LMfao.

Dude I read the name Miko Hughes and was like...

"huh.. i wonder if that's the dead kid from Pet Semetary".

I love you mommy.... I love you.

No fair. No fair no fair no fair!

Jack Daniel Stanley

Yeah... I just saw that too!

Holy Crap ... Miko Hughs is the kid from Mercury Rising and Pet Cemetery and about another jillion things ... great actor and I still quote that line all the time ..
"I play wif mommy, and I play wif daddy .... now I wanna play wif yoooooouuuuuuu"
With a cast like this I have to quote another Cage/Pet Cemetery line
"No fair" :)
And we know what Kimko and David can do ... wow.
The only reason I wouldn't want this cast is that I'm so absent minded and distracted on set that having actors named Kimko and Miko would probably totally fry my brain, lol

Dude I used to quote that line when I was younger ALL the time.

I remember my Uncle used to love watching that movie just to see the little kid "get his ass beat". That was his quote.

lol. Yea, Miko is a great guy. I remember he freaked me out in Pet Semetary when I was a kid. Then he freaked Bruce Willis out when he predicted that Bruce would play in a movie about an alien invasion:

Yeah, we are lucky and have some impressive talent for this project. Miko, David and Robert's work is well know, and Nathan is one of the finest actors I have ever had the privilege to watch work. The three ladies are the results of nearly 1500 submissions and a serious sorting / audition process.

Our talent are all professionals and I have nothing but respect for the final cast decisions. Now it is up us lowly filmmakers to live up to their potential. I hope not to embarrass myself.

The fun begins in less than 24 hours...

First night, in the can. Or in the deck.

Tim, straight home to the computer...I'm impressed. I had to get some sleep first (4 hours). As Tim pointed out we have the first day out of the way. I haven't seen the playback yet, but if it looks as good as it did on the monitor, I'm going to be really happy.

Everyone stepped up, did a great job, and kicked ass. We didn't quite finish all we wanted. But then we were in the shake out process, getting to know each other and what not. Traffic affected almost everyone (so we started a little late), but now they're captives so that won't be problem today. We're starting a little earlier today, and based on how things went during the second half of last night's shoot, I have every confidence we're gonna be able to wrap on time, with perhaps some extra shots.

If by "...lens adapter" you are referring to a focus screen projection device (mini35, etc), the answer is no. This project was shoot with an anamorphic equipped dvx and a number of in camera setup choices. The grain is somewhat exaggerated by the fact that the posts are .jpgs and suffer a bit compared to the original image sequence.

This was a very fast moving set mandated by the limited time we had access to the location. I was very pleased that we used all professional actors, they made the entire project a true pleasure.

After the first evening of shooting and with the aid of our 1st A/D (who has a ton of experience doing script coverage for major studios), we changed the strategy a bit and I was able to reduce the number of setups and increase our page coverage on the second night. At just about 5 AM on day two at our first location, photography came to an abrupt stop when our genny ran out of fuel (for the third time) and we had depleted our on location reserves. It was too late to get another fuel run, so we stopped a bit short on the coverage for the last scene.

Our third day (first daylight hours shooting) was only hindered by the accumulated lack of sleep (about 6 hours in the previous 48 for me) but our talent that day made the experience very tolerable by being a real trouper (closed set due to content) by being very professional and a genuine great person to work with.

Just got back this evening from a meeting with the writer/producer and turned over my first cut along with my EDL to by passed along to the director tomorrow. Scoring, sound design, and ADR will begin later this week.

All in all, a challenging yet very enjoyable experience.

My warmest thanks to cast and crew.

Thanks for all the great grabs, Kevin. I am sure all the actors are going to be ecstatic when they see how you captured their performances.

Kevin really knows his stuff. He came prepared and along with Tim (director) and David Chien (1st AD), they were able to take the story from paper and give it life. We're running just a tad long right now, but after we tighten things up we're going to be just fine.

I cannot say enough about our cast. What a bunch of pros. And the crew pulled together to overcome all the difficulties that invariably crop up.

It's great, knowing we've got the pictures we need to make a movie.

Grabs look great! I did notice that they looked a little stretched vertically. Is it just me?

They are stretched if viewed with a square pixel aspect ratio. The correct PAR for this is 1.2:1. I will repost these images with the PAR attribute removed, should be fine on all viewers then.

Information on lighting setup for 1st screen grab from "Thou Shalt Not"

http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/106/1158084797.jpg

This shot is from scene 6 of our script. This was also the very first shot of the first day of principal photography.

The exterior lighting setup on this consisted of a 1.2k HMI PAR about 100 feet to the left of the frame, 2 ECAs were used as practical’s just under the roof line of the diner, the large tree in the back was handled by an Arri 650 Fresnel (full flood) hidden by the pillar to the right of the door.

