Hey Briceman! Glad you are going to be able to enter something into the fest. I have a feeling that it wouldn't be the same without your input! (of course, I am just speculating since this is my fest!)
Good for you, man!
Wrapped already, huh. Gives you plenty of time to post BTS talk and pics. Don't have any? Make some up!
Brandon Rice
09-19-2006, 07:01 PM
Thanks man! It is sad I don't have BTS... that's cause it was such a darn spontaneous shoot and stuff... We literally went out for an hour and shot this piece. It's really coming together too! I am talking with Herman Witkam about doing the score. I am working on my color grading and tweaking my cuts right now. I'll add my settings and stuff to the top of the page later as well.... enjoy!
PS. Still need someone for effects.

It's easy, you just throw down your divx until something pops out and you squeeze the tape in as hard as you can, then squeeze this thing that popped out back in.....at least that's what I did

Oh yeah. She won best supporting actress for her role in the film I did for sci-fest, A Price Too High. It was her first big role in a film, of any kind... I wrote the script for her, because I knew she had the skilz... Here's the thread about the movie... Also, if you go to my website, there's a teaser trailer there...
Also, keep in mind, the DVXuser contest version was 6 min. while the full version of the film (Much better IMO) was 12 min.

um, how do you get that little black thingy off the front of the lens?
this is a bit trickier...so bare with me...
once you have the divx all ready to roll with your tape inside (make sure the thing is tightly shut, use some gaffer tape if needed) you then take a piece of rope and tie your camera up with one end of the rope, like a lasso, and then hold firmly to the other end of the rope and start moving it around as fast as you can and as high as you can, like you want to catch a bad guy running away, so (and this is the key point) when you feel that you've reached a top-speed of moving the lasso with your dvx around, release the rope and try to throw it as far away as possible (so you better do this outdoors). With any luck and if you've reached the desired speed and angle, the black thingy will come off very smoothly.
If you feel that all of the above is too damn hard, then take a hacksaw and chop the lens off. Releasing the lens off the camera will scare the black thingy and it will release its grip from the lens and slowly move away. Then use some super glue to make the lens a part of the camera once again.
You can find more details in my upcoming book, '100 things to do with your DVX before the end of the world'

So, was the time limit 12 minutes for that festival? Shesh! I could use an extra 2 minutes on my film!
Is there a was I can watch the entire film sometime?

So Brandon, I guess your location was your place right? Was there any problems with moving things around or did you use it as it was? I've used my place and Stratos' place quite a few times for our projects but we almost never move the furniture or add any elements unless its really really necessary.

Yes, it was my place. What is great is there's an awesome swingset in the front yard, and this creepy place behind the house that we used... I've always wanted to find a time to use that place, and finally did.

You have a backyard!!! I own a flat so backyard, front yard, inyard is out of the question. But we have a very cool basement that I will use for my next try. Actually the next project (set for January 2007) is called the Appartment and takes place at my building. Lots of stairs, lots of basement, lots of elevator....

Great news! I'd love to have title animation myself but I'm no good with AE...2 years ago I used to work as a product manager for the greek IMC for Apple so I got my hands on Final Cut, Livetype, Motion...I was really good with those...but leaving the company meant that I left this toys behind as well and I dont own a Mac so....
So good luck with your VFX!!!!

Well we have a lot of Earthquakes here as well, Greece is actually an earthquake-generating f****! But we have really strong policies in terms of building buildings (that sounded nice - say it 10 times really fast).

Brandon, dude! That was awesome! I just watched "A Price Too High." Great work!
I can see why your sis was won the award. Curious why she was nominated for a "supporting role" though. Wouldn't you consider her to be the lead?
And I hope that the agent was nominated. I loved his performance.
But, about your filmmaking talents. Wonderful! I love what you did. It looks so professional. (I know that is a stupid thing to say but it's true.)
How did you do the handheld stuff? It was so subtle.
And your editing was very nicely done. I especially liked your edit from her running into the door of the warehouse to the SUV pulling up. I had to stop the film and watch that frame by frame. Very slick!
And I can't say enough about the score. Kerr is great.
Thank you for sharing that with me!
Good luck in the festivals. (I don't know how you cut that for dvx's fest!)

Hey man, thanks a bunch! It was a fun one to do.
I think she was nominated in supporting category as this was a short film, and the festival had shorts and features...
Sadly, Jorge did not get nominated, and I don't know why, he was spot on and just a pro all around...
But, about your filmmaking talents. Wonderful! I love what you did. It looks so professional. (I know that is a stupid thing to say but it's true.)

