JUST ADDED! Dead Body photo!!!

Greetings Filmmakers and fellow Wannabes!

This thread could be titled, "The diary of making your first film" or better yet, "The ultimate how-to guide of how not to make your first film!"

Either way, I hope that this thread can offer entertainment, enlightenment and encouragement... not only for the guests who may read and post here, but for me as well! It is my hope that I not only make a film short that I will be proud to share but that I can learn from this experience.

With that in mind, I hope that you all feel free to leave feedback, advice and criticism. (And I welcome stupid questions... it helps me not to feel so stupid!

(I know, a very different approach than MOVIE MASTER but please don't be misled... I do intend to present a film that will hopefully give you the heeby-jeebies!)

FIRST DIARY ENTRY: 9-8-06

Dear Diary, I have posted my first design of the poster and banner for "ID." Fairly happy with it but want to find time to enhance the design.

Test footage has gone well. Learned a lot. Making wedding videos and taping events is a much different creature. There is so much more to think about with camera angles, wide or medium wide framing, etc.

Today, I started shooting "ID." I'd like to say that I have a scene in the can but I don't. I would but I have a cable running across the counter that I simply cannot allow. A bit of advice... next time hire an actor! Trying to do everything by myself is crazy! But having worked on film sets, as an actor, of many productions I know how much actors sit around. I don't want to do that to anyone as I go through these learning stages. I do have two actors who will have minimal screen time as well as two extras. Their shoots are scheduled for next week. (Let me be the guinea pig!)

As far as the script... I am very happy with it. I had a good day when I wrote it. The creative juices were really flowing. I have sweetened it up by adding blood where ever I could and have changed my ending. I feel that it is now more horrifying and I can't wait to see it other than in my mind.

One concern is the time limit. 6 minutes can seem like an eternity as well as just a brief moment. I edited the scene that I shot today, even with the cable running through it, to get an idea of the timing. It took 25 seconds! Yikes! Must trim!!!

Other than that, I feel really good about "ID." (We won't even talk about adding a score yet. When I think about it, I get freaked out with the amount of work I need to complete before I reach that stage!)

Well, I need to get back to shooting! I'll write back later. And I will post some pictures that I shot while on the set!

Until then - Ted

Entry 9-8-06 supplemental (I feel like a captain on the Enterprise!)

Shot some great footage today. Taking advantage of the full moon period. Very pleased.

Interior kitchen shot that had the cable running through it now has my wife's Pampered Chef catalogue teasing the corner! I have to check out this "over-scan" feature on the dvx100B. According to what I've read, you see the entire frame in the LCD screen. I am not so sure. I checked and double checked that counter top. But when I captured the footage, I found the teasing catalogue. I could live with it, but alas.... I was barefoot in the shot and I need to be wearing white socks! (continuity note! When I later shoot the scene when I step in a puddle of blood, the white socks will be much more effective than bare feet!)

UPDATE ON LCD SCREEN IN SQUEEZE MODE with the DVX100B... In squeeze mode, the LCD has a 10% underscan!!! VERY IMPORTANT info for 100b users since one of the improved features is the fact that the LCD now gives you the complete shot (overscan). BUT THAT IS ONLY IN 4:3 mode. NOT SQUEEZE.

Make a note of it... you'll be glad that you did!

Had some nice comments posted today. Well wishers and the like. I have to agree with desperatecomfort when he stated that these fest are a good motivation to shoot. It's what got me off my butt!

Will post pictures tomorrow. Too tired tonight. Lugged all my gear to a deserted, hillside cemetary and stayed to shot several moon shots.

Till Tomorrow - Ted

screen grabs...

and a picture of my "camera rig!"
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/13984/1157804580.jpg

The above 2 screen grabs are shot in sqeeze mode but when I pulled the clip from FCP, it doesn't seems to present them in their wide screen format. Maybe something that I have to do in FCP before clipping a grab or something that I have to do in photoshop. Either way, I'll work on that. If anyone knows an easy solution, besides shooting in 4:3 cropped (I've read Barry's "violet purple font!") let me know.

Well, I have to go to the racetrack and videotape a car race! Try to post more soon!