The interior illumination was handled by a Lowel Caselight 4 (HF fluorescent, like a 4 bank Kino) hidden in the upper corner of the café of the left big window, there is another ECA in a China ball up near the ceiling line just to the right of the front doors (hidden by the pillar to the right of the door). There are a few other smaller instruments key lighting interior features. The stainless steel back board behind the range is being handled by a Dedo (DLHM4). The back room behind the grill is being illuminated by a PAR16 can with diffusion and red gel.

There are a few stories about this setup that illustrate what one can run into when on location. Unfortunately, I was unable to survey the location before arriving on the first day of the shoot. I was given photographs taken by the director and producer, but these are never as good as seeing things yourself. What wasn’t known to me was how damn windy this place was around sunset (when we would be shooting this scene). This gave me several problems. The first issue was that I couldn’t get as much elevation on the HMI as I wanted due to stability issues caused by the gusting wind. I resorted to using as many 20 lb bags as I could spare and even triangulated the base of the combo stand with another pair of C-stands (also heavily bagged). I compromised and only got the source about 12 feet off the ground. The second issue caused by the wind was that I couldn’t use the large butterfly that I wanted (we set it up, but I didn’t want to tear a big silk, so down it came) to so the source is much harder than I wanted, and to make matters worse, the rental house left the half wire scrims out of the kit so I couldn’t control the hot spotted foreground as much as I wanted. The final insult that the wind threw at us was that switch in the HMI head was really tired and when the wind hit it just right, off it went (and back up the ladder my gaffer went to restrike it).

Next up on the problem list was location power. I didn’t want to use any location power for any of the higher powered devices as this is a really old diner with rotten 2 wire outlets; there was no way I was going to plug an HMI ballast into those outlets. We did have a genny, but again due to the location, I was unable to survey this piece of equipment first. It turned out to be a construction genny (5 kW) which was fine in terms of power, but lacked a sophisticated governor so the frequency was gonna be unstable. I set the camera’s shutter to 60.1 Hz which eliminated the flicker when I was setting up the shot, but by the time we actually began shooting the genny’s speed had drifted enough to negate my careful planning. The location of the camera was across the road (very busy) so I couldn’t get the monitor up (no mains to run it) and the LCDs in the dvx have enough persistence that I didn’t notice that the flicker was drifting back. Just goes to show you that as hard as you try, something is gonna come and bite you in the rear when you least expect it. I don’t think the shot was harmed by this, but it bugs me none the less.

We were spilling enough light out on to the road, that we had to get this shot off quickly as it could have been a traffic hazard to oncoming vehicles, so we got 4 runs at it and had to strike the setup.

Do you think you would add any VFX to the sky? Perhaps some sort of skyline in Post? Looks like a lot of space that could be filled with some stars or distant glow of a city or mountainous backdrop. throw in some skyscrapers and all the sudden you've got a Sci-Fi HOorror :) Just hope that shot was on Sticks or either you have a hella motiontracker artist.

The location was chosen for a number of reasons, but not the least of which was that it is an isolated café on a lonely road (this same location was used in a scene from Kill Bill 2). There is a hill directly behind the café, so more of the shot reads as it should than you might think. The shot was a locked down one, so it would be a simple matter to paint up a few stars, but if I were to do it, I would just strip in a night sky from a very slow shutter shot.

Right now, this isn't a high priority issue as it really won't advance the story line. Thanks for the comments though, glad to see someone bothered to give it a serious look.

Question

On this shot it seems as though the woman is not lit, while the man is lit quite strongly on one side of his face. And a glare is coming off the back metal panel as well. What motivated you to keep her in shadow? Is he the one talking? Thanks.

Brandon,

Everyone clamors for clips or bts. That's the problem with posting clips. They are out of context. I have probably mentioned that in your Smuggler's Ransom thread. It's easy to post a grab but to put it in context is much harder. There are so many things going on and so many choices to make, they usually can't be summed up in a single screen grab. And as you know...no footy. Kevin spent a lot of time on the lighting, as I'm sure you can tell by his earlier post on the outside lighting. Let me say that he spent no less time on the inside and how it related to story. At all times, Kevin kept the needs of the story in mind and produced some great images, which unfortunately are sometimes don't do themselves justice when posted "out of context." I hope that doesn't sound like a cop out but I am thrilled with his choices and how they weave themselves into the fabric of the story. I can't tell you how lucky we were to have Kevin's involvement in this project. His name's on the title line for a reason.

Yep, its a matter of using the lighting ratios to move the focus. Keep in mind that I shot anamorphic so I couldn't get as shallow of DOF as if I hadn't (I will discuss my reasoning for this at another time), so composition and lighting was used to push the focus point around in the story.

