Hi all,

I haven't seen Apocalypse now yet (WHAT!?!).....ok...I know...I heard that it's the greatest movie of all time but I just never got the chance to watch it.

Anyway, it seems like there are 2 versions, the original Apocalypse Now, and the longer edited director's cut version "Redux".

I'm planning on buying a DVD, but I don't know which one to buy.

Input Input!!

Why don't you just buy the new special editon deal? That way you can watch both, and some special features when your done.

If I could ONLY WATCH ONE, it would be Apocalypse Now. While the Redux version was very good, I didn't really feel the added scenes really made the movie any better...just longer. The original is still a tight masterpiece.

I don't know. I love both versions and, as of this moment, I prefer the Redux version. The original is tight but I think the Plantation scene provides a nice breather before they arrive at Kurtz's compound. While, maybe, not the strongest/tightest scene, I do like the historical context that it lends to the film.

It's a masterpiece either way.

Yes !

The historical part alone is great (The French involvement); jeez ...

I gotta agree with Shaun officialy

I have yet to see Redux. I'm a little cautious of "newly added footage" ever since the great Special Edition Fiasco of '97.

I did just rewatch Apocalypse Now again a couple of days ago. It must have been 12ish years since I saw it last. It is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces of cinema. It blows my mind that Copolla could be so disjointed during the filming and produce a film that is so specific and brilliant in its execution. In fact that might sum up the very thing that I love so much about filmmaking.

I saw an interview with Walter Murch once about the editing of the film. He said that if you take the number of cuts in the film and divide it by the number of days the editing team worked on the film is came out to 1.5 cuts per day. He said that if they knew what kind of film they were making they could have come in of a morning, made a cut, thought about the next cut, and called it a day. :)

I prefer the original, but I do love the redux.

Either way, you can't go wrong. It's one of my favorites of all time.

I bought this bad boy Sunday. I especially love the commentary. Coppola does his best not to sully the memory of great actor, but you can tell how he was at his wits end with Brando. Just the fact that he was able to deal with the situation speaks volumes about how great a director he is.

One of the greatest movies ever made. Easily. Whether it's pro-war or anti-war..let's not get into that.

Can someone please explain why Heart of Darkness has never been released on DVD? And why i can only find really crappy VHS copies in basement stores in Manhattan that are charging like 40 bucks for the movie?

Its such a great documentary i find it enfuriating that it isn't available for mainstream DVD consumption. Even if it wasn't packaged with apocalypse I'd by it separately.

When Coppola is running outta money, he'll probably release Apocalypse Now Redux Redux Titanium Directors Cut Ultra Extended Special edition - oh and it will have heart of darkness on Disk 10. but you have to look for it really hard because it's an easter egg.

You didn't know that? Well I'm sure you knew about Nicholas Cage. What I didn't know until recently that Sophia Coppola was in all three godfather films. She was the baby at the christening in #1. A girl on the boat when Vito comes to America in #2, and then of course her dreadful turn as the daughter in #3.

To be a Coppola means to have job security :)

Another thing that makes Apocalypse Now one of the best movies of all time is all the Marlon Brando stories that go along with it. That guy was a genius and crazy. And what he pulled on Coppola and the whole production only he could do.
- for months he wrote to Coppola that he needed to change the script to fit the character Kurtz better from the book Heart of Darkness and gave recommendations but never actually read the book and finally confessed it to Coppola by saying "i just wanted to see how long you would let me get away with it"
- he said he wouldnt do the flick unless he got a trailer in the middle of the jungle -which was nearly impossible and no one else had - and they finally helicoptered one in for him. as soon as he got on set he grabbed a tent and told the production staff to let the natives sleep in the trailer.
-he was supposed to show up fit and buff, but he showed up fat and bald and improved half his lines like "the horror, the horror"

and many other brilliant stories - poor Coppola -

"the horror, the horror"

I'm not sure if that's an improv.

It's been almost a decade since i read heart of darkness but i believe those were Kurtz's last words in the book also.

The redux re arranges some of the scenes and it really pissess me off! But the French scenes do add some historical contet to the movie.
