DVXUser Photography Challenge: Round Four
Why?
Why is a filmmaking community doing something with photography? Simple... With photography you learn about lighting, composition, framing, blocking, and it is fun. Ask any of the 30 people who submitted for the first round to raise money for charity as well as participate in a community event and they will tell you, it was fun, plus:
It is very simple
The Rules:
*Take a picture, in the time period, that fits within the topic of the week on any camera with any lens that you want (D-SLR, Film, DVX, XL1, Cellphone)
*Post process the image in any way that you choose and see fit.
*Please do not post any images that are larger than 8" x 10" at 72DPI
*Email the image to DVXUser@stffilms.com along with any comments regarding the image
*Vote and comment on the images submitted
*The winner will choose the topic for next weeks photography contest.
Simple, right? Maybe too simple... So what's the catch? There is no catch! No cost. No one profiting. No one stealing your images and claiming them as their own. Nothing...
PRIZE:
*The winner chooses next weeks topic (example: landscape, macro, or anything) & if we exceed 50 entries I will make a $50 donation to Isara.com. If we exceed 250 entries, I will donate $250 to Isara.com which is an associates degree in Thailand (according to PK). Your participation can help give the gift of education.
This week's topic: City Life(completely open to interpretation) chosen by Week 2's winner Nobody356 (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/member.php?u=5902)
Due Date: September 6th @ 11:59 EST
Voting Period: September 7 - September 10rd @ 11:59 EST
Next Topic Posting on: September 6th (by winner of Round 3 - Addiction (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=68642))
Good luck everyone and I can't wait to see what you submit!
-Jeremy

I wanted to toss this idea out there to everyone:
Any participant who submits but does not comment on all the images (last night it took me not even 20 minutes to comment and I write a lot) should be DQ'd...
I believe that the purpose of these contests is to:
A. Get out there and shoot something
B. Take an idea and execute it
C. To improve
D. To participate in a community activity with other filmmakers
I think that if you submit and want other people to view and comment on your work then you should have the courtesy to do the same.
What is everyone else's opinion?
-Jeremy
Steve_Arm
08-31-2006, 10:08 AM
That is correct.
My concern is that there are some images that have more votes than others. I think each voter should be allowed to log in and vote only if he votes on all the images.
Jeremy Ordan

I don't even know where to begin with coding for something like that let alone how to enforce it. The voting and winning thing is completely secondary, it is about the feedback in my opinion.

What is everyone else's opinion?
-Jeremy
Hmm... I don't know. I actually took the time to comment on everyone's photos in the first round, but didn't do it the second time. I did go through and comment on my favorites and those that I thought I could add something constructive. Sometimes I'm at a loss for words and I don't think a forced "Good job!" is worth anything to anyone. I'm also hesitant to comment if I don't like something... "if you don't have something nice to say...." I know we're all here to improve and constructive criticism is great (I know I appreciated it on my pictures), I just have a hard time dishing it out sometimes!
I didn't enter round 3 (again, I had a couple good ideas with coffee or M&M's, but I waited until the last minute and something else came up - oops), but I'll try to comment on them anyway!
Either way, I'm fine with it.

I've commented on all pics for all 3 contests.
I agree with Jeremy, though I sympathize with the opinion of not writing anything too negative, or just adding a "me, too" to others' comments.
Jeremy Ordan
08-31-2006, 12:01 PM
There is a difference between negative, insulting, and blunt constructive criticism, in my opinion. If I submit something where it is: A. out of focus B. too soft C. non compliant with the topic D. stupid E. crap F. boring I want people to tell me and be honest.
As I said, I don't think it is about winning as much as improving week to week.

I really wanted to join in the fun this week, and I know it's a cop out, but I was buried with a screenplay I had to have finished by the 30th. I found it hard to wrap my head around getting a good idea executed and I wasn't about to repeat my mistake from week 1 where I threw something together a couple of hours ahead of the deadline.
I am looking forward to this weeks competition. I already know what I'm going to shoot tomorrow.
Even though I didn't have an entry in round 3, I took the time to comment.

Steve... wow!... they have a pretty complex system there. Here we are smaller and just getting started. It is mostly for team spirit and learning from each other.
We do keep it anonymous so rating isn't affected from knowing which image belongs to whom, although in time you can learn a user's style.

I guess I'm missing something here with this. I have been back and forth in this thread the though this seems to reference something I'm completely lost as to what it is. Just curious that's all.
In regards to commenting, I think it is only fair to comment. If it's good say so, if not advise how to make better, if you have no ideas at least leave a general comment. Drive by voters don't really help the process of learning. :dankk2:

I live in the country too. And not like you Brandon, I mean in WV "country". AKA the anit-city.
The nearest "city" is Pittsburgh. I have a couple of nice view spots of Clarksburg, some that would be even scenic, but the city is so small, unmodern and delapidated it's almost embarrasing. And, theres a hell of a lot more forest than concrete. That's all supposing the humidity would drop to the point that I could actually have visability more than half a mile and could get some nice shots.
So I'm scratchin my head as to what I could submit.

Actually I was going to do a composite double exposure type thing and I have my model already shot but not the other part... but it's all for naught.
Plus, Scharky's is better than mine would have come out. I am going to reshoot something I shot a while ago because I know I can shoot it and process it to submit it in under an hour... and that is all that matters, so about 11pm I will get started on that :)

I know I did it this week on my comments and already I see the regulars doing it and I see nothing wrong with it because the overall point of these contests is to learn but there is a bluntness in people's comments (especially mine). I think that this is a good thing and I hope that everyone takes it to learn from and not as a personal attack. That being said, if ANYONE feels that something is inappropriate please PM me so I can take care of it, but I think there is a difference between honest bluntness and a rude personal attack. This is the sort of feedback that I think is best, for me at least :)
OK, just wanted to throw that out there.

