"You smell that? Do you smell that? Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for twelve hours. When it was all over I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end..."

I think Duvall's a bit overexposed (can't find a film he's not in) but The Apostle is the greatest story -- he shopped that script around for YEARS trying to get it made, and nobody would bite. So finally he sunk $5 million of his own cash to do it.
The result? $21 million box office, and Duvall got nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars and the SAG awards, won Best Actor at over half a dozen festivals and film critics' societies, and won the Independent Spirit Awards for Best Director, Best Feature, and Best Male Lead and got nominated for Best Screenplay and two noms for Best Supporting Female.
The guy seriously believed in himself and in his project. And it shows.

Yeah but it'd be more like the three degrees of Robert Duvall; no need to go all the way to six! :)
Bacon shows up as actor 61 times in the IMDB. Duvall is in 125! :)

Some other great (almost) forgotten roles in Shane, Bullitt, Mash and Tender Mercies, which he also produced. Loved that movie. When he sings that old gospel song, "On the wings of a snow white dove", I always get a little teary.