"Shirley" (the woman) is lit from a different source, but hers is flatter lighting for this setup and is motivated by the globes that I used on the outside of the café. The story was modified (on set no less) to give us a reason to leave some of the blinds up and some down. This makes all the lighting motivated and gave us different values in different parts of the location. Hopefully all worked to give a realistic lighting scheme that worked to better the story.

The "glare" in the "metal panel" is very intentional (I used a Dado for this). I wanted a fairly low environmental lighting level, but I wanted some things to use the upper range of the dynamic range (limited as it is). This glare acts as a motivated light source for the strong key on "Travis" the cook (though these are different light sources completely).

I will be the first to admit that I didn't have the budget (in terms of actual costs in lighting instrument rentals and also in terms of location time) to get everything exactly the way that I wanted, so as is always the case, compromises had to be made. One of the issues is that we had to overcome was to get the location back to a working diner by 5AM so we could only do so much before we would have had a problem and could have lost our set half way through shooting!

Lets face it, there are a lot of choices you can make when you light a scene, the ones used in this are my choices and I guess time will tell if they served the story well.

Thanks for the great questions. Keep them coming, I will answer as many as I can.

I agree, it's tough viewing stuff, especially stills out of context. I was just curious as to specific choices made :)

I totally agree. And coming from one who is learning, it's great to hear why one does certain things. That way I can think of those things while I'm shooting. Thanks again.

Not nit picking by any means my friend, simply asking questions to further understand choices made, so I can learn more myself :)

Hello Atsuma,

The movie that you are referring to might be "Freaky Faron" which was shot in the Tulsa area. Check this link out.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0475277/

What might explain the confusion is the photograph in my signature line. This is my daughter who played the title role in "Freaky Faron".

To answer your question, all of the lead roles in "Freaky Faron" were cast in California and were played by LA based actors. The remaining roles (supporting and background) were cast in Tulsa.

As for finding Tulsa talent, I know that there are two or three agencies there, in fact, my daughter was offered a booking by one of them when she was filming in Tulsa, but due to scheduling conflicts, it never worked out and she returned to LA without shooting the project (a local market commercial).

If you are looking for the best actors from your area, consider looking at professional guild members (SAG). The office that handles your area is located in Dallas. Go to www.sag.org (http://www.sag.org) and follow the link to its branches to find the Dallas office. There you can find information about SAG franchised agencies and casting directors that work in your area.

Hope that this information helps.

You guys are doing a great job at this "pimp your entry" stuff. I'm digging all the pics. I get Dave for the next fest!

khmuse
09-17-2006, 09:37 AM
Glad that you are enjoying the images and the BTS stuff. David was a real pleasure to work with, a true professional and a real trooper.

The light source that is in the upper corner of the café is a Lowel Caselite 4. Its a HF fluorescent 4 bank (very much like a Kino), in this setup up I used the tungsten balanced tubes.

The really cool thing about this light, and the reason that I own it, is that the head, stand, ball joint, plate, mains cord, and spare tubes all fit into a really compact two part thermoformed case. The down side is the price (it lists for a little under $1600).

http://www.lowel.com/kits/caselite4.html

I used a large variety of different lighting instruments on this project; Dedo, Arri, Lowel, par cans, practicals, China balls, etc. I will post more about the different setups as soon as time allows.

Yeah, the Caselite's are about the only Lowel products that I really like.

Now, if I could just raise enough coin to buy a set of Dedo's I would be really happy.

Dedo's are my favorite sources on fast moving sets, they are so versatile and have a degree of control that no other light can even come close to. Too bad they are so damn expensive. I guess I will just have to stick with rentals for now.

Ralph Oshiro
09-17-2006, 10:10 AM
Dedos are the coolest things ever invented. Too bad they're so #$%!&@$-ass much money! I've been recently renting tons of PARs (PAR20s, especially) for use at my day job. Dirt cheap, and often does the trick for what we use them for.

khmuse
09-17-2006, 10:16 AM
Yeah, I own a few PARs and they can work fine when you have the time to cut them properly. PARs I can afford. Dedos are in a whole different price league. More like the, if you gotta ask how much, you can't afford them!

Have you ever encountered another brand (hopefully cheaper) that even approaches the control that Dedos offer? I would love an alternate choice.

Ralph Oshiro
09-17-2006, 05:58 PM
No. But, I know Mole makes a small ellipsoidal attachment. I've been thinking to check out retail halogen manufacturers. You know, the kind of lights they use at fine jewelry store counters? I think they have condenser assemblies in them. But they're probably based on a low-voltage AC system, intended for track lighting applications. Also, maybe some disco light manufactuer may make something of interest.

