Fresh out of an upper class Malibu high school, three friends decide to take their yearly Halloween prank to the next level. So they decide to pull the "ultimate prank" on their ex-gym coach by telling him that his wife died on a plane trip to New York. Big mistake...
Here's where we're at so far:
9/9 - Had our casting session. We had about 30 people show up and had a few great actors from the group.
We had about 400 submit for the role in total. I had to reply to about 120 people and it was a bit overwhelming to answer all the emails!
UPDATE!!
Here are the actors that we've chosen...

We'll be filming Saturday, October 14th and 15th, for a two day shoot.
I realize that this won't make it into the contest, but we're still going to make this short! It will most likely turn out to be around 10 - 15 minutes long.
Crew:
Writer / Director: Tom Marshall (myself)
Director of Photography: Max (webdog)
Composer: James Wilson / Tom Marshall

were still working on securing a location... But we should have one my mon - tues and we need to get insurance and a film permit (we dont want to get shutdown)
So far we have a pretty big budget...
AS of today i have spent $300+ on stuff to build a dolly, and ordered a 7" LCD monitor, and building 2 LED light panels.
We may build a crane if time allows.
Im sure this budget will grow a lot by the time shooting is done.

Hey John,
Yeah, what webdog said (he's our DP)...
We were going to do the opening shot driving down the PCH highway, but I'm thinking it won't happen. It would be a sweet opening shot, but logistically, not very practical.
We're trying to find a nice house as a location, since it's supposed to be in Malibu. We had one place, but it kinda fell through. :(

Hey Tommy, let me know how those LED light panels work for you. If they are good, pass on some info of what works, what doesn't. I am not a fan of LED lights, but they do have their benefits and people seem to love them.
Good luck with all!

(He doesn't read this does he? Should I change my location in my avatar? Will he find me? Now I'm scared!)
Looking forward to the DIY post! I've looked at a lot of versions and have them bookmarked on my computer if you need any. I also built a small model out of wood to test a few things. Good luck!

Nice looking cast Tommy. Did you ever find someone to help you out w/ a location?

Tom Marshall
09-18-2006, 01:37 AM
Thanks Tim. We had a location set up, but it fell through, unfortunately. I had a couple people from here offer to help, but it didn't have the right feel. We're going to rent a cabin up at Big Bear for a couple of days though.

09-18-2006, 01:38 AM
Dude, the guy you got for Jack is David Light, right? He was originally going to be in Smuggler's, but some complications came up, and he couldn't make it. Man, the world is small.
Tom Marshall
09-18-2006, 01:39 AM
Yep, that's him. David Light... How did his audition go for you? I'm curious. He put on quite a show for us!
Brandon Rice
09-18-2006, 01:41 AM
He didn't actually make it to the audition. We were casting him for a non-speaking role, he had the perfect look for, but plans fell through, and we had to go another direction. He seemed great on the phone, and I am looking forward to seeing him in your film.
So, you're planning on shooting those dates for sure? I bet ya I could make it :) Just to come say howdy at least.
Tom Marshall
09-18-2006, 01:44 AM
That's too bad he didn't make it to the audition... I should play you his audition tape... that guy is intense!!
I've got all the cast lined up for those 2 days and I'll be calling Big Bear tomorrow to set up the filming location and permits.
I'd love to have you come by and give a hand or to visit and see David in action... :)

Looking forward to seeing your film Tom! and.. of course, i'm curious to see how your adventure fairs you for getting those permits. That was one of our recent roadblocks for our shoot forcing us to postpone from Mon/Tues shoot to shooting this weekend.
Auditions are great!! You so soo many people and you find potentials in everyone even if they are not right for your particular movie. Start building that database of interesting people and one day you'll have your movie all set and cast with minimal efforts. :)

I've been on the phone with Big Bear this morning and the lady just doesn't answer the phone...
I tried to be as professional as I possibly could during the audition and I think it went over well...
This thing is not going to be that easy to shoot because the acting has to be so believable and I'm just such a perfectionist, but we'll see... I think I'm going to wind up ticking off all the actors! But everytime I tell people that, they say no, it's good that I'm picky... :)

