DVXUser Photography Challenge: Round Five
Why?
Why is a filmmaking community doing something with photography? Simple... With photography you learn about lighting, composition, framing, blocking, and it is fun. Ask any of the 30 people who submitted for the first round to raise money for charity as well as participate in a community event and they will tell you, it was fun, plus:
It is very simple
The Rules:
*Take a picture, in the time period, that fits within the topic of the week on any camera with any lens that you want (D-SLR, Film, DVX, XL1, Cellphone)
*Post process the image in any way that you choose and see fit.
*Please do not post any images that are larger than 8" x 10" at 72DPI
*Email the image to DVXUser@stffilms.com along with any comments regarding the image
*Vote and comment on the images submitted
*The winner will choose the topic for next weeks photography contest.
Simple, right? Maybe too simple... So what's the catch? There is no catch! No cost. No one profiting. No one stealing your images and claiming them as their own. Nothing...
PRIZE:
*The winner chooses next weeks topic (example: landscape, macro, or anything) & if we exceed 50 entries I will make a $50 donation to Isara.com. If we exceed 250 entries, I will donate $250 to Isara.com which is an associates degree in Thailand (according to PK). Your participation can help give the gift of education. PLUS as added motivation, weekly participant and resident, well he lives here, Brandon Rice (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/member.php?u=6061) has offered to donate a copy of his film A Price Too High (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=57245) to the winner if we exceed 50 entries... Do you really need more motivation than that? Thanks Brandon!
This week's topic: Oooh, Ahhh, or Mmmm! chosen by Week 3's winner Jeremy Ordan (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/member.php?u=7852)
Details: submit an image titled either: 'Oooh' 'Ahhh' or 'Mmmm'
Due Date: September 13th @ 11:59 EST
Voting Period: September 14 - September 17th @ 11:59 EST
Next Topic Posting on: September 13th (by winner of Round 4 - City Life (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=69441))
Good luck everyone and I can't wait to see what you submit!
-Jeremy

You can pull something from a video as long as:
1. The video was shot during the week that the contest was announced
2. It is your video
Horse won and he used a DVX to shoot it with... It's a lot of fun, and the voting is really simple... You go to the voting, click a score and comment... how is that complicated?
Brandon Rice
09-07-2006, 10:06 PM
Yep. That's it. Thanks for the clarification there Jeremy. I've used my DVX for the first round. And my crummy coolshot Nikon for the last three rounds. I have learned a lot about composition and stuff though, it's been great!

Ok, back on topic, ill have to do something with my HVX then, sometimes i wish it had some of those consumer level features like the ability to take 5.0mp stills to the SD card or something. oh well. It just sucks that i have to set something up, i like capturing life as it happens with cameras.

Dude, a still frame from the HVX in progressive mode will compete with any high level digital camera, and still provide the opportunity for editing.
Plus, look at it this way... My digital SLR can't take 24 unique frames in a second (hell, I would have to drop $5000 just to get to 5 frames a second)

$1699 will get you 5 frames/second.
I cancelled my D80 order so I can get that D200...
I forgot that it offers the 5FPS... I really want full frame, imagine my 10mm Sigma (I'm ordering it next month) in full frame, a true 10mm not a 15mm.
I feel like I'm talking about a Playboy centerfold... When Nikon finally releases a full frame camera we're talking at least $4000... and that's way out of my price range. The D200 it is... in three months.

