What is everyone's list of classic movies that you all just hate and can't see why they are so acclaimed?

1. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington - 3rd act/ending was HORRIBLE

2. The Shining - a 2 Hour Steadicam commercial of people walking in hallways set to eerie music, with a convuluted plot with several holes, and an anticlimatic ending - the bad guy just gets tired and let's everyone escape???

3. Blow Up - don't even want to describe it

4. Birth of a Nation - the racism thing aside, sure it introduced a few basic film structure things, but nothing that was inevitable...hell comic books did CUs/parallel action etc long before film did - ok I hate it because of the stupid racist story LOL.

5. Triumph of the Will - yeah it was well shot and charismatic but if you've seen 5 minutes of it - you've seen the whole damn film. As a whole, it is not that great and extremely repetitive with the same shots over and over and over. Needs to be cut down to ten minutes. It is not a great feature.

I'll add more as I think of some...

It's four months old - I'm not digging up for something that old. Plus we have new users everyday that haven't even seen the older thread.

Plus it's not quite the same - I'm mainly talking about classic movies that are seen as the keystones to the history of film :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Not so much any main stream pop culture buzz - moreso the Casablancas, Psychos, Seventh Seals as opposed to the Matrix, American Beauty, Nap. Dynamite.

Tired ? The dude froze to death after getting lost.

Come back after you've actually seen the film.

Are you kidding me? To judge this film on enjoyment/entertainment/structure is completely ludicrous. You can't separate it from its historical context. It's a propaganda product of the Nazi era BUT it's an unbelievable technical achievement. Riefenstahl revolutionized shooting on location with this film and created a completely new editing style.

I won't even comment on your Birth of a Nation BS. If you're going to start a thread like this, is a little intelligence/insight too much to ask for?

If ever there were reason for photoshop!:)

And as to the thread topic, I don't think he was joking, but none of the films mentioned are overrated. When I think overrated I think of mostly pop movies that do very well.

The only one I think might be overrated that did get some acclaim was Gladiator. It was an entertaining movie. I just didn't think it was worthy of all the praise heaped upon it. It is pretty standard action fare set in a period piece.

Uh I didn't put Psycho on my list - I just used it to illustrate "classic/keystone" film vs. mainstream films. Geez
