I have been shopping for a nice used super 16mm lens..and the thought occurred to me if RED would ever consider producing a new super 16mm lens for a 2k recording package. Looking at the price of their zoom, which I assume is S35 for 4k recording, perhaps a super 16mm could be produced to hit the 3,000 range making for an approximately 20,000 dollar 2k shooting package for those who can't quite afford the 27,500 4k package.
I know the RED team has waaay too much on the table to even consider it...perhaps down the road it could be a possibility.. or it may not even be worth the time develop a lens for 2k recording when they already have one for 4k.
just some thoughts.

Have you noticed the price of s16mm zoom lenses, they are expensive. About $6,000 TO $8,000 for a good qaulity s16mm zoom SECOND HAND.
For Red to produce a s16mm zoom lens at a similar quality to what their s35mm zoom would be surely the cost would be much more than $3,000.
I would buy one straight away if red produced it and sold it at $5,000 -$6,000 wide angle s16mm zoom. That would be brilliant.
That would certainly put red in the driving seat for a trully modular use camera, what do others think?
PS Red do have their hands busy for sure in fact they are possibly in a catch 22 situation with what should get included in the camera specs and what should be left out. The early adopters could loose out if red 2 follows red one in say a year later with a far better camera? What thanks for putting your faith in red. I don't see the founder wanting that to happen do you?
Either way i wish them well.

I would keep an eye out for used Zeiss lenses.
I bought a couple of Optar Illuminas a couple of years ago and in a way I am kind of glad, but.... obviously I am looking at 4k too. Especially considering I am going to be renting the camera out.
If you are looking at super 16mm zooms, you may as well just go 35mm. You can get used Cooke 20-100mm for around $5000.

There's a big size/weight (and sometimes speed) difference between almost all S16 zooms and a 35mm zoom. Also, if one is shooting 2K windowed, 20mm isn't very wide. I wouldn't want to lug around a 20-100 on my shoulder all day.