Until then - Ted

Entry 9-9-06 supplemental

Okay! I survived my shoot at the race track! Had fun doing it but really wanted to be shooting my film!!!

Anyway, I did want to take a moment and post a couple more stills. Nothing too exciting, but I can't give you blood everytime! Gotta save some surpises!!!

These next two are from the abandon hillside cemetary that I found while scouting for locations. The first shot is from the dvx100b scene file 6. The second is after I played with the settings.

Ted,

I love your diary and am really enjoying your sense of humor and attitude. I'm betting that you are going to be cooking up something pretty damn cool in that kitchen. Love the way you elevated your camera and the resulting shots are wonderful. You can really tell that you love what you're doing and that means everything. All the best to you.

Thanks Mark! I must admit that as I started this new thread with a diary approach (and all of that subsequent babbling), I thought long and hard before I hit the "Submit Reply" button! Just trying to offer something back to this incredible community on dvxuser.com... whether it be the old pro's reflecting on their own learning experiences or inspiration for other newbies.

And you are right.... I do love what I do!

Thanks again!

msconce, steve2bees and griffin... thanks for the comments on the rig. I thought some you may enjoy seeing that! (Believe me, that baby was secure! I really had to think about leaving my dvx up there like that without a second pair of hands on it!

No, that cool about your resourcefulness. I am always using something that wasn't designed to do a specific job and introducing it to a whole new life! The ladder rig looks like it could have benefited from a couple of 20 lb. bags, but otherwise, its a pretty reasonable solution to a problem.

Somehow, I think you must have a background that includes being a grip as this is very similar to things that I have seen done on set.

I once saw a grip use two apple boxes a ladder and high hat to rig a camera mount for a 35mm Pana. It took less than 2 minutes to come up with the solution and it was stable as could be. I was more than impressed and the support was ready long before the lighting was even close.

Post some more if you have the time. Good grabs and BTS info.

TheatreGuy

Thanks khmuse, I had some "sandbags" on the ready, but the thing wasn't going anywhere. Still, good advice because you never know what can happen. (I actually had to get my cat off the rig at one point! I guess he thought I built him a new toy!)

And I love the work that grips do. Amazing stuff. I enjoy watching them on a set.

As for my background, I am one of those tortured soles who loves doing everything. What do they say? "Jack of all trades, master of none?" Still it is fun and I find a way to support myself. That's what it is all about, isn't it?

Thanks for the comments. I will be posting more soon!

Yeah, animals and young children on set can make for some exciting times.

Grips, really good ones, are a joy to watch work, so innovative and yet under appreciated by many. They are great guys (mostly guys, but I have worked with a few gals in this department too) but just don't get in their way when its meal time, they will blow right through you!

Managing to feed ones self and still do what you love is certainly the way to live ones life in my book.

Looking forward to reading more about your project.

Agreed on all accounts!

Her name is Kelli Leigh-Ann Connors. A very good friend (and fiend in my movie!) as well as an incredible actor and singer! And she makes a mean Margarita!!!

I would love to share some more BTS photos but I am concerned about a device that I have engineered. It is quite practical. One of those DIY projects that took a turn for the better!

Kinda feel like I need to get some legal ownership status on it before I post pictures of it!

Stay tuned.... will bring more to the table soon!

Okay, I know what you are thinking. (well, I am sure there are a lot of things that you are thinking. But I'll tackle a few!)

First, "that is a heck of an expensive low profile tripod system." Yup! You're right. Thankfully, I didn't pay anywhere near the retail value for these (gotta love dvxuser marketplace!).

Secondly, "Is that a cheap-ass VidPro leatherette bag you have there?" Yup again! I did buy my dvx100b used on ebay, (please! I was VERY careful! p/u in person.... great price). The camera came with the original packaging AND that cheap bag. Works for now but I do want/need to upgrade that.

I am sure that there are other thoughts going through your head but I'll move on.

Moving on....

http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/13984/1158452637.jpg

Here is a little device that I use in my theatre design life. Homemade dimmer boxes for onstage practicals for the theatres with limited 2.4k dimmers. Seems to handle my 500W Altman Fresnels just fine.

Hmmm, makes me wonder even more what your background is....