Awesome... thanks Ted!!
No problem. Looking forward to what you come up with! Let me know if a particular design is the shiz!
As for your actors... It's better that they learn now that they are nothing but walking, talking pieces of furniture! At least that's what I've discovered as an actor on a set.
The true stars of film are the crew!
Brandon Rice
09-18-2006, 02:38 PM
In one sense I agree... in another I completely disagree.... I'd be careful saying that about actors... as I've been in this industry I've gained a new respect for actors myself, and I highly respect their talent... I think it takes the complete package of a good crew and cast for a film.
TheatreGuy
09-18-2006, 02:47 PM
Hey Brandon, I am kidding. I am an actor. I love working on both stage and film. But on film the actor as got to be patient and know their place.
I am not saying that Tommy's actors don't, I was just foolin'.
And I just couldn't help saying that because I said it on a shoot one day after feeling like I was just set dressing with lines and the crew totally cracked up. And I was the lead of the movie!
Most filmmakers would be nowhere without actors. Actors are a true breed. To go out and bare ones inner self and do it over and over again take after take. It's not easy.
Just want to clarify that I do have a complete respect for actors.
I'll get off my soapbox now.
Brandon Rice
09-18-2006, 02:50 PM
Wow, I understand where you're coming from now... I apologize... I think (myself included) we can forget how valuable a good cast is, and get too caught up on the tech aspect... anyway, it's all good :)

No One gave a poo what you were doing with a camera. Hell, they all just wanted to be in it so they pretty much give you everything for free. Just seeing a movie actually being made is utterly fascinating to them.

Tom... Just got word finally back from the Ranger Service. For the permit, you can only have 10 people in your group and its $150 a day to shoot up there at 'big bear lake' legally. But, in order to secure our location, we needed that permit.

Yeah, I'm an actor as well. I've done a bit of stage work and I completely respect what they do... I'm just a perfectionist and want to get the best performance from the actors so that everyone looks good, cast and crew. It's a very collaborative effort. If the technical stuff is there and looks good, but the acting isn't very good, then what's the point? It's just a technical exercise at that point... I'm a director, so I really only want to concentrate on the performances and making everything as honest and believable as possible...
I'm old school, baby... Stanislavski, Chekhov, Adler, Meisner, all those guys...
I'm even considering giving acting lessons!

Who did you talk to? I was told to call Inland Empire Film Commision and get everything set up through them. I called this one lady and she's supposed to send some photos of different locations they have and prices on them. I'll try and nail something down through that and then get the permit...

We've moved the shoot to mid-October, so we won't make the contest... but it will be a post-Horrorfest movie... I just wish the deadline was further out for the entry. We plan to make some DVDs and hopefully try and enter a few festivals. One thing we've talked about is renting a theater with a digital projector one night and have a showing for friends and family. :)

So ya, If you talk to that lady again, try to finger a little bit more information from her and see what the deal is. The guy we are dealing with says it was the chodes before us who screwed everything up for everyone else. Maybe cause it was last minute notice or location? Hey Ted, yeah... we're giving ourselves an extra month... this way we can build a few things (like the crane I mentioned) as well as have a rehearsal session the weekend before the shoot... I want this thing to be the best it possibly can be, and a week to plan and execute the shoot is cutting it a bit too short. It's kind of a good thing that our location fell though!

