I've got some footage that I shot on my HVX hand held (no choice tripods were band) so there is an element of hand-shake. The clips were shot in 720 25p/n.

Now I'm going to be using Apple Shake to (hopefully) get rid of all the hand induced shake.

My question is I'm delivering this footage as standard def so if the orginal was high def will I still get black boarders? if so is there an excepted way of masking/hiding it in the final sequence?
Cheers

Are you talking about the black borders on the to and bottom of the frame due to the 16:9 aspect ratio being displayed on a 4:3 screen?

Or do you mean the extra black edges of the frame that will be seen after you remove the camera shake? When Shake removes (I should say reduces) camera-shake, it is moving the frame itself around to appear steady. If the frame moves to the right, you'll have black appear on the left side of the screen.

If you are talking about the former, nothing you can do unless you crop the sides and only use the center of the HD picture, filling a 4:3 screen. If you're talking about the latter, you'll have to resort to hiding it in the Action Zone or extending the frame using cloning/painting tools in Shake.

Hope that helps.

When you use the stablizer node in Shake it will create the black edges around your frame. As was mentioned in the previous post, as it steadies the shot it moves the frame so it ends up creating the black edges. Where the edges will occur will depend on where the compensation needs to be applied.

If you are sure that you're only going to be finishing at SD though you have an advantage. Its pretty simple actually. Your HD frame size is what 960x720, but SD is 720x480. So..

Stablize at HD

Re-size to slightly bigger than SD
- you want it so that 720x480 is filled only w/ image, not black edges, so little guess/test needed here

Crop the edges to get a clean 720x480 SD frame

And voila, you can export now with a stabilzed shot without having lost much of anything (a few lines here and there might get nicked, but nothing significant). The only catch is if you want to ever apply the stabilizer and finish at HD, then you'll need to zoom in a bit so you can trim off the black edges. I'm sure the HD would hold up for that, but a digital/post zoom is well frankly only so good (for me anyway).

cheers.

Mnay thanks to both of you for the answers! Yes, alll I wanted to do was stabilize the handshake in the original HD 720 25p/n footage THEN reduce it to normal SD for showing on a standard telly!
