Hey peeps, my father has been obsessing about photography for about 3 years and he said he's finally ready to get a camera. What would be the best Pro-Quality digital camera for around $500-$600? I don't want him to get a camera that looks big and pro but shoots like crap. Any suggestions?

The first thing to do is define the mission. What would he be photographing mostly - landscapes, portraits, action, close-ups, etc.?

I think mostly nature/people/birds etc...
I don't think he'll be using as an everyday cam.
you should look at the new Nikon D80. Very nice camera. $1,000.
Or get the Nikon D50. It is probably more in your price range.

yeah the nikon d50,d70,d80 are amazing cams for the money. i have a d70 and am totally happy with it in every way. im going to pick up a d80 soon. if hes going to be doing birds and nature and long lens would be a good investment. those do get very expensive tho.