I want a D50 :( been posted in the market place for a while that i WTB, but it must be a decent cam if no one is selling
I keep debating on whether I am selling mine when I get the 200 or whether I am going to keep it and just use it as a secondary camera so I don't need to change lenses all the time
It's a great camera and Overstock.com had the refurbished ones for like $450 a month or three ago...
I'm a big Nikon fan although with Canon you can get more MP's and glass per dollar, but I still prefer Nikon (this is not going to turn into a Canon/Nikon thread).
Ultimately, and for as much as I dislike him, Ken Rockwell makes a great point, the camera doesn't matter, it is the shooter. I say it's not the arrows its the indian... but a great example is look at some of Joey Lawrences stuff... all on a cheap point and shoot camera. On the other end, look at Scharky or Kprince's stuff, both using D-SLR's and both have an amazing eye and with good gear and glass they come up with amazing images. Is one better than the other because of the gear? I think that all three of these people I named are amazing artists and could create an amazing photograph with a disposible kodak, they just use tools to aid them in getting the job done rather than allowing their tools to limit them.
I want the D200 but there are certain things with the camera that could limit me because I'm not there yet... I hope to grow into it though :)
That being said, I really believe, and I think we should make this a one off contest, that we should do a cell phone camera contest, just to see how tools can hold us back rather than allowing us to move forward.
Too many words for this late at night.
Brandon Rice
09-08-2006, 12:26 AM
Jeremy, if you think about sellin' your D50... hit me up... I've wanted one for so long!
Jeremy Ordan
09-08-2006, 12:34 AM
I keep going back and forth on it... If I decide to sell it you will be the first I tell, but I just need to officially say, "I'm ordering the D200 today" and then I can decide what to do with the D50. It's an amazing camera though
Cynic821
09-08-2006, 01:13 AM
well if brandon doesnt have the money when you are ready, ill buy it immediatly, its 20% for me and 80% for my girlfriend. shes wanted a REAL camera for so long , and i told her id get her a d50, she likes it and i especially need use of a still camera now that the digicam thing has been stolen/lost/stolen most likely. I half promised one for her birfday, but it never came through, because 699 new is just way too much, i dont care if its beat to crap , tagged on and thrown around , just as long as it works and comes with that lens its supposed to have, ill buy it. shes still waiting.

Second, to everyone, does that... ohh, ahhh, mmm, could be a landscape since this theme is very open?

First, have you used a Canon? why are you sticking with Nikon if you sell it??
I have tried the Canon's and even the full frame 5D doesn't feel right, I prefer the Nikon image, and I have so much already invested in Nikon glass that I'm never changing :) Let's end the Canon/Nikon talk for this thread...
Second, to everyone, does that... ohh, ahhh, mmm, could be a landscape since this theme is very open?
Dude, it can be anything... The requirements:
1. It was shot by you during the period that the contest was announced
2. You title the image either 'Oooh' 'Ahhh' or 'Mmmm'
It is completely open so if you do a chick covered in Jello or a sunrise either can be named 'Ahhh' and both would be considered (NOTE: anyone submitted a picture of a chick covered in Jello will be DQ'd if it is deemed that the image violates DVXUser's no pornography policy)
The concept behind this photography challenge for this week is to be as creative as possible and have it almost be a 'submit anything you want' thread.
I keep hoping that Mikko's image will be a photo of Red footage.

I am more of a photographer than a filmmaker (actually..... more a photoshopper than a photographer.. ..You get the idea!!). I've joined DVXuser cause I am looking for a DVX cam for my son. My info is already in the Marketplace, so I won't repeat it here.
This sounds like a fun challenge, I've already have some ideas.

I've been on the sidelines for these contests but for this contest I'll submit. What the heck. I don't have a great camera, I'm in the process of purchasing one, so for now I only have a point and shoot. But it's actually not bad. And I agree, it's the indian.
Jeremy, great idea to get people shooting. I think this contest is a great & fun idea.
Jeremy Ordan
09-10-2006, 12:47 AM
The goal of these contests has been and will continue to be to inspire creativity, to encourage people to get out and shoot something, to understand blocking, composition, and lighting techniques that apply not only to photography but to filmmaking, and most importantly to help everyone improve as a visual artist, whether that is through filmmaking or photography (they are completely linked).
Welcome to the contest, it really is a lot of fun

B) It's going to be very easy for someone to run away with this one because of the small number of submissions
C) The topic just sucks so you can blame Jeremy Ordan (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/member.php?u=7852) who picked the topic

It's a weekly gig... I don't think 7 days is too short to plan and shoot vague topics...
If it was something like Waterfall or Full Moon that would be almost too demanding, but regardless of whether we have 10 entries or 200 the people who participate, give, and receive feedback always enjoy themselves and find it to be a rewarding experience.