I had an ex-roommate call me that and though it was cool...
So, still trying to get a location. The lady never emailed me back with any locations, so I don't know what's going on there...
I've got all the cast on board now and we're going to rehearse the Saturday before we shoot... so that gives me a few weeks to figure out how to actually direct a film... lol

Tom Marshall
10-04-2006, 10:44 PM
A couple of places. I put an ad on craigslist and myspace and got a few from that. But mainly, I listed the project in the Breakdown Services. I got about 400 replies from that alone.

what percentage of actors that you auditioned would you say were good?
Tom Marshall
10-05-2006, 12:05 AM
We had 31 people show up and maybe 5 - 10 were decent. I'm an actor myself, so I'm very picky. I wanted to do more casting, but it wasn't possible. I'm looking into shooting a feature, and I'm so freaking picky, it will probably take me 3 months to find the lead character...

a prank gone wrong is a great premise for a short!
saw one where a table of friends tricked an avid lottery player into believing he had won buy having the waiter pretend to read the numbers from a kitchen newspaper (numbers they had given him off the guys ticket)
the guy asks the waiter to repeat
then takes the keys from his pocket, puts them on the table next to his wife, and says "I've been having an affair for 6 months. You can have teh minivan and teh house. All i want is the Jag" and he walks out.
Clean settup with an unexpected punchline - great for a short.
anyway, looks like youa are on solid ground with the premise, and like I said, looking foreward to it.

OK, for the real film we're doing, here's an update...
Saturday, we're having about a 5 hour rehearsal for the shoot. Everyone except for one guy (contractual agreement he had previously agreed to) is going to show up so it should go well. There are a lot of physical action in the piece so it's imperative that it come out well and be believable...
I think I'm just waaaaaay too picky...
But Saturday, Oct 14th and 15th are the shoot dates and we have our location set up. I have to fill out all of the paper work for the insurance and the permit.
We still need to find a cinematographer (with lighting gear - we have the camera) and a really good audio guy/gal (also with gear, but not imperitive as we can rent a boom and a good mike), so if anyone is looking for something to do and really knows their stuff, let me know!!! :) And yes, I will pay you!

Actually, it wasn't meant to be a "fooled ya" entry at all. There was a naming mistake on the file. It was originally called "Maliboo BTS" :)
We're filming the actual short on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Thanks Kevin for the thread. Hopefully some people who'd like to crew this project will be interested.
It's turning out to be a higher budget (much higher!) than I had originally anticipated. We're going to be renting a Panasonic SDX900 for the shoot and with Kevin taking care of our cinematography, I know it's going to come out great!

We should have a lot of great BTS stills from this shoot as we'll have Blaine (one hell of a great resource on any set and a great guy to boot) taking care of that task, in addition to all the wonderful pre pro paperwork that he has come aboard to assist with.

Kidding, right? This was the entry? Hmmm, I’ll have to go back through the thread & see what happened … I’m guessing things fell through, perhaps just like what was played out on camera, and this was the explanation for everyone to watch & see why the film never entered.

Yes it was a total spoof done tongue in cheek. We shot the real thing this past weekend and it went fairly smoothly. The main thing, as khmuse said, was the weather on Friday. That and needing to round up some extras at the last minute.
I'm going to start a new thread under "User Films" when I get a chance to catch up on some lost sleep...

Maliboo was a great project to work on. Weather was an issue, but only really effected one shot Friday evening. We did encounter a number of challenges, including a rather hysterical event on Sunday evening where two of our principals ended up in the swimming pool during a take. I have yet to view it, but from what I was told the BTS footage rolling caught it all.
I think Blaine got a good bit of BTS shots, both still and motion, so there should be some really interesting things to supplement this project.
Despite being dead tired this morning (we didn't leave set until 3:45 AM) at a pre-pro meeting, I had a great time working with everyone on this film.

Which I am assuming was a good thing? If I remember correctly, the BTS camera was about 10 feet higher than the A camera, but about on the same shot line, so this will give us a clue as to what was actually captured. This scene will be a bit of an editing challenge for whomever Tom gets to take on that task.
My lighting setups on this and a lot of those scenes were pretty complicated so I wonder how much they show up on the BTS footage? It was nice to have a great camera op and gaffer on this project, made being the DP a bit easier.
Thanks guys for a fun project!

