I am impressed. The HDV can be edited so fluently with original m2t files now. Vegas 7 goes realtime even with fades between m2t files. Something that gave like 1 or 2 fps before with Vegas 6.

Definately it is a ENORMOUS improvement.

just tried vegas 7 with m2ts, very very fast/responsive indeed ! I was editing at half size (still pretty big), realtime transitions with basic effects (colour curves + black&white) never dropped a frame. system is an amd dual core 4200+, 2gb ram, 6x250gb raid0+1.

So does this mean you are editing in raw Mpeg-2 mode? Doesn't doing this has other adverse effects such as split frame cuts, etc? I thought this is what made using an intermediary codec such as ConnectHD so valueable. Are you essentially saying an 3rd party software like ConnectHD should no longer be necessary?

Basically, yeah ... I don't see why you'd need to proxy these.

Check the attached shot- I've pulled things onto one monitor to show an indicative grab ... m2ts dragged straight onto the timeline and faded, play back 25p solid (doesn't drop at all) ... This is Half full res. simple Levels on it ... cpu usage shows there's plenty of room left for basic grading work.

Not properly played with FULL res playback, but it looks like it'll playback realtime but won't fade realtime (no surprise).

Are you saying it can't play back full size in real time just fading from one clip to another? Just want to make that clear, because if that's true, it's still playing catch-up with, say, Canopus which had no trouble fading between tracks, with color corrections on each for me (on a dual-core P3.6)

Maybe the Connect-HD option will be required after all, I dunno. But since Vegas is now as cheap as $235 by doing the upgrade path, paying $200 for Connect-HD appears less a bargain. Still, it's at least usable whereas V6 wasn't.

Thanks for the info

I'll test this later, but it appeared to stutter at ~20-22fps through the cross-fades when I did a FULL res preview with Levels correction.... I can't fit 1920x1080 on my monitor mind, so its not easy to test. Also, I'd have to double check all settings, to make sure that it wasn't doing any unnecessary scaling.

But yes, that's what I was seeing last night- my project was 1080/25p, with half-res playback (960x540) straight from the m2ts .. it cross-faded / cut / colour-corrected at a perfectly solid 25p. Switching the same project to full 1920x1080 display played back 25p on straight clips but stuttered through cross-fades.

I'll check my settings and see if I can demonstrate full res playback and cross-fading or not, on my dual-core amd system.

Kris

[EDIT]
I should add, I had a lot of stuff running (firefox, photoshop, etc.)... anyway, will report back on whether I can get realtime 1080p colour-corrected cross-fades direct from the m2ts.

How does AVCHD perform? I'm eyeing the HF100 (it's really cheap now) but I edit with a single core 2.2Ghz Pentium M. How fast will it be on this system?

I have the HF100 and a 2.2GHz Dual Core2 Pentium and Sony Vegas 8.. Let's just say: it's a pain. But the camera is great, if I where you I'd wait for the HF11 that was just announced http://gizmodo.com/5027604/canon-updates-hd-palmcorders-with-hf11-hg21-versions :)

Hi,

For me that would depend upon where seunosewa lives and his/her needs/whats and timetable and budget.

The HF12 isn't available anywhere but Japan and then not until this Fall, and only promises to add 24Mbps compression and double the hard drive space on the hard drive of the HF10, neither of which would be mean too much to me.

I have the HF100 and really like it.

Highly recommend it.

On a quad core, Vegas 8 Pro edits it like butter.