Bates plug? hmmmm... not familiar with that term. I am a Fresnel with a male three pin stage plug, a female three pin stage plug on a pigtail with a male edison plug, in a homemade dimmer box.

Background is in... where there is a will, there is a way!

Okay, now for the exclusive grabs of an experiment gone wrong. PLEASE, do not try this at home! (The one thing that I recommend doing is quickly scrolling down this post.... you'll get a very crude look at how motion pictures got its' start!) BTW, this shot will not make my final cut. So, I am not breaking any rules!

That "three pin stage plug" is a Bates plug. These are used in both theatrical (film/TV) and stage (theater) applications and come in many different current ratings. One of the unique characteristics of these are that they carry both an AC and a DC rating. DC is often used to ensure a flicker free mains for hot lights on sound stages.

TheatreGuy
09-16-2006, 07:08 PM
Cool to know! Now that you say that, I believe it says "BATES" on the side of the plug. (doh!)

And that is interesting info on the AC/DC ratings. Never knew that.

I must admit, that have learned everyting I know by working and doing. I didn't have the opportunity to go to school... Mr. OJT!

Thanks for the info. Please continue to visit and enlighten me!

LMAO!!! That's funny.

Well, it only seems to make sense to shoot in my home if it is sutible. It works and I am close to home!!! Plus, I've got that barn full of tools, theatre props, and crap to pull off whatever I need! Obviously, you have seen my ladders come in handy more than once!

In the future, after making this first film, I will have a much better understanding of what I need (equipment-wise) and can pack my van accordingly!

A little bit here.... A little bit there.... A little bit in my head still...

It's coming along. I love my idea. Hopefully others will as well... A nice little psyco-thriller with horror elements.

Learning that matching shots (color-wise) is difficult. Shooting in one direction (into the shade) and then the other (into the light) is challanging.

I hope that I have time to explore with color correction!

Keep going Ted! And everyone else!

Hey Matt! Thanks for visiting! Yeah, you'll be glad you heard that squeeze tip once you start framing in the LCD thinking that the new overscan feature of the 100b shows you 100% of the footage caught to tape. uh-uh! Only in 4:3 will you have 100% framing.

And i imagine it won't take you a year to gain the know-how and confidence to participate in the short film fests here.

It's a great community here. Many people willing to share experiences and examples. Use the search engine on this site. It is amazing!

Feel free to drop me a private message if you have a question. I'll be happy to assist in any way I can. But, please note, I am a novice here as well.

(you may notice dark streaks here and there... that would be the falling blood droplets. Let me just say that in motion, it is pretty cool!)

I have pics of the BTS of shooting this but it contains an item that I am seeking a patent for and can't display this right now.

Let me just say it was a mess! I complete mess!

Okay.... I need to update my diary and I may get around to it before the end of Horrorfest. But if I don't get to it, I plan on starting a thread on a beginners guide to making a film!

Some of the highlights will be....

HIRE ACTORS... this seems a simple enough statement. But if you are a multi-talented, over-acheiver who thinks that you can do everything on you own... consider this. When making your first film, you have MANY things to think about! Direction, Cinematography, Lighting, Lighting, Lighting. And Wardrobe!

In my experience today, I shot several scenes today (yes, I am my own actor in my film) with a piece of GAFF TAPE on the back of my pants!!!!!!!!!

I was downloading my footage and I thought... what the (bleep) is that? Yep! gaff tape.

I have learned a lot during this experience. I wouldn't trade it for anything (well, yeah I would!) but this valuable experience has taught me a lot.

I will be posting more.... no, not necessarily for you old pro's out there. But for the newbies like me who think that we know what we are doing until we figure out that we don't.

Other chapters will include....

Lights, lights, lights...

Exposure... over, under, what the heck?

Color Correction... how do I do that?

White Balance? YES! Do IT!!!! Don't skip this step!!!!!!!!!

And many more (I'm sure!)

There are a lot of other new filmmakers out there like me and I hope that some of my information can reach them.

I will post here and perhaps in the the general forum.

If you are a newbie and have a question or concern... feel free to write me here in this thread or PM me. I will do my best to advice, assist or direct.

Believe me... this crap aint easy.

It's okay to think that you can do any and everything... but when you realize that you can't, I hope that I can offer some help!