It truly was a great time working with everyone on this project. And Justin, no worries, my friend.
Yep, it will be a challenge piecing that scene together. I realized we actually missed a shot of Matt walking through the house and back to the pool. I don't know how critical that shot will be to the final cut though. I'm hoping it will cut ok.
Max did a great job as camera op. He really picked things up and came through for us. Everyone did a great job, really.
Thanks Kevin for stepping in on this project with such a short deadline. The production value really went through the roof once you jumped on board.
And a big thanks goes to Blaine too. I don't know what we would have done without your scheduling help and all the other help you gave us.
Thanks to David "ACDC" Chien for his great work with the script analysis and further breakdown and his boom op skills as well.
Thanks to Tim for doing grip. Without that, the project would have really dragged and we would have missed a lot of good shots.
I think this is something that will come out well and we can all enjoy sitting back and watching real soon!

Thanks to David "ACDC" Chien for his great work with the script analysis and further breakdown and his boom op skills as well.
I should clarify that Tom's use of the term "ACDC" is actually a kind of convergence term we threw out while on set, its a cross between AC (assistant camera) and AD (assistant director) and not a comment on any orientation!

I'm hoping to get the tapes transfered to hard drive soon so that I can go through the footage. We shot on a SDX900, so everything is on DVCPRO50 tapes right now and I don't have a deck - but that may soon be solved as Kevin knows someone who may transfer them for us.

Here is an image of a setup that took a while to execute. First off, its day for night, so that adds a bit of challenge. There was a hall way that we had to Duvateen off at the end as there was a large window very high (15' up) that we couldn't block. This setup utilized a total of 4 150W DedoLight heads (2 for keys/fill and 2 for hair lights). There was also an Arri 650 used for overall fill, another 650 used as a gag light for the bathroom interior. We used a pair of wall spreaders (you really should have seen the looks that I got when I said I wanted a pair of wall spreaders, I think that they thought it was a pornographic reference!) to get the lighting instruments into place in this narrow hallway.
The exterior window at the rear required 2 6' x 6' double nets and a 6' x 6' solid to simulate moon light. The nets were placed very close to the window with a bit of foliage in front to "sell" the look. The solid was used at a step angle to let only a bit of daylight bleed in to "sell" as moonlight.
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/106/1161288697.jpg
Here is a closer look at the DedoLight heads (my favorite instrument in tight spots by a mile) and one of the wall spreaders.

This setup was a last minute idea that I came up with that would cover a master shot and also reveal a new space in the location. This was a real pain in the rear as I had to do this one twice. The first time, we were to have 20 or so extras in a living room dancing. After spending a couple of hours to get it set up, we found out that we were not going to have our extras in time so that setup had to be struck. The idea that I had was to compress the size of the room so that our few extras could be made to look like they were in a smaller area than they were (the room was really large, over 30' x 40'). This setup has a lot of practical lights; many strings of little "pumpkin" and "skull" lights (they look low in this shot, but they look correct on the A camera) as well as a lamp in the shot as a motivated source (I used a PH-211 and a dimmer on this to set the ratio). The keys/fills were 150W DedoLights (I know, I sound like a broken record, but these things really are my favorite). There is also a Lowel Caselite 4 used but it isn't shown in this angle.
The dolly track angle allowed us to do an interesting move as I added a pan to the move to act as a pivot around 2 of the extras ending in a reveal of the new space in the background.
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/106/1161289992.jpg
This shot show a bit of the other room that was revealed at the end of the move. There were a lot of French Doors that had to be "Duvateened off". The key and fill for this second space was a CaseLite 4 and an Arri 650 Fresnel.

I can't take credit for the wall spreader, its a standard piece of grip equipment used on a lot of sets; but I agree, they are very cool.
I use wall spreaders all the time when trying to get a source overhead without any supports in the frame. I have hung some pretty good sized instruments (1k2s) off of these and if placed properly, they are very stable.
The one thing that I would mention, I always use a safety wire around the instrument and the 2x4. Having even a small source fall on your talent isn't gonna make any friends.

