Ya know, I've been a gun enthusiast since I was 14 and my father took me to the range for the first time. I "own" several hand guns by now, and I usually carry with me when I head down town on shoots, etc. (film shoots, that is)
Just wondering if anyone else enjoys them, or carries when they head to bad parts o' town.
Also, why can't I have an inexpensive hobby? Between DVX accessories and weekly ammo, I'm always tapped out.

My brother (he lives in the same apt building as me) owns a lot of guns, some great hand guns, a Ruger and a really nice Karr(sp?) its nice and small. Also has 2 AR-15's which have since been banned in California (BOOOOOO) but they totally kick ass, and im with you on the guns thing, except i personally dont like hunting. Never done, never will, i guess im just a big softy.

Yeah, I grew up around firearms, too. Got a couple...muzzleloader, Remington 270 shotgun, and a P99...well, the P99 only shoots 6mm balls of air, but it looks cool. My real thing is archery. Got two crossbows, two compound bows, three recurves and a longbow on the way.

I've never owned a gun before but I've always enjoyed shooting. It's something I've been meaning to take up for some time now but it seems like there's always something else needing my money immediately. Some things about being a college student suck! :crybaby:
The gun laws here in Montana and just about the most lax I have ever seen (for better or for worse).
Anyone want to recommend a good, reliable, and effective handgun I can start with?

That is one sweet looking AR15! And it sure looks like you know how to use it! I love those things (as well as the all-time action-movie favorite, the HK MP5). In handguns, Sig Sauer would be my first choice. Funny this thread should just come up . . . I just purchased my very first gun ever! Picked it up two weeks ago! Here's some pics:

Nice Shotty!
You might want to rethink the location of that shell saddle.
When you fire the shells may bite you in the cheek!
Consider relocation to the left side of the receiver:

If this is a FIRST hangun for you, and you want ultra relaibility and simplicity, I'd reccomend a Smoth and Wesson revolver in .38/.357.
That way you can shoot .38's at first to tget the feel of it, and then put .357's in it for when you are CCW for self defense.
If you want a semi, I'd reccomend a Glock, as they are the AK of hanguns and totally reliable.
In a 9mm there's the Glock 17, (what I have) and more compact Glock 19.

No guns for me- I dont enjoy killing. I dont get anything out of it.
"Guns dont kill people, people kill people"
"Guns dont kill people, I kill people"
Good then lets follow the COC and keep politics out of this discussion, shall we?

I have a p85 9mm, but thats it. I like the fact that if i run out of bullets i can beat someone to death with it.

Reliability yes, simplicity isn't necessarily important (though simplicity and reliability usually go hand in hand). This is NOT the first gun I have shot but it would be the first gun I own. I'm familiar with shooting, proceedures etc.
Thanks for the info :)

Does that count?

I'd second the Glock recommendation. I have a model 23 (.40 cal) compact and love it. It's much more powerful than 9mm and still holds 13 rounds. You can pick em up for just shy of about $500 brand new. Totally reliable, very simple to shoot and maintain.

Not a gun owner but I do know how to use one. (A revolver mostly). I learned in Boyscouts years ago but I haven't touched a real one since. (My dad had a shotgun and a revolver). The irony is being an action director I have about 10 airsoft guns that I don't really use save for filmmaking. They look very real and they're what most action films use now. But I too loved archery a lot more. If I went hunting I think I'd take a bow and arrow instead.
Later in life I'd like to go to the range and learn more modern artilery and maybe do a little paint balling. I was watching the championships on ESPN (didn't even know they had championships until a few months ago) and I enjoyed it. The tactical element was incredible.

for a truly beautiful first weapon, I myself would recommend the HK USP. either the 9mm or .45. If you want a gun that's reliable as the sunrise, that's you're best bet. GLOCK is right up there, but it never felt right in my hand.
My latest purchase, however, is going to be this Desert Eagle .44 I found with a nikcle finish. It's got all the things I'd want for a gun to move to L.A. with. Namely, low magazine capacity, hefty caliber, and the very important "crap your pants" factor. I'm a generally a nice guy, and I'd rather spook someone off than put one in their leg. I also have a fondness for all things minnesotan. My father was fortunate enough to sit down with the original designer a few years ago and just hang out. Apparently the .50AE caliber version of the DE wasn't in his original design, and wasn't something he really OK'd. That's the main reason I want to stay at a .44. that, and not paying $50 per box of 20 rounds for the .50ae.

I just really like the way the Sig Sauer fits in my hand, and where all the buttons and stuff are. It's a personal choice. They're all great guns--try all three in your hand, and you'll gravitate toward one or the other in a few minutes.

Probably the best advice so far. Go to a range where you can rent them all and see which one woprks for you. It will be pretty obvious when you're done.

I went with the HK usp compact for my first handgun. I spent countless hours in the range shooting almost every brand of handgun in their guncase. I really like the Sig and 1911 also.

I was impressed. :)

Although I'm strongly against using guns for killing, I love shooting at targets with them. I own a norwegian Mauser (6,5mm), and a deactivated German K98 Mauser. I used to own a Sauer 200STR, but it was too expensive to maintain and stuff.