(I don't mean to sound negative but I am the most self-assured, strong-minded, confident person I know and I am getting my butt kicked on this film! I am just trying to offer encouragement and assistance!)

Good luck and happy shooting!

Ted

Thanks Tommy. I may do that!

Dear Diary...

Well, yesterday was a real humbling experience for me as a filmmaker. I am discovering that I have a lot to learn. I mentioned some of the topics in post #97. There are plenty of areas that I need improvement on.

Let me first just say that I am glad that I decided to enter this festival and will submit my film no matter how it looks. The experience and the feedback cannot be replaced with just shooting footage around the house and looking at it later.

I really do plan on starting a thread about the learning pains of properly using the dvx and attempting filmmaking. I think that it will be insightful for many beginners.

In no way do I intend to proclaim that I have the answers, but I am sure that I can propose a lot of questions that beginners can relate to and comment on.

Perhaps, together in a forum, we can take some of the mystery out of this craft and produce some quality work.

In this festival, I relied on my creativity, energy and enthusiasm to make a film. Hopefully by the next festival, I can rely on knowledge and experience.

Rule number 1: That gaff tape was an artistic choice on the part fo the director. Say it. Stick by it, and never, ever admit that it wasn't. Just let them wonder what it could mean. And because they can't figure out what it means, they will assume you are some kind of genius. :)

Thanks, I needed that laugh!

I am thinking that the gaff tape will "stick around" in the final cut. At least it was black and I have on dark green Carhartt pants. Something to look for. Maybe I'll do a contest like Black Angel's. "Name the shot inwhich a piece of gaff tape was in frame." Better yet... "Name the shot that NO gaff tape was in the shot!"

You should see the walls and floor after shooting that!

I waited until my wife went to bed to shoot it so I could have it all cleaned up before she saw it!

I gave her some lame excuse about having to shoot it at night because of the lighting.... but as you can oblivously see, daytime light would not make a bit of difference!

Thanks for all the great comments in my thread and elsewhere on the forum. It looks like you're having a lot of fun working on your movie. Will you be posting any more stills before the movie itself comes up? I'd be excited to see them.

Did you figure out the fiona apple reference yet? That video was what Joe (my DP) was thinking of when he shot my movie, I think. You can probably download the music video on youtube or something.

TheatreGuy
09-20-2006, 09:41 AM
Thanks Lingothree for visiting and your comments.

I am having fun. A little frustrating at times but fun, none the less.

I would like to post more stills. A lot of what I've shot over the past couple of days (besides the bleeding ceiling) are boring in themselves. When put in context, they are necessary and work but out of context.... boring. Like a door shot or a phone shot.

I will be shooting more basement scenes and expect to be able to post stills from that.

And NO! I haven't been able to put together the Fiona Apple reference yet! I've looked at a few of her videos but not the one that compares to my lighting!

Do you know the title of that video?

Thanks again!

I am REALLY looking forward to seeing all of the films in this fest. I am popping corn right now to have enough for all of these flicks!

I think it is called Criminal...? The one that goes "I've been a bad, bad girl..." and she is writhing around in her skivvies with a bunch of other half naked waifs.

Basically it looks like low budget 70s porn or something. If I remember correctly, it's shot with really directional lighting coming from the camera, like a spotlight. Maybe conrad_johnson can elaborate since I think he said it was the look he was going for when shooting my movie. It's a pretty cool look. So I don't mean to disparage it by saying it looks like "low budget 70s porn."

I even use them for reaching high places occasionally! :)

But it is funny.... I was about to go spend money on 2" black pipe, flanges and connectors and make a few lighting trees. Then I realized that I could save $40-50 and use some scrap lumber at my house. (I am a scenic designer/carpenter as well and have tons of debris in my barn!)

I started to build a few trees out of 2x4's when I saw my ladders hanging. I thought, hmmmmm..... stable with plenty of levels to place lights. Plus, very portable!

Yes, they've come in handy. And they were not an additional expense.

Thanks for visiting!

HAHAHA! That's good. I like football, too. Even weirder.

Once, when this show closed that I was performing in, the cast all wanted to get together on a Sunday to have a cast party. I said that I couldn't because of my football viewing schedule. They all looked at me like I had three heads!

