I have heard from others that there are problems when using dual layer DVD burners... I had a co-worker tell me that at one time, he made a bunch of DVD's and about 50% of them came out bad. My question is, is this common, if not, do you prefer a specific brand burner? I'm wanting to invest in a dual layer but if they truly are bad and don't work well, I don't plan on messing with them. Just looking for some clarity. Thanks!

So am i to assume that either you love gerbils, or no one has had any problems such as these? A yay or nay would be of the swellness....=)

Was your co-worker burning DL's or single layer discs. Are you confident that your co-worker knew what he was doing? Did he use quality media or the cheapest thing he could find? How old was the player he was testing them on?
There are a lot of factors that affect the succesful outcome of burned discs. I burn a ton of single layer discs and have done very few duals. Those that I burned worked fine. I happen to have a Memorex DL. Other things to keep in mind is that the DL media - in small quantities - are $6-7 per disc. +R discs , in my experience, are less reliable/compatible than -R. Most of the DL burners accept +R discs only when doing DL discs.

Thanks Preston... I'm not hearing anything from anyone. I may just break down and get one... Just thinking ahead when I need to put a full length film on DVD

was he burning data on the DL disks or video.
In terms of errors: if you are buring video, halfway through your video the disk should freeze for about 3 seconds. This is normal. It is the dvd player switching to the deeper layer.
If it is data you are talking about, most computers will not read or playback DL disks. You must play your disk back on the exact burner you used to burn it (since we are certain that this drive does obviosly recognize DL discs).

Not really sure. But what your telling me makes more sense... I think I'll break down and buy one anyhow. Thanks everyone...