I built that dolly out of a few different pieces that I pulled off of things that I wasn't using any longer. Its a 12 wheel design on what was a pretty poor spreader/dolly to start with. I changed it over to a track design re-machined the poorly built pieces and added a number of nice bearings and proper hardware. The track is schedule 40 PVC with threaded pipe inserts so that the sections come apart easily. The lengths are different so that you can position the "seams" at different points and can accommodate a variety of run lengths. It runs pretty smooth, nearly as good as anything that I have used that costs many time more. The way that I configured it, it can handle some pretty heavy loads as the forces are maintained directly over the bearing races.
The best part, other than it not costing much over $350 to make is that it breaks down and fits in a couple of very small bags. Its much more portable than the doorway dolly that I used to use.
The sticks are a Cartoni with a Delta head.

I lensed a film about a year ago that was shot in a very old theater, built in 1923. It was originally a vaudevillian theater and was later converted to a motion picture theater. A really big place (over 900 seats), that had been abandon for almost 20 years before the community decided to restore it. It was built at the same time as the famous Egyptian Theater by the same construction company.
In one scene I ended up shooting some really high shots from the wire gallery (I think that is the correct term) about 60 feet above the stage. Hell of a scary experience and I used to rock climb so its not just a fear of heights. The stunt coordinator assured me that it was safe, the the amount of corrosion and decay up there didn't really reassure me all that much!
You theater guys are a special bread, much less oversight than the film industry (at least the union gigs) and much more "seat of the pants" approach to getting things done, becuase...

This is one of the simpler setups for this project. The scene is a long static three shot of the all the main characters where a lot of the back story is established. In this one, I didn't want to do anything too stylized as this wasn't meant to overpower the dialog.
The actor (David Lindsay) playing "Billy" can be seen sitting on the bed. Tim is facing the camera (gaffer / key grip), I have my eye on the EVF and Max, our camera op is frame right.
The lighting consisted of a practical with a PH-212 (small lamp on the table at the end of the bed) and simulated moonlight coming in through a set of blinds. Since this was actually shot at night, we didn't have to work too hard to block the window, just a 6' x 6' solid and an Arri 650 with full CTB. The key was a 16" China Ball with an ECA.
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/106/1161330821.jpg
Just a bit of black foil was needed to "sculpt" the output of the China Ball. What was really an issue in this location was the terrible slap echo that this room had. I used some furni pads on gobo arms to rig a bit of a baffle on two of the walls. It really helped to get the sound back in control.
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/106/1161330904.jpg
This isn't a screen cap, but rather a BTS still, so it doesn't really represent either the look or color of the A cam all that well, but it gives you an idea. In the A cam, the overall levels are lower and the CTB source coming in through the window is much more subtle.

That's what many of the houses are like up here. Very early century, 800+seats and just beautiful when restored. Get this... I would in this one house where the entire floor is hinged on the edge closest to the stage and the back edge ELEVATES to build a raked audience!!! It is amazing! I believe there were only 7 of them ever built and this is the last one and it still works! A little 4 HP engine spins these wheels with long leather belts and screw-turns that floor up to it's max. height. Takes about 45 minutes. It is wild. But the house can be used asa theatre with the floor in a rake position and as a dance floor or whatever with the floor lowered and seats removed. (They're bolted together in long rows, blah, blah, blah.) Thank goodness I am the designer, I really don't envy those guys moving all those seats!
But some very cool houses up here.
In one scene I ended up shooting some really high shots from the wire gallery (I think that is the correct term) about 60 feet above the stage. It's not called a "wire gallery" out here but I can see where it would get that name. Typically it is the grid (over head at the very top), the trim is the pipes in position and the fly loft is off to the side. But what the hell do I know, I didn't go to school!
Very brave of you. I have done so stupid sh*t and lived to tell about it. (whew!) That must have been a sweet shot!

Thanks a lot. Unfortunately, the theatre is a dying art. No. Not in huge market cities, but in many areas... theatre just doesn't have an audience. It is one of the reasons I am bowing out. That in the fact that I just can't stand to see all of my hard work as a designer end up dismantled and destroyed never to be seen again.
I have always love the film medium and hope that I can find a new home here to "perserve" my work from now on!