Hey TheatreGuy...nice bloody ceiling. You look like you're making great progress. Good luck man.
Thanks apollyon! Yeah... pretty cool shot.

Kind of a funny story here. A little behind the scenes BTS.

I installed a bathroom on the second floor of my house about 4 years ago. Then, about a month ago, my wife had a, um... "clogging incident" and came running downstairs to tell me the entire upstairs bathroom was flooded with water!

I ran up, saw the pool, went downstairs to my dining room (which is under the bathroom) and saw the ceiling bulging from water!

I thought, FREAKIN' A! I am going to lose part of my ceiling!!!

I grabbed my drill gun and a ladder (surprised?) and got up to the ceiling and began drilling holes for the water to escape. (I thought that if this worked, I would only have to putty up the little holes and repaint than have to replace a large section of my ceiling) Sure enough, the water found it's way through the many little holes and my ceiling was saved.

Well, I have yet to get around to patching and painting and when I was finding ways to add "blood elements" to my film, I thought... "Hey!" I have to fix this part of the ceiling anyways, why not create a pool of blood and shoot it!

Voila!

(I don't know how funny that actually is, but let it be a lesson to you if you ever find your ceiling bulging with water!) :)

Jaime V
09-21-2006, 01:25 PM
lol...the drilling holes is a nice tip. I like you, you make the most of whatever you have at hand. I have a feeling if we were in the middle of a nuclear winter, you'd find a way to use radioactive people to film in the dark, since they glow so nicely :-)

LMAO!!! That's great!

Yeah, I like to consider myself a resourceful guy. Whether or not I am a filmmaker will be yet to be determined!

Thanks apollyon!

Oh! And if I have a ladder handy, we can hang them from it and create some nice overhead lighting!!!

Thursday evening, signing off.

Breif note, I have edited 4 minutes of my film together and am VERY HAPPY considering some of my earlier comments. (CC, White Balance, etc.)

I.D. is looking pretty good right now, and if I can just squeeze the next 3 hours of footage (kidding) into the 2 remaining minutes, I'll be sitting pretty.

I will try to post some more BTS and grabs tomorrow.

MAJOR NEWS UPDATE......

Well, yesterday was a very good day. And last night I was able to finally go to bed without playing the movie over and over in my head.

That is because, I was able to watch the movie on my editing screen!!!!

I only have 4 minutes done, but the next 2 min. will fall into place very nicely.

It is just so reassuring to know that my crazy idea is going to work. And that maybe, perhaps you can write, shoot and act in your own movies as well as fill all of the other duties! (Though, I highly do not recommends this!)

I am just very pleased. I honestly thougth 2 days ago that I had bitten off more than I could chew. I still think that my film could benefit in many ways, but at least I feel that I won't be embarrassed of my entry.

I am really liking it. A lot. :love4:

And my wife, who of course "has" to like everything that I do, LOVES the film thus far. She couldn't stop watching it last night.

So, things are looking good. Very excited to get to work today and finish this puppy up!

I'll do my best to post those pics and bts soon..... :) :) :)

Cheers All - I hope that everyone's day is starting off as positive as mine!

Yeah, it's funny. The 3rd time of letting my wife watch it, I pointed out things that she never saw. Then that's ALL she could see when she viewed it again!

I am wondering if I should re-shoot some stuff  or let it ride.

Keep wondering how much work it would take to photoshop some stuff. Is that crazy or do people do it all the time?

Mark Harris

People do it ALLLLLLL the time. Even at the highest levels of Hollywood.

You going to post some more grabs?

VersuS

I think re-shooting has to do with how much time you have left when working on a deadline, but most importantly, it has to do with how good your project you want to be. OK OK we want it to look as good as possible, but that's exactly what I mean, if you feel that re-shooting will help HUGE and that you really can pull what you have in mind, then go for it (as long as you dont fall way behind schedule - unless you dont care about competing but just getting the best darn job you can).
It's ok to want to do more and be a perfectionist, just as long as you can really be perfect, if you know what I mean. It's easy to learn about pointing out your faults and say 'oh, I could go this way on this scene, and add this thingy right there and do this in post...' but the reality check must come along and you should tell yourself 'can I DO all these things right now, or do I need to read more, buy more and experiment ?'. Working on a project with a deadline doesnt give you always the luxury to experiment and learn as much as you want to. You learn along the way but you just put in good use what you already know. I can't learn how to use After Effects right now, but I'll try to do so when this thing is over so when the next project comes along I'll be like 'okay we'll do this at this scene coz I KNOW how to add that effect in post' and not do wishful thinking...

