The rankings (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.) are voted on by any DVXuser who has 100 posts or more at the time of voting.
The 100 post requirement is so that no one can have everybody on their softball team log on and stack the vote.
So it's an audience vote by members who have 99+ votes and Mods, whose votes count the same as the members.
The only exception to that is that sometimes there are one or two categories, like editing or special technical achievement, that are chosen buy the mods only.
So the overall vote is basically an audience award, and then sometimes there are a few subcategories that are jury prizes (mod chosen).
The only thing you can count on being consistent contest to contest, however, is the ranking vote by your peers here at DVXuser.
To keep things lively, the sub categories have fluctuated slightly for each contest and while most of these are voted on by members and contribute to your overall ranking, a couple of categories are sometimes hand picked by the mods as I mentioned previously, but again, this changes contest to contest. Past subcategories have included: editing, lighting, cinematography, visual FX, sound effects, acting (an ensemble award), special technical achievement and best original score. Again this is what's happened in the past an the only 100% consistent is the overall ranking vote by members with 99+ votes and mods. (unless Jarred posts and says it will be different this time, lol)

I've already drawn the comparison that Jarred and DVXuser are like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory (and the mods are the Oompa Loompas)

But now I totally feel like a kid in that movie ... one of us will take home the golden ticket!!!!!!!!
... this thread is such a secret still ... not many people have seen it yet or it would be off the hook already ...
... kind of cool knowing that all of these people are gonna get PM's from their buds to check it out, or stumble on it ... it'd be cool to see the looks on their faces ... probably just like Charlie's in Willy Wonka, when he learned of the golden ticket contest.

Holy Sh*t.
I think the competition just got stiffer.
Yeah maybe ... but it's so awesome, that I even feel a little less competitive now ...
don't get me wrong, I still wanna win as much as ever just for the sake of doing well/success and rah rah rah, and all that other Texas football stuff that I was indoctrinated with ...
... but I think I can honestly say that losing doesn't sound so bad because this is sooo ridiculously coooooool and generous that I couldn't help but be stoked anyway that SOMEONE won it ... that that just happened in the world, that somebody was that fortunate and that Barry and Jarred and Pete are that cool.
Woohoo!
Ok I'm gonna try and contain myself for a little while .... http://goldismoney.info/forums/images/smilies/smokin.gif

This is the best community I've ever been a part of on the internet and PROBABLY one of the bests period (outside of my bestfriends and all, because well they rock.)
I can't believe how far you guys stick your necks out and at that, how much of a kick you get out of it. It's truely amazing.
A no entry fee contest, lax rules, open to the public, and a first place prize like this?

Hmm on second thought, if the winner(s) is a team of 2? They have to decide who will keep it... Seems there is a incremental violence factor here... Maybe should be 2 HVXs? Or next fest should be a DramaFest... :violent5:

A free year's subscription to DVXuser.com!!!
Because, between these FREE contests with great prizes, the FREE knowledge base though Barry_Green sells the book and SHOULD be profiting MORE off of it, and the FREE time everyone spends jawing off--
DVXuser should really be a subcription forum.
I've seen lesser forums attempting to charge me money to join. And yeah, I'd pay to play here.
I'm speaking for myself, though.

Jack Daniel Stanley
08-16-2006, 12:35 AM
It probably won't be a camera ... those are the hardest to get, hence Jarred and Barry and Pete ponying up and buying one.
But there are tons of small companies in this niche industry that usually hook us up.
I just won a crane from Bob at SkyCrane for example ... and I make a point of mentioning it here because that dood is awesome.
He went to the hospital with a kidney infection and called me
OVER THE WEEKEND!
FROM THE HOSPITAL!
to let me know that my crane which he was giving me FOR FREE would be going out a day or two late!!!!!
Dood's in the hospital and somewhere in his brain he's saying "gotta let that guy that I'm giving a free crane to know that it will be slightly delayed due to me being in intensive care and all"
I'm just waiting on the crane so I can post a big review etc. I'm sure the crane will be great but the customer service is INSANE already ... wow ...
So the other prizes have typically been dollies and camera bags and stabilizers and cranes and a copy of DVrack once and other cool and pricey stuff like that from great gear sponsors that make awesome stuff ... these companies are of the size that you can usually talk on the phone to the guy that runs the company and they know and give darn about who we are here and what we do ... like Bob at Skycrane and Tom ar Varizoom.
Who knows though ... Jarred's hinting at good stuff so maybe it will be off the hook, but it's always good and always generous.

WWWWOOOOWWWWW!!! That's just amazing you guys. I sure hope I can at least get an entry into the contest.
Side note: I'm in for a small fee for the yearly useage of this great site. Even the most broke of broke filmmakers should be willing to pay for this knowledge base. What an awful prize. I mean, its a great prize, but the people who make a horrorfest flick already have a DVX or HVX. The people with the happy-pappy comsumer cams cant win- so why give an HVx?
TimurCivan
08-25-2006, 07:44 PM
are you kidding??? If youre really serisou about filmmaking you can get a job ( if you dont already have) save up a few huindred bucks and rent a DVX for a few days to shoot your Film. you dont need to already own anything.
If you cant afford renting, go to a film school, and ask the students, im sure most of them ahve a DVX or can tell you where to find one.
If you really wanted it you would make it happen. And stay within contest rules, and if youre good, win the HVX.

