Here's a couple of super8 clips I shot in downtown SLC. It a test roll to see how my super8 camera was working:

The camera was a Canon 814 AZ. The filmstock was Velvia 50D from Spectra Film and Video (http://www.spectrafilmandvideo.com). For the transfer to DV I used photoplays (http://www.photoplays.ca/). It was really inexpensive. The transfer was a bit on the blue side and seems a bit darker than the original footage, but for the price I can't complain. I'll have to play with it a bit in After Effects. But all in all, I'm happy with the camera, the filmstock, and the transfer.

Could you share a bit more info in the telecine process? Are the files 23.976, or 29.97 with a pulldown? Just curious. I love the light leaks, I try to make those in After Effects, you get em for free. I'm off to Ebay to find an 8mm.

23.976. Here's the info here: http://photoplays.ca/post.html. Yeah I love those flashes. I'll probably use them as effects for other projects. Super8 rocks. I'm hoping to shoot a short film on super8 soon. Just trying to find the right story to do.

You gotta love super8. I've been planning to shoot some project on super8 for ages but it always ends up being to big, which implies more money. Here in Barcelona a 3 minutes reel of super 8 is like 25€ plus transffer to dv.

Looks good. I've just started with super8 myself and I too love the canon 814 electronic.

I am inspired MojoTrancer !
The footy is great. I just ordered a 50' Roll of the Velvia 50D (Reversal) for my old Chinon. Stay tuned !

Super 8 can be used very effectively in telling a story. Here is a link to a short (actually a feature development project) that used super 8 as its opening sequence. The transition from super 8 to the HDV footage is interesting as well, but I am no fan of the look of the HDV part.

The file is just under 92 MB, so you might want to save to your local machine as opposed to trying to stream it.

That was great.
I love the transition. The opening is almost surreal. Timeless. Reminds one of the nature of film. I'm thinking of using this for Horrorfest; transitions etc ...

Can't wait for your test John! We gotta keep this little corner of DVXuser alive

Darn it, I can't download the clip. Might be some shenanigans with my firewall at work. Have to wait till I get home.
I think what I love the most about super8 is the price to start out is so cheap. Cameras cost next to nothing and my light meter is a 20 year-old Sekonic. And all I have to do is put new film in and I'm up to date!

The timelessness of the open sequence is exactly what the director wanted to convey. This works extremely well for this story (not much of which is revealed in this short) and will be used throughout the full feature (combination of super 8 and 35 mm). The idea behind this project was as much a test of the look as it was a screen test of the two main characters.

film looks good.
could use a little sound editing...i know its still a rough cut. just a tad bit of advice.
and the look just falls off so much as soon as the hdv kicks in.
super 8 is so rad.

and the little girl is a very good actress.
Great stuff, super 8 works very well. The HDV part is very good too.
What super8 stock did you use? What HDV camera?
thanks

Hey MojoTrancer,
Sorry if I hijacked your thread, wasn't my intention. I will make this my final post and address a few questions, that were posed.
Ah, actually, this isn't my short, my daughter is the actress playing Charlotte (the older of the two sisters). This was shot as a feature development project / screen test. The script, titled "EzzyFish" is one of the best that I have read in years (and I read a lot of scripts as my daughter works a lot).
The sound is obviously, very rough, just a dialog track for right now. I don't know if they are going to go further on the sound design as this was only the development shoot and it will be re-shot once they get a green light on the project.
The HDV camera is the HVR-Z1U, the film stock was tungsten balanced Vision 2.
The thread is once again, yours.

No worries, Dude. I'll be posting some questions myself on your thread. It's a nice piece.