Ok I hope you understood most of my thoughts, I sometimes get the feeling that I write too much and become difficult to follow....being a gemini is a blessing only for myself...the rest try to keep up with my split personality....

Yeah... more grabs tonight! I have just storyboarded my last scene and am on my way to the basement to shoot it. (hee hee hee... love the basement!)

Found a good tool for making quick and easy storyboard rectangles... a cassette case! (You know, "cassettes," those little plastic reel-to-reel things that replaced the 8-track. oh! Dating myself!)

Anyway, they have a similiar proportion to 16:9. Very handy.

And thanks for the input about photoshopping. What do you do? Take each frame of a sequence and alter it then import them back into the NLE? I would love to know.

Thanks DC!

Good words, John.

Yeah, I am a perfectionist which has always been a blessing and a curse. The curse is obvious.... I am always spending WAY TOO MUCH TIME on things. The blessing is what keeps me employed! :)

I have SO MUCH repeat business and word of mouth business because of my work ethics and attention to detail.

Good words, though. I really am looking forward to my next (and 2nd) film project. I can't wait to employ everything that I've learned on this shoot!

Thanks John!

The most important thing I've learned and will definitely put in use for my next project is that you can never do enough planning for your project. I promised myself that for the next project I will plan EVERYTHING. And I saw this when we shot some scenes that we had discussed thoroughly and in editing they came out pretty strong, but we had some scenes that were not worked enough so we shot them very quickly and then the footage was quite poor. I also got frustrated by the fact that we were talking about doing things and using stuff that we never used...and that was partly because during shooting we just forgot about them as we were really stressed and trying to cope with lots of setbacks....
Anyway, as I said, planning is A and technique is Z. You cant go from Z to A but you can go from A to Z.....

Depending on what you need to do, NO, I do not use Photoshop, per say, though some people have been known to do that. I use the tools in Vegas and AE. What kind of stuff do you need to fix?

TheatreGuy
09-22-2006, 06:30 AM
Well... it is really one scene that bothers me. (and again, my wife didn't even notice it.)

But, I have this scene that I had to shoot twice. The first time, the scene is perfect except that I have a mini-dv camera and cables sitting on my counter! (This is when I learned that the dvx100b does NOT display 100% of the framing when in squeeze mode.)

The second time I shot it, I had taken my sock off and you can see my feet. Not a biggie except that in the following scene there is a close-up of my socked foot!

So, in the scene w/o socks, my feet are visible for a couple of frames as I run to the sink. Once I'm at the sink, no feet are in the shot.

I have thought about cutting an insert to cover my running to the sink, but I really like how it unviels the scene.

I have thought about enlarging the clip to crop either my feet or the camera on the counter, out. (But I am worried about the rez. factor)

I have thought about photoshopping the camera out of the scene.

I have thought about photoshopping socks on my feet! (bad idea I am sure)

That's where I am with this.

I should either let it go or reshoot, but it was quite a set up. (that's when I stuck my camera and tripod on a ladder.)

Thanks DC. I appreciate your time and feedback.

otherwise leave it be....i dont think people will be thrown off course when watching your film due to a sockless foot....maybe people wouldnt even notice if it werent for your big mouth ;-) (smilies see --> :):):):) )

Are you serious? I thought the DVX100b was supposed to frame properly in squeeze: http://www.dvxuser.com/articles/100b/

"In squeeze mode, the LCD now shows proper framing"

In regards to your question, I would try cropping out your foot and camera, and see how it looks before redoing the scene. But you have a week still, so even if you had to reshoot that scene you should have time; it didn't sound like a long complicated scene.

Good luck!