Thanks again man!
The handheld stuff was all without a shoulder brace (that I used on Smuggler's Ransom) too! Which is still amazing to me, as I don't know how I could ever do handheld again with it (the shoulderbrace)... I shoot so much stuff handheld and have worked extremely hard to be steady with it... I guess it just takes a lot of practice.
Thanks for the comment on editing... That's where I started in this line of work, editing... It's still my favorite part of the process!
Yeah, Matt Derr (also scoring Smuggler's Ransom) is fantastic... Would you believe A Price Too High was only his second full score? Pretty great stuff!
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment dude! Problem is, you'll be expecting "Into the Darkness" to be just as epic and expansive... But, I only have one actor! lol...

09-21-2006, 10:21 PM
What kind of movie this?
It star that little kid?
He look like tastey apetizer to me ... in fact what kind of name Spurgeon Rice ... that sound like food too.
Is that evil soccer ball ... does evil soccer ball attack boy ? me hope so that kind of movie Scary Stuff! like. But people always mess up good movie like that when people still alive at end. Me no understand why unhappy endings with people still alive or get away like that. Alien great movie but better if Sigourney Weaver get eat at end. Then in sequals Alien eat someone else. That be much better.
Also better be warping in movie or Scary Stuff eat small Rice and Big rice.

I don't understand the star ratings. I see them at the top of the page and I've seen several thread with stars ratings. And I imagine that if people feel that your thread should stand out, they apply a star? right?
So, what's wrong with your thread having a star rating? Or is it that you don't like them in general? I noticed that msconce said the same thing.
And when you said that you have the most star ratings at 7, does that mean that 7 people gave you stars?

Ah Ted dude, I totally missed this Q... Sorry!
Anyway, the star ratings are on each thread... and someone always seems to throw a bad rating on my threads... (just mine...) all the time...
The reason I don't like them is because they give inaccurate signals as to which threads are more in-depth or interesting... I think they are dumb and we should just get rid of the star ratings....
And when I said I had 7 votes, I meant 7 people had voted a star rating on my thread... meaning it is a pretty popular thread... anyway, it doesn't really matter to me... I just hope people like the film! :)
Hope that answered the Q's and sorry for missing your post dude!

I completely disagree... Night is just an example of someone who's not a good actor. There are plenty of filmmakers who are great actors too... Clint Eastwood being just one of them.

Yeah, let me tell you it was tough... lost about a week and a half in post work progress... but it was a nice diversion and allowed me to look at SR again with fresh eyes this week, and let me tell ya, it was better than I'd remembered! (and that doesn't happen very often)

Woo Hoo. You know how much I think of your work, dude. I'll do a full review after I watch this a few more times. I hope you had a suitably great wrap party for your lil bro. He's got a great presence on screen.
More from me later today.

thank ya Mark! I look forward to it :) Me and my lil' bro's wrap party consisted of him being allowed to be with me while I was editing the film. He really dug it! :)

Well, I'll admit... when he's standing over my shoulder asking a zillion questions about what it is I'm editing, and why I put this there, or that there, it get's a bit much, so... I've kindly asked he not bother me while editing... hehe. But on this one, we worked on it together :)

Dude, great job. Even more impressive that you threw this together so quick. Loved the desaturated look, some shots almost looked black and white and your bro's shirt was in color. very cool.
What a great, little, location that added to the atmosphere very well. The score brought this up to the next level(great job, Herman). And what fluent, natural acting from your bro. He's a natural.
Loved the silouette shot of him in front of the brick wall.
Keep up the good work, B-man!

Brandon:
Firstly, I think your little bro' looked good on the screen. I don't know why, but I kept flashing back to River Phoenix in Stand By Me. He has a very natural presence.
The film, for me, was all right. I know you put this together quickly and I feel that what's there ain't bad for the amount of time that went into it as a whole. The sound was EXCELLENT. Sounds like a pro mix. If you guys mixed it yourself on the desktop, well, kudos to you, my friend. The music sounded like classic 80's tv, like I was watching Columbo or something. Not in a bad way, in a very good way.
Overall, the film was just ok for what it was. But there is definitely some very good craft there.