After 4 weeks and a core of 5-7 people participating every week you can really see certain styles from certain people start to come out and you can identify who did which image...

Well it's after midnight, so here is my shot (although everyone knows which is mine because I use the same damned border every week and this looks almost identical in color processing to my Splash shot)
http://www.stffilms.com/Photos/albums/userpics/10002/normal_Rats_With_Wings.jpg
Story... My mother bought a computer and I went to set it up for her.. Then I just tried to get myself lost by driving the opposite way I would go from home and turning anytime I saw a street I knew... Took about an hour but I ended up in Monroe, NC... Sort of this suburb or Charlotte... Took this picture:
http://www.stffilms.com/Pictures/Monroe%20IR.jpg
I drove back to Charlotte and ended up downtown. I normally go to the top of a parking deck at night and shoot the sky line but this was 3:30pm and a parking deck that was taller and more centrally located (7th st. for anyone local, 15+ stories up). Well I took a ton of IR images of the city, buildings, horizon... Oh, important note: I left my super zooms (70-210) at home... that plays into my story
So I got bored... at this point I decided to see how close I could get to the several hundred pigeons on the other side of the parking lot. I got a lot of shots of these birds just sitting there and then caught the tail end of them taking off. I was happy but agree with the feedback about the angle of the horizon
The color correction was mild, just bluing up the sky
Ultimately I debated heavily about which image to submit... I chose the non IR bird one (obviously) because I thought it was more of a city vibe.
Now my original idea was exactly what Scharky did, I already had my model posing nude and was going to shoot my street shot until I saw his and knew I couldn't compete... I guess that really gives me an unfair advantage and helped make up my mind, but still... I didn't want to submit something that wasn't going to be original and then have it be so far inferior to the other similar concept.
So back to the birds, it was an opportunity shot, it's OK, not my best work but I had to participate and I think it has room for improvement but... either way, 'nuff said, it is a picture and I'm not ashamed but not glowing with satisfaction.
OK, so that's my story, that's my entry...

Here is my Image... Cinema Choices. When I heard we were doing "City Life" I right away knew I wanted a shot of someone looking up at a movie theatre. I always go "into the city" to see movies, so it jumped out at me. On Saturday a buddy of mine, and me went to see a flick, so I just grabbed several shots outside the theatre. Here's a before and after look at the photo. I do a lot of post-processing work, (mainly due to the limitations of my camera (it's all auto, all the time)) but I try to make it look as natural as possible. I do agree it would have looked EVER BETTER at night, but I am happy with how the shot turned out :) Thanks!

I'm a little disappointed in the problems I had with compression. It certainly softened it up. Here it is at closer to the original size. I believe it is a bit sharper.
I hate being busy and rushing to get something. Tim (Slimothy) and I were in at Cinema Secrets getting some FX apliances and as we came home, past Glendale, I stopped to get some shots. I took about 60 shots of tall buildings and such, but this is the picture that was different than all the rest I took and I liked the idea of all the different publications available to people in the city. I probably should have gone with a slightly slower shutter speed to give the cars in the background more motion but what the hey, it was spur of the moment. I was rushing because we have been trying to make sure we're ready to shoot our HorrorFest entry this weekend. Of couse, that'll put a crimp on next week, but I've got an idea...

Mailbox is mine.
Another run & gun shot with very little planning. I didn't even seriously consider that one for entry untill I got back to the computer.
Sorry I don't have time to comment more than that this week due to IBC, etc... thoguh I have read all the feedback I got, thankyou.

Okay, this one was mine:

I took it from my car using 35mm. The reason it looks a tad soft is because my scanner sucks. The original is crystal clear.
Here's the original:

You can see that I replaced the sky with a shot I took the next day. I took a cloud shot just to finish the roll on my way to the mall to get it processed. Luckily, I ended up using it. It was far more interesting.

Great sky replacement Horse... I never would have guessed it was touched up like that.
I really like this image and like I said in my comments, respect the different style you used for this submission. Great job.

Great shot Horse! I had a sense that was yours! Nice nice sky replacement. I love the major touch-ups that are so natural they are undetectable! Nice work!

I just saw this portrait being taken, and quickly asked the parents and the artist if they minded if I took a picture (I told them I was taking a photography course-not such a stretch, really).
It was taken with my aging (5 or 6 year old point and shoot Olympus digital), so don't know what the settings were.
The other two pics I considered submitting were this one of an aging hippy:
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/7683/1157770481.jpg
which I didn't use because I didn't like the garbage can in the shot,
and this one of a cop car:
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/7683/1157770540.jpg
which I kind of liked, but my wife said was stupid.
The best thing that this contest has taught me is to really know the limitations (and possibilities) of the cam that I have been forced to use for this contest. It is an aging point and shoot digital with no control over anything, and an interminable shutter lag. But it can do a reasonable job with certain types of pics, which I am learning.
Am hoping to post comments tomorrow on everyone's pics. I'm riding 100 miles on my bike in a charity ride tomorrow (the MS 150), and expect to be totally wiped tomorrow evening. But I will try to post.

I know this is a little late, but what the hell. I took this a few months ago, and it's been my wallpaper ever since. I didn't know these forums moved at this kind of pace. Anyway...

This is Bondi Junction. Don't be fooled by the trees on the left, they're mostly for show, because behind them is the Harbour Bridge and the rest of Sydney. On the right is the biggest mall in the southern hemisphere.
