in this fest go-round.
Special Effects/Art Direction/Wardrobe - Your choice of scene locals were good. I can totally see that cliff being in a movie. I also liked the basement. I didn't know what was up with the spray painted walls, though. That took me back to the city when they were supposed to be in the woods or forest. Your blood looked syrupy, but didn't sit on the bad side at all. There was plenty of it, that's for darned sure.
Scariest Moments - The guy being dragged through the grass. Stuff like that always strikes me as realistic, even though it's so subtle. It's like he's DEFINITELY being taken off to be killed.
Overall consensus - Story and soundtrack is murdering this one in a large pool of blood and nonsense while the visuals actually do well to keep it afloat. I'd recut for sound and add foley, but nothing's going to change the story. Maybe you've got a longer version in the works? A great visual piece nonetheless. Thanks for exhibiting!
