I have the DVX connected to an external HD recorder (Nnovia Quickcapture, in this case). I've been trying to record only to the drive, not to tape.

If I have the DVX set to "both", recording to tape and drive, pressing the camera's record button toggles record and stop for both. Ie, it works normally.

If I have it set to "ext", pressing the camera's record button is totally inconsistent. Sometimes I can get the drive to start with the camera button, but not stop. Sometimes it's the opposite. Totally unreliable process.

So...one word answer: is it more likely to be the camera, or the drive that's the problem????

SOrry I had to do it. *DO you realy want a one word answer?

"drive"

The reason for this is becasue it is more likely that the drive is haveing a hard time communicating with the camera. I have used the camer in the same way recording to DV rack, and had no problems with it. you might try the trial and see if it works in the same way. If it works flawlessly then it is your drive, but if it works occasionally like your were explaining then it is the camera.

Scharky, I use a Mac. :D
Downside: no DV Rack for me.

Hmmm...I was actually leaning toward the camera being the problem, since, regardless of whether it's set to "ext" or "both" I assume the signal it sends over FW is seen the same way by the drive.

Jan, any chance you could offer some insight on this??

Can you get a signal into your computer via the FW. If so its the drive.

What happens if there is no tape in the cam? Any difference?

Jan, if it's the drive, why it would accept the record/stop signals and act normally when camera is set to "both" but not "ext."? Seems to me the camera is getting confused about what to do with the "ext" setting, and there wouldn't be any difference in what the drive would "see" coming through FW in either setting.

I guess the logical problem I see is, how would the drive even be aware of which setting I"m using on the camera?

Barry Green, anyone else ....any ideas??

I can't answer definitively, as I don't have and haven't used the QuickCapture. However, I do seem to recall reading that with one of the other drives, the Quickstream or something, that you actually had to have a tape in the camera to start external recording... don't know the details, don't remember.

The thing is, you're talking about two nonupgradeable devices -- the camera's firmware, and the drive's firmware. So whatever the reason, you're not going to just download a software fix. You need to go with whatever solution is working for you -- if it works on "both", go with "both". Will "both" send the signal even though there's no tape in the camera?

And for reference, I'd recommend contacting Bruce Yale over at nNovia... he's always been very helpful in answering my questions here and at DVInfo, and I'm sure he could give you the one-word answer you're looking for.

Thanks, Barry. Sensible advice, as always.

FYI, the drive DOES have firmware, but I think the company has to upgrade it. I can at least read the firmware revision # on the display.

I say the drive because the setting is there for the EXT function, the drive just doesn't get it. See if the manufacturer has a firmware upgrade to deal with it.

Best,

Jan: Yup, I'm waiting to hear from the drive people and I've already told them what firmware # it has.