I apologize for the quality, as it was a cell phone picture. I was driving home from work, and saw this amazing sunset... the sun was shining through this mess of clouds and this pink light was shining through. It was quite spectacular. I was kicking myself for not even having my DVX with me. Oh well. Good round again everyone, and I look forward to the next theme! :)

Well this one was mine.
http://www.stffilms.com/Photos/albums/userpics/10002/normal_Laura_Mmmm.jpg
I shot nearly 300 images during this model session with about 7-9 poses specifically in mind for this contest, but ultimately settled upon this one because of the eye position, the lighting, and the flat DOF. The lighting was rather simple, a 1200 Watt soft box on the models right and an SB800 bounced off the ceiling for fill. I had a reflector on the right hand side to balance out nose shadows, and think that the overall lighting is nice and muted. This was shot on the Nikon 18-70DX lens at about 55mm, F8, can't remember shutter. Ultimately the thing I liked about this image was that it really had a nice flow in my eyes and I thought the Mmm concept was duplicated not only through the red but also through the icepop.
Photoshop adjustments were pretty minor, some desaturation, some enhancing of the reds and some sharpening of the hair to make it pop. I did play with some curves, but there are already a lot of curves with the image :)

How many icepop's did it take to get through the whole thing? Being under the lights I'd think it'd melt quickly..

3... We did these and then a whole batch of nudes... The bad thing is these are those low carb ones and they had been in my freezer for 9mos, so they were frost bitten and everything... We had to run them under the sink and then get her set up and lit in order to take the picture. Honestly though, this model is one of the best I have ever had the pleasure to work with. She was creative, excited, energetic, up for anything...
I will post the cow bell pictures this weekend :)

Cool. I am sure it's always nice to work with a good person like that, I only speak from working with actors... but when they're excited, and creative, it makes all the difference.

As in the description... I was just outside roasting some coffee and thought it looked really good (you non-coffee people just don't get it :) ). I took a few shots while it was cooling and liked this one the best. I'm surprised it came out sharp enough since i was holding the camera in one hand and the spoon in the other (shutter speed was 1/2 second). I need an assistant!
Looking at the sudden drop in the score (from 3.4 to 2.5 - ouch) it looks like some of those non-coffee peeps showed up in the last hour! Oh well, just a game!

Shot on a Canon A520. Three separate shots. The ghost and killer where added in photoshop. The girl is my lovely girlfriend. She wasn't crazy about getting nude but really liked the final picture. I wanted to show a little ghost breast but that wouldn't fly. The killer is me with the camera on selftimer. I had a stocking on my head which was way to tight. B&W in post and some highlighting and level adjustments and that's about it. Also erased an outlet and a shoe that was behind the ghost. Overall, I think it turned out better than I was expecting and I learned a few things in photoshop.

Took a bunch while playing around with the camera at a dinner at IBC. This is my very good Steadicam Operator friend Richard Lewis.
I debated if I should crop to adjust the framing, but I decided to keep it as it was shot.
We took some really funny ones as part of the set too...

OK, since people complaint for my picture, here are some explanations...
I travelled 60 km but missed the time, the sun had already set and they had just closed the site. So I couldn't get in and went to a nearby hill to get the pic which turned out crap.
To get an idea of what I wanted to shoot, here is a link with the same site/structure:

I didn't know what to do, so I did this at the last minute. It's just a bottle of homemade mead lit with 1/2 CTO to warm things up a tad. My favorite part of this shot is the shadow.

Mick no flash was used on my photo, that is why it is yellowish. I just had two 500w photofloods for this. I just bought a nice bounce swivel flash that I may be use this next round. I am sure if I had it for this past round i could have made the photo more true to life, and made the colors pop.

Yeah, I am trying to get to the bottom of why that thread disappeared... it'll be back up soon, it was a misunderstanding... I'll try to implement a link in my sig as well, good idea!
