View Full Version : Idiocracy

Just saw it tonight, and it was awesome to say the least... the only thing is that Fox is almost trying to hide the fact that its even been released. No trailer, no publicity, and a very limited release. Pretty strange considering the amount of cult success that 'Office Space' achieved; its sad to say that this movie is destined for the same fate. If your lucky enough to have a theatre around you showing it, go see it ...that way you can brag to your buddies that you were there from the beginning.

From IMDB: "Private Joe Bowers, the definition of "average American", is selected by the Pentagon to be the guinea pig for a top-secret hibernation program, set 500 years in the future. He discovers a society so incredibly dumbed-down that he's easily the most intelligent person alive."

A fun and entertaining movie. Check it out if you like Mike Judge's stuff...

Interesting. I had no desire to see this but you have convinced me. Certainly sounds interesting. (I had only seen the poster before reading your description.)

i happened to be in LA the weekend it opened.

The first night i was about twenty minutes late, and some majorly uptight guy would not let me in. Would not at all. First He carded me, which I didn't care about, but it's stupid to not let someone into a movie like Idiocracy. if he heard about it, don't make him not see it. Then, he was like "it started twenty minutes ago, tehre's no way you can get in to the showing." My answer "what about previews? I'd only miss the first part of the movie."

"No, there aren't any previews"

"... So you can't just let me in late?" Mind you I'm from San Diego, so I don't really have opportunities to see this movie other than this weekend or dvd.

"No, no way you can see this movie now."

So I left, pretty pissed.

Cue Sunday. I did what I was up in LA for, and still really wanted to see the damn movie. I was there at the ticket booth at the exact time the movie started, prepared this time. I had my money and my id out. I asked for a ticket and the teller (a girl, this time) just said ok.

I stood there with my ID in hand.

"...Here's my ID."
"... So?"
"Well, it's an R movie"
"(amused)I don't care about that. Where do you want to sit?"

I got in there, rushing because, well, there are NO PREVIEWS, and I didn't wanna miss the movie. I damn near sprint into the theater, make an ass out of myself borderline jogging through the lobby, and hurtle myself into the theater.

At this point, on the screen, there was a fucking PREVIEW.

Multiple previews.

I was... very, very pissed off about Friday night at that point.

but then I saw the movie, and found it to be very funny and hyper satirical.

Really good stuff. I don't wanna go into it much and ruin jokes, but the premise i figured out in my head is pretty much "What if a Peter Gibbons character (Office Space) was placed in a futuristic world full of Beavises and Buttheads?"

If that sounds intriguing, you might wanna see it.

Some really great cameos--Justin Long is hilarious.

First problem: Why do you have to bother people 20 minutes into a film?

Second Problem: Sounds like you went to the Arclight. When it first opened I thought it sounded like a good idea. Restaurant/bar in the lobby, assigned seats, no dips coming in late bothering people.... but now it is my least favorite theater. If you buy online, there is no way to pick your exact seat, you select a section and no way to say what part of that section you prefer. Next, even if you buy online two hours in advance, all the center seats are sold out. Then, if you try to buy tickets at the box office, even an hour ahead of time, there is only front row seating on the sides left.

At any other theater, if I am seeing a film by myself, I could even go to Pirates on opening night, go in after the 3 mile line has let in and still find a single seat where I prefer to sit.

The Arclight blows. Angelinos only like it because it seems snooty and it's all "Hollywood" so they like to feel special. It bites. Go to Burbank. (Or the Grove if you wanna be surrounded by hotties, but Burbank is better.)

Third: Even the next time, you showed up at the box office at the exact time it started!!!!!! Comeon man, give people a break. Get there a few minutes early, get in your seat and stay out of our way when the trailers start. Por Favor.

Other than that.....

Movie sounds fun. Cant wait to see it. (However Elisha Cuthbert and Camilla Belle kissing in The Quiet sounds much better at the moment; and now that it's no longer only at the Arclight, I can see it somewhere else.)

Dude, it's not like i'm riding in there on a horse with a leaf blower when i come into the theater. I'd walk up to my seat and sit down. I suppose the assigned seating would make that a problem, but how was I supposed to know it was assigned seating?

It'd be just as if I had walked out to use the restroom and walked back in. As long as they aren't pricks and the movie doesn't suck, i've never once been bothered by someone politely walking in and going to a seat.

And, again, for the record, the people I sat next to came in a couple of minutes later than I did.

Also, I'm a San Diegan depending on a bunch of people who don't know LA to get me to a theater.

