View Full Version : Where can I buy a lens hood to flip image?

I want to buy the Brevis 35 adapter, but I don't like many of the methods used to flip the image. Someone recently suggested on this forum to use an LCD lens hood with a mirror at the bottom to flip the image. I really like this idea!

Question is, does anyone sell them or will I have to make my own? If the latter, is a simple lens hood available to buy anywhere (into which I would insert a mirror) ?

Nobody sells them that I know of. If you make your own, you will want to use front surface mirrors. Normal mirrors will cause ghosting which can be straining to look at and will make it impossible to maintain focus. Also, if I remember right, I had to use two mirrors to get the image in the correct position. It is hard to aim the LCD in the correct position before it reaches its rotation limit. I found the mirror trick to be a huge pain. The magnet trick works great for the 100 and 100A, and the HVX zip tie trick works for the 100B. I just use the HVX trick for my 100B. I keep track of the image on an external monitor most of the time anyway... an external monitor is pretty much necessary to maintain accurate focus. Especially if you are pulling focus in a shot.

When I made my mirrored hood, I used black foam core, a hot glue gun, adhesive velcro, and front surface mirrors form here:

I just found it to be too much of a pain and ending up using the HVX trick to flip the image.

What is the zip tie trick? Is this the dodgy paperclip thing?

If you're shooting with the HVX or GS400, I wouldn't hesitate to make the flip "mod" to the LCD. It's pretty much a tiny hole through a plastic bezel. If you follow the instructions online, it's pretty much risk free..and will make your shooting with an adapter super easy to transition to. The micro switch in there is a rocker, not a switch, so the risk of breaking it is near 0.

The only thing you should make sure of is that you used something soft, like soft plastic to insert into the hole.

I haven't heard of using a paper clip, but I assume it is the same. I would avoid using anything metal. I can't seem to find the HVX thread with the details, but this thread has some pics:

You can follow this. (http://www.cinevate.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=79) There's a small ribbon cable to the immediate left of the switch. This can be damaged if you don't use something soft. If you do damage it the ribbon cable, you'll just lose the LCD reverse function, your viewfinder will not come on if you close the LCD, and the LCD won't work if reversed and folded back to your camera. Don't ask how I know this :-)