Mark Harris
09-22-2006, 07:13 AM
Yeah, you can get away with a certain amount of zooming in digitally before you lose resolution. But honestly, from some of the things you describe, it might just be faster to re-shoot, if you're really not happy. If you are not experienced with those programs or with post in general, it might just take a lot longer than a reshoot.

Hey apollyon. Thanks for the words. It isn't a complicated scene.... just don't want to have to create that rig for my camera again. (photo of LadderCam on first page of thread) I would probably never match the framing. But thanks. I am going to take a look at cropping. Maybe re-shooting.

As for the squeeze mode on the LCD of the 100B. Yes. It does show proper aspect ration BUT there is an underscan of 10%! (10% of what you see is NOT on the LCD.) This is a contridiction of the the advertised feature that the 100B now gives you overscan on the LCD. (In 4:3 mode, EVERYTHING you see on the LCD is on the tape.)

I started a thread about it....

It is also covered on the first page of this thread in bold highlights in the middle of my text section.

I guess this would explain why I had issues like yours...stuff like mics from a boom in the shot when I thought they weren't. I just thought I didn't see it due to the OSD on the LCD or something.

Try the crop first to see if it's good or not, it's easy enough to do, and if you don't like it, then you can reshoot. Good luck man.

Hey Theatre Guy, It's me the awful master of C2TC Productions (seems that the more I post, the more maniac I become :Drogar-Love(DBG):)...

Checked out the whole thread about "I.D.". Got to say you are doing a great job!

I got really impressed with the ladder idea and since I always wanted to be some sort of 'Bob the Builder' you gave some some good ideas. I suggest that after Horrorfest we should exchange some ideas in the D.I.Y. session....

Another thing that was really impressive is the blood on the ceiling, I mean... WOW  Very good job mate! ...oh yes and the porn collection is an essential part !

As for reshooting and planning, I 'll stick to John's words and add that is extremely difficult to have one person think about almost... everything (that's John in our case). I think that we will discuss these things before our next project so to be as ready as possible...

Things are moving along.......

A couple of re-shoots fixed my continuity issues. (I LOVE the new shots BTW! Beautiful compositions!!! :) )

A couple of re-shoots fixed my storyline. (Having to act as the ACTOR as well as every other aspect of this production, I forgot to actually "ACT" in a couple of my shots! seriously. Missed the boat on that!)

A session of showing the work in progress to a dear friend is going to earn her an Associate Editor credit. (THANK YOU ALLEGRA!!!! :love4: )

AND, I pulled off the MOTHER LOAD.... I did my own RACK FOCUS while acting in the scene! Yep. Crazy!

I am going back to work on I.D. and will check in later!

Thank you all for the kind words and concern about my whereabouts! :dankk2:

I miss you all, man!

Can't wait to get this done, submitted and back on the boards!

Ted -

As much as I miss your lengthy posts, I'm glad to see you are busy working on your project. Just because I haven't posted in a few days (except for the post above because I hit the wrong KEY - Duh!), I have been checking your *rants & raves* and cheering you on from a distance.

Keep going man, and I think I can speak for a lot of people when I say we're looking forward to your picture when it's done.

I'll be checking back soon, after I celebrate my *1 week* anniversary with my DVX100B!

Cheers -

Hey B-Man! I miss chatting with you as well. Gotta wrap this up so I can hang online!

Did you get all of your vfx and score done? I could check your thread but no time right now!

Back to the basement to grab a shot that didn't quite match like I wanted it to!

And thanks for the words, man. I hope that people enjoy it. I am pretty proud considering that this is my first film and I've done this entirely on my own except for the one day with my guest actor! (You should see the hours of raw footage I have. It's ridiculous!!! And every shot starts and ends with me leaving the record button. NEVER AGAIN!!!) :)

UPDATE....

Okay, okay.... movie is moving along very nicely. I actually got to buy food and beer for a friend that helped me out!!! (YES!)

Try as I might, I just couldn't be in front of the camera and behind the mysterious door that pounds and rattles (and shimmies and shakes) all by itself! Uh! Did I just give away my plot??? Damn. :)

It was awesome having someone else to work with. Just listening to the dailies is fun because it was the first time that there is any conversations between takes (unless I was talking with myself, and that does happen!)