Wow Ted,
Those are some great stories. Being an engineer (EE) I am fascinated by a lot of the early mechanical solutions employed. The tilting floor design sounds amazing, I doubt you would ever get a planning department to sign off on something like that today, but here one is, how many years later, and still doing its job! Way cool.
The term "wire gallery" may have been specific to this theater as there was a lot of elements hung from the grid on wires. This place (Fox Fullerton Theatre) had so many uses over the years, they never seemed to strike anything, it just kept growing and growing. There were all these little birds (wooden carvings) that were wired up and looked like at one time that they could be made to fly around the stage area below.
This theater had been abandoned for over 20 years and had homeless living within, rain had begun to degrade the roof and the place was an absolute mess. There was some serious concern over the environmental hazards (the asbestos curtain was pretty sketchy) that bring in a film crew might encounter.
We shot there for 10 days, and the production values that the location brought were off the chart. You couldn't have made a place that looked this distressed with a million dollar budget.
Glad that you are liking my BTS lighting posts. You were so generous with your time and information on I.D. that I felt that I needed to reciprocate. Just wish that more of the other users would share their setups. I have learned more from being on a lot of sets than by any "classic" training. I have seen some pretty innovative solutions seemingly pulled out of thin air!
I will post a few more about "Maliboo" shortly.
Kevin

This is one of the simplest setups, the fourth in a five shot sequence that has one of the characters arriving at the location. Here you can see how small these DedoLights are. That is one pushed into the corner of the counter actings as fill / hair light for this actor. The key is a 4 bank Lowel Case Lite 4 using 3200k globes. I think that we used a 24" x 36" single and a solid to carve a few shadows on this setup (a week later and its already becoming a bit of a blur). The advantage of these two sources is that they are so quick to setup. This comes in very handy on these really fast moving shoots. There is so little time to cover the script that I really appreciate the flexibility that these instruments bring.
I really like the CaseLite for a number of reasons. Its light weight, the thermo formed case is its own housing, its a HF flicker free source and switchable between 1 to 4 globes. Being a large source, its pretty soft so you can get it in close and just switch up the level you need.
I own the CaseLite (around $1500) but the Dedos are rented items as they are VERY expensive (the 4 head kit is near $7000). I am always looking for Dedos in the used market, but I have yet to ever see them come up. I guess their owner's are just as fond of them as I am.

Yeah, she did have really nice ... "eyes"! When I get some screen caps, I will talk about the special lighting I used for her "eyes".
Sometimes a strategically placed hair light can accomplish so much more.
Did you really light her "eyes"? Wow... Nice... what else can I say?

I told you that you might want to watch the monitor on that take. Now you know why!

Well you did draw the short straw!
And besides, the actress sent in with you was pretty cute in her own right. :Drogar-Love(DBG):
OK, I should add that Blaine was opperating the bathroom light gag not just hanging out in the bathroom with a young actress.

Thanks Kyle,
I hope we got the effect we were going for in the last shot with David standing there with the knife. He was waiting in the shadows for Matt...

You color corrected this shot, yes? To look darker?
I mean, you didn't leave it all white and daytime looking, did you? It's cool if you did but I was just wondering.

Kyle, the shots you are seeing were done with a dslr. The purpose of the shot were to basically shot photos of the production, not necessarily give the atmosphere. The movie itself was shot much darker than what you see in these photos.
Not sure if the tapes from the SDX900 have been transferred yet. Until they are, y'all'll just have to wait on the screenshots...:)

I do need to move this thread over to User Films... I think it's about time it did. And screenshots will be done as soon as we get ahold of a deck to transfer the tapes to HDD.

That wasn't the actual shot. That was shot for the BTS stuff before we actually filmed it. Kevin shot a light off the wall to give him a nice shadowed look.

Nope, the tapes are still sitting at my house... those big speaker magnets make a nice tape stand... :cheesy:
