If you shot 24p on VIDEO, then use 23.976.
NTSC video runs at about 29.97fps (30 times 1000 / 1001). For "24p" video to be displayed on 29.97fps TV sets, you have to alter the speed to 23.976fps and add 3:2 pulldown.
With the DVX, the footage is scanned 23.976fps to begin with and then recorded to tape with pull-down.
I think actual film cameras record at true 24.000fps. There is something really complicated going on with timecode and audio which I won't get into (because I get confused by it). To put it simply, the subtle difference between 24.000fps and 23.976fps can cause problems if you're not careful.

What...Glen....You mean then we will have to actually R&D how our video willplay on what TV and then make a master edit ? Gosh how is that possible. Lets say ive shot on a 24fps mode using the DVX. Now i create a timeline in vegas with project settings at 720x576 (pal) at 24fps and import from the DVX onto this timeline. Now lets say i want to burn a dvd with good clarity that would play as compatibly as any hollywood movie dvd. What format do we render out to or via DVD arch. Thanks.

plainman, aren't you in England? You're in PAL country. Your DVX doesn't shoot 24p. Just stay in PAL/25p and you're fine.
For 24p shooters, it's easy -- edit using a 24p project template. Export using 24p templates.

The North American DVX100 shoots 23.976fps and DVDs from Hollywood movies are 23.976fps (although I think the original film is 24.000fps).
For 24p shooters, it's easy -- edit using a 24p project template. Export using 24p templates.

Hi David, Nice to see you back in action.
Im in a Pal zone. But Srilanka. Not in England. The model that sells here is the DVX102B (Pal).
So id have to shoot in 25P or 25PA then import it onto a 24p timeline or onto a 25p timeline.
Then export to 24p templates. Or 24p dvd template.
What should my vegas project settings be ?? since i want it in widescreen on my dvd and im planning to crop to 1.85 which is like scope or something.

There's no reason for you to work in 24p. 25p is what your footage is, and what you want to work in in Vegas. Then, just use PAL settings. Export as 25p or PAL, not 24p.
There is no 25pA -- there are no pulldown schemes with 25p/PAL. There is only 25p.

Oh ok...But David wont there be an actual difference in the highly revered 24fps format or film look versus the 25p ? Or is it that they look the same ? If thats true then is pal a natural alternate to film effect and framerates ? Also being higher in resolution.

There's a difference, but it's a tiny one. Most people can't tell.
PAL is no substitute for 24p because it's an interlaced format which runs at 50 Hz, not 24 Hz. 25p fits neatly into it because 25 is half of 50.
