making laser blasts

Hey guys, how would I make a laser blast in the vein of star wars?

Use the lighting tool and straighten it out or actually paint my own laser?

Any suggestions or experience on the matter?

The Cycore Beam effect that come with AE should work well. Just animate it.

yup what jade said, or you can make your own mask set it up with some glow and animate it. But for basic lasers its much easier to use the beam effect.
