This is for those who can play DVCProHD clips from QT.

I only made it a 5 sec. clip in order to keep the file size from getting too huge but it will give some of you who are curious to see what uncompressed 4:2:2 SDI from the H1 (and likely from the G1) looks like in different codecs that bypasses HDV.

This is sub-sampled 4:2:2 (1280x1080) in native DVCPRO HD 1080 24p. It was shot the other night at my good friend George D's (a dvxuser member) house. We used a Gateway 21" LCD monitor with component HD input for monitoring. Worked great. http://reviews.cnet.com/Gateway_FPD2185W/4505-3174_7-31563945.html

Shot with the XL-H1 and the 16x manual lens. Captured with the Kona LH card and FCP. (56 MB) http://www.realm.cc/upload/Elton/SDI/H1-SDI-DV10024pKid.mov

Here's a pic from it for those who can't play DV100 clips:

Here's a slow mo clip from SDI. This was shot 1080i, bypassing HDV (which I ran at the same time...looks the same) and used the Nattress plug-in to convert fields to frames.

This is how it looks as 720 "overcrank" from 60p conversion:

(PhotoJPEG QT 70MB)

Always a pleasure, Elton.

I might have a bad memory, but the colors are really robust in the beachball clip. Did yo udo something different there?

Nope. Just a color gain of +1 (out of + or -9 values). Cinegamma 2, detail -2 , Master Ped -4 and that's it.

Check this out: Here's a 1080p slow mo from 1080i--http://www.realm.cc/upload/Elton/SDI/SDIOvercrank1080p.mov

Also in PhotoJPEG QT

To bad Canon went the HDV route. If it had a better codec with direct to disc system it would be more intresting. But no matter how good SDI pictures look it aint gonna be practical for me.

(not counting the pricetag) ;)

What's practical for filmmaking? Only tape, Firstore or P2 for run-and-gun?

I never suggested it was easy to go the computer tethered route but for shoots with a substantial crew it's not such a stretch.

Barlow, that pic above is so high-res and so beautiful, I made it my desktop background picture :-)

:-) Your kids were good sports about the whole thing, that's for sure.

that looks very nice. Reds are jaggy? why? 24F? or jsut Jpeg compression.

That's the issue with DVCPRO HD and saturated reds. I think it might be more to do with FCP/QT not performing chroma smoothing upon output. When I make conversions to other codecs I often get blockies in somewhat intense reds. It's really not there with other colors for some reason. I've seen this with DVCPRO 50 from the 2/3" SDX900 too.

The same scene recorded to Sheer yields much smoother conversions to other codecs. More chroma info too.