Hey Brandon! Nicely done! Pretty incredible what you can do in such short time.
I really liked the simplicity of your film. It says a lot without saying anything.
Great effects. Especially that opening title!
And the music is awesome!
Will be watching this again!

PS - I am glad that you clarified with Mark what that object was in the upper right hand corner in that one shot. Caught my eye, too and was wondering what that was! Thought it was you at first!

glad you guys liked it. Yeah, Spurgeon did a GREAT job. I did go simple Ted. I felt it a better idea than trying to do too much (as I did with my sci-fest entry last time out) Thanks for watching!

Hey Brandon, great little short. Simple and to the point. The only thing that bothered me was the music and that he looked around about one to many times when he steps into the shadows. Other than that, everything was clear story wise without any dialog. Congrats.

Thanks for watching Aram. I still gotta take a look at yours... tonight :)
Surprised you didn't like the music. That's one of my favorite parts of the film.
I understand what you're saying about him looking around. I cut it that way as I wanted to build the tension of the unknown before he made a move.
Thanks again for watching, and for the comments!

great effort in such little time, a true guerilla filmmaker.
VFX
Cool effect at the end, it got a little "sparkly" i guess you could say, but well done nonetheless.
Cinematography
Some great shots. there was a little too much difference in color saturation for me between the first shots and "darkness" but not enough to be distracting.
Editing
Solid. Doesn't draw attention to itself, which in a lot of shorts, it tends to do.
Sound
Give Herman the thumbs up for me.
Score
Ditto as Sound.
Screenplay
I think this is the area in which your "quick shoot" suffered the most, not enough development. Boy gets sucked into mysterious hole ... that's about it.
Acting
Your little bro gives one hell of a blank/concerned stare. Give him some lines next time and I'll be convinced.
Overall
Solid showing, you do alot more in 3 min than some can do in 6, I'd be proud of this little ditty, it's amazing what you can pull together in little time when you are surrounded by talented people.

What an awesome little movie. props to your brother! I enjoyed everything about it. From the colors, and lighting, to the Effect. It was well put together and leaves you wondering what the crap happened to him?? Good work!

THanks both for watching....
hybrid, on your note about the color saturation, I intentionally upped the saturation in the first part WAY UP! Like cranked that sucker. I wanted the HUGE contrast between the two places... I sort of did want it to be jolting.
Thanks for the notes, and detailed review, and for watching!

Acting: Little brother rock’s, keep it in the family!
Script: Creepy but a little sparse if I may say.
Direction: Nice shot choice. Wanted more action.
Music: Very funky.
Editing: Tight my man.
Lighting: My fav bit, love the saturated first shots and the muted later stuff, you getting ace at CC Brandon!
Loved: Titles, End F.X. shot.
Hated: No dialogue!
Overall: Brandon you’re really getting there, top notch for such a short shoot.
Brandon I look forward to your future work.
May I say thanks to HorrorFest, you and I hooked up a little and became mates.
Top job.

Review | POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT! I watch the movies first time around strictly for enjoyment, second and third for review.
At least one of us made it into the fest!!! GAHD! just kidding. Good one duuude.
Script - Was there a script? I can't even remember. So busy. But even if there was, it was probably more the skeletal structure.
Direction - One thing I do know is that you've got your own style. When dealing with kids, you pick shots that tend to amplify their youth. That might come from doing similar works for a living. One shot that I honestly thought as interesting was the brick wall shot. There's a this huge empty space behind it and your brother on the other side. I almost expected someone to leap over it and tackle him into two halves.
Acting - Your brother's first time out seemed fun. He's a little dirty... tell him to take more showers.
Cine/Lighting - Did you just use bounce on it? It all looked like natural light to me. Nothing to complain about. And I shouldn't be given it was shot on a day out.
Editing - Always top notch. I'll always say that this is your strongest point in anything you do. Again, it's probably because you spend your days cutting.
Sound - Herman did well. A different take on the soundtrack and though it's not my favorite, it's definitely interesting. It sounded a bit "boy in the jungle", which doubles for curiousity so it works.
Special Effects - I dunno what else you could've done in regards to a boy getting devoured by a black rock. I just hope I don't end up like that if a rock eats me.
Scariest Moments - That wall. You could almost re-shoot the entire thing in another day based on just that one shot. That was pretty neat.
Overall consensus - Looks like a Halloween PBS special, which means it worked on a lot of levels. It's not easy getting distinct qualities into a short. Glad ya made it B-Man. Now get back to work.