Anyway, I have some more GREAT LADDER RIGS to share. I will have to do that tomorrow when I get back from one of my REAL JOBS. (I actually get stage manage the NH Symphony Orchestra, so 8 times a year I get some nice music and a beefy pay check!)

Will post more tomorrow!

Wow! What a nightmare trying to compress this sucker! I nearly lost it... okay, okay. I DID lose it.

But, dvxusers came to the rescue and it looks like I should have my first film in the fest!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a bit concerned however... my film looks SO MUCH BETTER uncompressed! And BIGGER than the 400x225 size requirement.

Oh well... at least I was able to get off my butt and do it.

I hope that people will watch it again on the dvd... the quality should be so much better.

And a word of advice, which I am sure goes for just about everyone....

USE GOOD SPEAKERS OR HEADPHONES when watching these films!!!!

The cheap-o speakers on my laptop do nothing for the sound that a good pair of headphones do.

I know that I will be watching everyones films with headphones on.

Hello All!

Okay, so we are just waiting to see I.D. appear on Jarred's list.

In the meantime, I am restoring my house from a movie set into a home. My wife has put up with blacked out windows and gear all over the house! I even had to remove a counter that sits next to our stove, just so I could get a shot that I wanted!!! (besides, I built and installed the counters so it wasn't too much trouble. Just funny to have part of our kitchen torn apart!

I've had a great experience with my venture into filmmaking. What a blast.

I can't wait to make another one!

Thank you to the many people who visited and commented on my thread. Your words meant a lot.

I hope that you enjoy my film short!

I am with Plissken on this one, I believe that one-man shows in here (or projects that involved very few people like Brandon!!) deserve a lot of our respect. Not to put down other projects! Don't take it the wrong way. But I think that the dedication that one or two people show in order to pull through this ordeal is amazing. Speaking for my 2 projects, if anything good is said about The Door Between I am going to consider this a direct approval of my brother's work. He is a professional musician and sound engineer and his work is on the line (let's say) and I respect enormously the fact that he doesnt care about putting his work in view on a project of mine even though he knows that I am not a very good film make (so far) and that his work might get lost behind crappy directing, acting and lights. So I guess it's amazing to see and know that some people have worked beyond their egos and beyond their capabilities just to help or be a part of this CELEBRATION.

Again I think I've written a post that is more poetic than it should be. Maybe I should focus on writting rather than making films..loool....

John, you and I are both guilty of long, poetic posts! HA HA.

I am looking forward to both of your films. It will be very cool to see the final product after all of the chats and shared info.

Thanks for the very kind words.

I tell you, I really did have a blast making this film. I look back to the last 4 weeks and think of all of the work that I did, all of the figuring-out of stuff, how to pull certain things off and such and I am really proud of what I did.

I have showed my film to a couple of friends for feedback and they were just astounded that there was no crew involved in this film. They were floored and asked how I did it.

Then I would show them a couple of minutes of raw footage and they got a kick out of watching me "set" myself in the frame, practice my movement while looking into the LCD and then settle and call action!

It really is funny. One reason why I have SO MUCH raw footage!!!

This is what happened when I filmed Love is.... I was just placing the camera here and there, trying to get a perfect frame....going back and forth....to be honest it was fun doing this by my self coz I m not really good at directing others...I always tend to have a very clear picture in my head of what I want a scene to look like, I believe that I am very good at that, but I cant get my vision across....:(

Man, I have to tell you...

That was some freaky sh*t!

I had to park my van on the side of the road, haul the body and gear up to the cemetary, shoot (over and over... by myself in the quiet location) and haul it all back down the hill.

I was so nervous that a car would pass and see me carrying this body in and out of the cemetary. (I had to do it 3 different times! The light wasn't right the first 2 times!)

Also, while I was up there at that cemetary, I did "time lapse" footage of the full moon we had last month. Talk about scary!

Alone in this field, next to a cemetary, in the dark, with my dead body!!!

CREEPY!!!! :zombie_smiley:

I feel very good about directing others BUT the reason I did this project on my own was that I KNEW that I was going to spend HOURS figuring out framing and such (having never made a film before!).

Os stage, the framing is set. With film, the world is your oyster! And I knew that I would try every angle and framing before I was satisfied.
