"RED: Digital Cinema" I really like the name, its fresh and bold. However, I am curious, where did the name come from. Every name has some explination behind it, what was the reasoning for naming it the company RED.

I guess "Red" is the name of Jim's second dog :-)

From the time Jim started posting about the camera back in December, he talked about starting a revolution. I think the point being made was that he intended to bring power to the proletariate that has always been held by the bourgeoisie. Ever see the movie "REDS"?
Red is also a signifier of power, regardless of any allusions to communism, and, given Jim's hands-on style, he likely saw the possibilities for industrial and graphic design possibilities.

The colour red is the most far reaching in the spectrum. Its historically been linked to power and chromalogically it connotes passion, fervidness and turmoil. Pretty much sums up the red journey thus far.
Red is the color of passion.

acehole111 is pretty close... add universally recognized, easy to remember and 1/5th (about) of the world population's favorite color (including me). Makes for a short email address. Did I miss anything? Probably. Oh, I like it.

The guy that owns www.blue.com figures he can sell it to American Express for a few million dollars. Maybe Jim thought that even if the camera buisness doesn't pan out he can still make millions just by sellin the red domain name. I don't believe that thought. I think he named the company after his second dog. Lucky for us, he didn't name his dog fluffy.

Whats wrong with fluffy? Did it ever occur to you someone here might have a dog named fluffy, and could take offense? (No, MY dog aint called fluffy! Heck, I dont even have a dog!)

Jim, would you mind telling us how much red.com cost you? Was red.com for sale when you first considered the name, or did you have to persuade the owner to sell it?

Well, one evening I was hanging out in this bar with Jim when he started telling me about this project called "Yellow With Blue Polka Dots and A Hint of Red at the Left".
I told him to maybe condense it into the name "Red".
I could tell he started thinking.......

Bit of a sensitive query no? If he did indeed buy it from an existing owner, I'd say expect 6 figures at least. You can count the number of 3 letter dictionary word .com domains on one hand (or a few).

I just hope there's no conflict with Red Microphones!
My first assotiation was the simple red light that's on when the cam is recording.
Maybe the fact that the start of visible electro-magnetic radiation is the colour of red.
And maybe it's just the nickname of someone special.
And guys,
Jim seems to be down to earth as much he can in this situation. I think questions & speculations like : "how much did you pay for this and that...." have no positive effect here and aren't relevant in any way. Fun is generally okay, but not when it can make a wrong impression.
Try to put yourself in the same position.

It doesn't hurt to ask. Blue.com sold for $500,000 in March this year, so you're probably right with the 6 figures.

Then again, Jim might not have purchased red.com at all. The owner is shown as Redcode, Inc, so it might be leased instead. Which is probably a good move considering what $500,000+ could be put towards instead :)