I'm just stating my case, don't take this as me being pissed off at you. But it could be worse. I know how big of douche bags people can be at movies, and let me assure you, I'm not one of those guys even if I did get to a movie late and not by my own wishes (we were waiting for someone who wasn't even going to the movie)

But yeah, I don't like the Arclight. Prices are RIDICULOUS too, and I worked at a movie theater.

But who cares man, the movie was great. Check it out

I've read stuff that says that the comedy isn't smart and super satirical and whatnot--let me tell you, that's not an entirely true statement. In fact, the movie is subtlely smart and satirical, which would seemingly be an impossibility considering the movie is based upon a society of COMPLETE MORONS. Do they expect witty banter like Office Space? That means they're as dumb as the people depicted in the movie. Satire is blaring in it, and intelligence is obvious. Remember, it takes a smart person to make a good movie about dumb people.

go into it realizing the movie is called "IDIOCRACY" and you won't be disappointed. Some of the ideas and plays on current advertising are laugh out loud funny.

I personally like the ArcLight. Never had a problem there. And say what you want about their snooty seating policy, but that and the high prices deter the teenage two-way messenger crowd from ruining the film. That alone is worth something.

Now as for this movie, it was freaking terrible. Office Space, like for many of you, is my favorite comedy of all time, so I was super-looking forward to this. But it was just bad. I can't quite put my finger on it other than to say the premise got old after awhile. And that a movie about stupidity eventually became, well... too stupid. I do not see this gaining cult status. But I do see Mike Judge never making a film again after twice being screwed by Fox. This guy is the Terrance Malick of comedies. But is this the end of his career?

The only thing that upset me was that i wasn't late in light of the fact that there were trailers before the movie, and the guy told me there weren't trailers. He was just being kind of an ass about it. I'm a 17 year old kid there from San Diego who wanted to see a movie with zero press, meaning i'd have to make concerted effort to even know what the heck it's about. And he just gave me the cold shoulder probably because I was a teenager. It really pisses me off that you guys always dismiss every single teen late to a movie as part of a crowd that doesn't appreciate cinema. I know plenty of people who can go to movies and not act like asses.

Let's put it this way: you say theaters should get rid of teenagers because they're ALL disturbances and ALL are rude and impolite.

Someone else says that theaters should get rid of black people because they ALL talk to the screen loudly and ALL are rude and impolite.

Don't try and say there's much of a difference, because that's just being an internet dumbass who tries to prove a point that can't be proven.

Stop picking on the goddamned kids. The kids are allright. Some of them are pricks, but a lot of them are good. Plus, they'll probably control your pension when you get older, so don't get on their bad list fellas.

-----------

Rant over. That wasn't directed totally at you CG. That was building up for a long while

Regarding what you thought of the movie--yeah, that seems to be pretty much the complaints with the movie.

I thought the super satire of the movie was very intelligent though. The way they parody the law system, medical systems, and advertising in the future are brilliant.

****SPOILER******

Did you at least like the part where the doctor was diagnosing Luke Wilson as having his "shi*t screwed up" and that "he kinda talks like a fag"? I thought that was such a fun and not too far off representation of an exaggerated redneck making fun of a well versed and intelligent person. I dug that dynamic.

And the president wrestler? You didn't like that?

Granted, stuff like the pimp army officer, and pretty much the scenes with Maya Rudolph weren't that good, but I thought most of it was fun. Like the meeting of all the White House Secretaries and ASS winning 8 Oscars.

spencer, you sound like you appreciate and care about cinema, and for that you get my respect. but unfortunately, I do believe you are the exception to the rule. Yes, I know that not all teenagers are disturbing, but in my recent cinematic experiences when there's been a disturbance, an inconsiderate teenager and his cell phone have been at the heart of it.

*sorta spoilers*

Anyway, the stuff that you mentioned was the ONLY STUFF I LAUGHED AT. But yes, I did think they were funny. But the Costco bit, the plant stuff (mainly that it was a major plot point), and the Attack Of The Clones'esque gladiator showdown were terrible.

Oh, and I also liked the damaged building being held together by rope. And Luke Wilson escaping jail by telling them they had made a mistake was good. I was kind of into the movie for the first 20 minutes or so. But it got increasingly bad. I'm in desperate need of a good comedy. Do they make good comedies anymore?

Yeah, stereotypes are usually somewhat true. I'm just saying there's more of us than you think that aren't complete D-Bags at movies.

Trust me, the people you're talking about, I hate them as much as you do. Like people who feel the need to announce crap to the audience like "HOLY CRAP, I DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING!"

Have they no shame?

And yeah, I definately get the point. I just think that comedy is such crap now that I appreciated a handful of funny stuff much more than I would earlier.

I still dig a lot of that, but the stuff you point out, yeah, that was bad. although the Costco stuff initially was funny. Just the reveal type thing, but then it wasn't too good.

