Is the JVC DV500 still a relevant camera?
I have a DVX100B. Someone was selling
a JVC dv500 and i was wondering if it was
worth getting as a spare camera.

It's a nice camera. 60i only, but you get some nice images from it. I've only used it once, but I liked it.

Depends on how good of a deal you're getting.
I just DONATED three of them to a school.
It would be fine as a backup, decent DV images.
Kind of large by today's standards though. A little heavy for mini-dv.
I just threw out a bunch of accessories that I could have given you.
Damn. Sorry.

Has nice strong DV image. Just wish it shot 16;9

That was my baby a lifetime ago -- I guess I sold it a good seven or eight years back. Excellent low light response. One of the first Mini-DV recording cameras in a proper camera body form factor. The 1/2" sensors really made a difference compared to something like the DVX100 or PD-150 of the time.

But that was so long ago. Tape trnsports and optical blocks age. I wouldn't drop more than $100 on one these days. Who still shoots Mini-DV 4x3?

Must be joking? Mine has 8 HOURS, yes 8 hours on it and i'd want at least $1200!

Many are still shooting 4:3!

I have a DV500 that's collecting dust on my shelf. Probably has about 40 hours on the drum. Nice camera, but like Mitch I question the viability of the camera in today's market. I'd love to sell it but have absolutely NO idea what it'd be worth in today's market.

I discovered on eBay that the lens to this camera alone recently fetched $300.

Seriously... is there any kind of market for this camera at all?