I did see one really cool (and very compact) condenser-type light used in an architectual installation in the lobby of the TV Guide offices in Los Angeles. The one I saw was white, and about the size of four PAR20 housings stacked together. It definitely had a condenser. But it was designed to project a 35mmm slide. Very cool, but I never found out the name of the manufacturer.

I am off to London Wednesday afternoon, so the last few details will be in the very capable hands of my teammates. I will follow up with more information as it occurs.

Looking forward to seeing everyones films, I suspect that this will be the best fest to date!

Nothing like a hard deadline to get people moving and out there making a film. Thanks to Jarred and all for giving us the chance to participate.

I just took a look at the latest edit (picture lock) and I've got to say I'm very pleased with the result. A lot of hard work from a lot of people has allowed us to get to where we are and I think everyone of them will be happy with the results. :love4: Can't wait to finish and post it for all to see.

On a side note...I don't think Kevin ever sleeps. He finished the edit last night at 2:30 am...
But then again, I know he's been working against the clock to get it done before his trip to London. Helluva job, Kevin and hoist a couple of pints for me...

Ooh I'm excited for this one.

If I got to work with the adorable little boy from kindergarten cop i would want to pinch his widdle cheeky-weekies all day long. I'm sure he gets that a lot. Will your characterization blow those illusions of him out of the water?

For us, it's really only one week. Kevin's skippin' out on us to go to London for a week. In the meantime, we have to do some sound work on the movie so we can have it ready for him when he gets back.

We do have a bit of the dreaded ADR for one scene that will be required. Our vfx, score and final foley elements are being prepared.

Hey, just so no one thinks I am skippin off to London for a holiday, its anything but! I have two lectures to give and a pre production meeting with a writer, but I am certainly gonna try and grab a few pints while I am there.

Taking a copy of the final cut with me to work on a bit of sound issues while sitting up in the hotel unable to sleep (man I hate international travel).

Yeah, I have had a few ciders over there that are incredible.

One of my favorite pubs is a ways outside of London, called The Royal Standard of England. They have a 900 year reputation to uphold, and in going there over the past 15 years, they have never disappointed. Their Owd Roger Country Ale is so far beyond anything else I have ever tasted, that I can't even begin to describe it.

If your ever there, go and have one or two (thats the most of these that they will serve you at one sitting), its worth the trip. http://www.rsoe.co.uk/

Well, I just received the first pass on the score. I will give it a listen at my hotel this evening and see (hear) how it is progressing. Can't wait to see the vfx shots and when I get back next week, we can get this project finalized.

So far, other than my very serious concern about the SD bandwidth penalty, I don't think we will have any problems making the deadline.

PS The UK Ales are still REALLY good!

UK Ales WILL NEVER DIE!!!! Generally I am not much of a beer fan, but every time I visit the UK I cant get enough pints!!!!!

ps. try some pimm's as well, they do some great cocktails with that stuff (at least they did this summer when I was in London -baby-).

He's talking about how on the last fest, DVX files were limited to 40mb while HVX got up to 150mb...thus, a penalty for using SD rather than HD.

Brandon Rice
09-22-2006, 10:49 AM
oh... right... But that isn't the case in this fest, is it? I think all files have that limit...

Blaine
09-22-2006, 11:12 AM

Actually, it's not been clearly defined for this fest...

Jarred did say the max is 400 for resolution or something like that.

khmuse

Jarred did say the max is 400 for resolution or something like that.

If both SD and HD files are limited to 400 line resolution, then the bandwidth allocation would be fairly similar. If however the file size limits are imposed, then I would disappointed as a 3:1 difference is rather considerable. I would love a clarification and further a bit of understanding as to the underlying reasoning.

This is something like my 10th or so visits to the UK in the recent past so I have become rather comfortable with the concept of finding a decent grain based beverage. Besides the Owd Roger that I mentioned in some post a few days ago, there are some pretty special ales in the midlands. I recall a trip to Wolverhampton for more that a pint or two of their "special - special" ale. Very impressive! I don't recall Pimm's but I will endeavor to locate one or two while here. I know that many say that you can only get great ales outside of London proper, and I would have agreed a few years back, but now that there are more free houses, the options have really open up.

Thanks VersuS for the suggestion!

OK, latest update with just a bit over 48 hours left.

Expecting to receive the VFX sequences this evening. Just put in a really quick set of end credits and the title card sequence. Still waiting for the final score and need the ADR for one more actor.

I expect that the final day will be spent making minor adjustments and optimizing the compression for the on-line version.

Well the first pass at compression is done. I think we can do better, though. This pass through Compressor is about 50% done. With the settings I'm using, Compressor is making 5 passes. I expect this one to be better than the last. If it is, I'll try one last one to optimize out alloted disk space and get the best picture.