And the [KIND OF SPOILER] "Ow, my balls" schtick got old.

I think i'm just proud of myself for seeing something this limited of a release, so maybe I like it more ;)

I have got to agree with Jimmerson in his estimation of this film.

I was really excited to see this especially given how honest and brilliant I consider Office Space to be, so I have pretty high hopes. We rented it and right away the DVD menu movie spoils a decent part of the film for you. I start the movie slightly pissed off.

------------------------------------

A couple of smiles, a couple of chuckles, but nothing brilliant. It is the complete antithesis of every other sci fi future film (Demolition Man, Bladerunner, Alien... name it, this is the antithesis to them all). The problem is that even with all the subtle brilliant humor the film just stalls and feels slow and a comedy shouldn't be slow... This movie just doesn't work on so many levels that I don't get it. I guess it has the potential to be a cult favorite along the lines of Troma films but this is no where near the level of something like Office Space. Maybe his next film will be "much gooder"

-----------------------------------

Overall, maybe worth a rental, certainly not a purchase, but if you miss it completely then you're not missing much. It is like a Will Farrell film, some lines and jokes stick with you but that doesn't mean it is a quality film (Shake & Bake = Much Gooder.... Walker Texas Ranger = Brought to you by Carls Jr..... Baby Jesus = It's got electrolytes)

I was really looking forward to seeing this on DVD since it was basically blacklisted during the theatrical run. While I loved the premise of the movie, I was kind of let down. Not saying that I didn't laugh a lot, 'cause i did. It just seems like a good idea had been just slapped together. With a little more tweaking, it could have been incredible.

I wonder what the version of the film that Fox put the kabash on was like. Since he had to do a ton of reshoots and patch it all together, it really had no chance of being good. But I'm going to give the edge to Judge over Fox on the quality of the previous version. Since Judge doesn't do interviews, and nobody speaks of this film, I doubt we'll ever get the answers (or a director's cut). But I'm tempted to stalk and meet Judge and become his best friend just so he'll show me the real version of this film.

This movie is the 2007 version of the ASS movie within the film. Made to be stupid and to mock current films? I doubt it, just bad. At least Judge can fall back to his career as a voice actor!

I saw this last night on HBO, I thought it was hilarious. I was just cruising with my remote and checked the log line and it got my attention. Then I saw the date it was release(last year) I was wondering why this movie never got any promotion or anything, then I read this little fact..

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387808/faq

From reading this thread, I see people are split, the best part of the whole movie was the fast food vending machine''

*Spoilers*

when the machine says, ur a bad mother and so on, I haven't laughed like this in a while.

Watching this, you can tell it was rushed a little bit, but I think minus a few things it could have cult potential...

3 Stars(for it doing what it set out to do, which is make a stupid movie with humor)

If you haven't seen it, check it out. Didn't want to start a new thread so I ressurected this fromt the dead... Sue me.

I don't like being distrubed when I'm watching a film, but I'm not going to be a cinema-nazi about it....and previews were made to be missed.

I'm the kind of guy who would rather miss the first 97 seconds of a film than have to go to the washroom right in the middle of it. Once I'm seated, I'm all business...(excuse the double entendre.)

How else would you display a civilization of people that would watch "ASS"? By showing them reading books and making witty jokes about hi-brow culture? Sometimes you have to dig deep to get the true meaning of something. Do you honestly think Fox didn't publicize the film because it sucked, or because they saw it as a threatening critique to them and all their adverstising investors? Because there are worse movies that have made it to the box offices and had promotional spots.

Overall, the movie was ok. It had some really good parts, and some real clunkers too. What made it a classic in my eyes, was the prophetic outcome of the Human race. That earned Mike Judge a little more respect in my book, even after Bevis and Butthead.

WTF? The dude has been the creator and writer of two successful animated television shows (one of them stupid, and I don't mean King Of The Hill) with huge syndication runs, plus he's written and directed an animated feature and at least one very good movie.

I just saw it, and thought it was good. Maybe a bit heavy handed, but in the same way Omega Man and Soylent Green were overdone just a tad. I think the film was aimed at a broad audience, so it couldn't be too didactic or preachy.

Dark satire isn't easy to pull off, but Judge manages to make his points while still keeping things light and enjoyable. The film is rather silly at times, but the things that pass for acceptable these days are freakin' nuts, yet nobody says or does anything. It's like a Kurt Vonnegut Jr. kind of world.

Luke Wilson is great as a regular guy who doesn't seem to lose his temper too easily given the situation (I prefer him to Owen...by a large margin), and who knew Maya Rudolph could put in a competent performance?

P.T. must be giving her acting tips...