I understand what your saying, but what I mean is... all Ive been told since I signed up for DVXuser is that with good writing, sound, lighting, directing, and editing, youve got a good film. The camera is the least of your worries. The rule of only DVX and HVX films contradicts that.
I guess Ill wait a year or two till I can afford one.
Jack Daniel Stanley
08-25-2006, 10:02 PM
An HVX prize doesn't negate the content is king rule. That's still true and that's what we tell people when they whine because they don't have X camera or X piece of gear and think that therefor they can't make their film. Doesn't mean we don't appreciate the best tools when we can get our hands on them and pine for them when we cannot.
Why such an "awful prize" ...
this is a DVX/HVX site ... you know a club for guys that like those cameras ... didn't you get the lodge hat and secret handshake?http://www.frenchquarterfeatures.com/hat2.gif
This is Jarred's backyard. In your own backyard you can have any kind of luau you want.
I have DVX. I would be thrilled to win an HVX.
If someone that already has an HVX wins one will I be less thrilled than if someone who didn't have one wins it ... sure a little, but someone who owns an HVX already can shoot double coverage ... rent it to the tune of $500 bucks a day to finance your films and indie film lifestyle ... sell it and buy more gear or finance a crazy short or a super low budget feature.
The vast majority of people in the community here do not have an HVX so it would be a good prize.
The vast majority of people in the community here DO have a DVX and are therefore eligible to enter and win this fantastic upgrade.
what do you want to be given away ... a Sony Interlaced Only? ... it's a DVX/HVX site lol.
AND
I bet you Jarred will extend a one time only eligible for you. Go shoot your film and if you win then you can take it home.
If Jarred won't go for that then I'll buy you one. So enter as an exhibition film and if you win first place, and Jarred won't make an exception to the DVX/HVX only rule, I will buy you an HVX. :)
Good luck. I look forward to your entry

And Hey PTO ... I don't mean to tease you too much ... I DO get what you are saying, but that's my take on it. :)
And yeah Timur's right a really movtivated individual could get their hands on an DVX and enter - they're everywhere.
Where are you, again? Maybe you could crew somebody's short in exchange for shooting yours.
Also if you put and ad in craig's list that says, DP with DVX for 3 day shoot for horror short you will probably get someone. Even more likely if you can offer $100 a day or so

Even more likely if you can offer $100 a day or so
Thank you for that- Im glad you saw it my way (kinda) and I do understand your take on it.
You were right, I did nothing all summer, no movie made. And I cant make a HorrorFest movie now, school starts monday. You can "told you so" me. I am in the middle of writing a script right now, and hate the way it looks, but this time Im not going to delete it (like I have with all my other feature length scripts). But next year, Ill have a car and a job, so, watch out for pto.
Anyways, good luck HorrorFest Contestants.

PTO buddy --- please never delete another feature script again.
When you do that you make the baby Jesus and the American Indian from that old anti-littering commercial cry.
Most people can't finish a feature script.
If you hate it, keep it on your hardrive a year and then take another crack it.
You may find that your new distanced perpsective on the material opens it up in new ways and you are really able to polish it into a gem.
If you delete it ... well all that work is for nothing. :(

I know, I hate myself for it. But at the time, it seemed like a brilliant idea, putting away the beast I had written away for good. I know I wont anymore, but now I have no ideas. My biggest problem is I am terrified of copying from other movies (too obviously). Everytime I get an idea for something, its too similare to another movie, and I get discouraged, because using someone else's idea is just amateurish.
Im an original person, always with an idea, but now Im fresh out of ideas.

First, because it still sounds creepy- “im gonna go meet a guy at the mall that I met on the internet, who just happens to have the camera I’ve been looking to buy.” And second, I have to get a script done, which is 2 pages in the works, and which all can fit my budget (I hope). :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

DOOOOOOOOODDDDD
My excusometer is in the red zone.
You go meet him WITH your parents and have coffee (or punch in your case - jk)
Once your parents have his driver's license # written down, work it out.
This is what you've wanted all summer.
A guy with experience and a DVX is offering to shoot your movie for you! HELLO! Do you want to make a movie or don't you.
And school schmool. There's 4 or 5 weekends between now and October 1st. Plus when I was your age, the days were 3 times as long as was time in general it seemed. You'll see what I mean when you're my age.
You just need to get your feet wet. Don't worry about being Citizen Kane right out of the box. So here's your assignment.
You have a week to develop a very VERY simple idea. You have one weekend to shoot it. You have two weeks to edit it.

GO ...
No excuses hombre.
Here's your chance to actually BE a filmmaker. What other 14 year old can compete with that when it comes to the ladies this year. Or to use your native tongue: What other 14 year old can compete with that when it comes to the ladies this year, aye?
Can't believe a page or two ago you were complaining that you couldn't enter the contest without a DVX and now someone is offering you the use of the camera AND assistance, and you aren't jumping all over it like white on rice ... what gives?

I agree with Jack. First of all, I doubt the guy has pedophilia on his mind by offering to help you out... :) And how long are your school days? What time do you start school and what time do you get out? It doesn't get any easier when you're older and want to get into this. I have to get up at 8 to be to work at 9 and then I'm stuck there till I get home between 7 and 8 at night. So that gives me about 3 hours to get anything accomplished if I actually want to get a good night sleep. Plus you have your weekends! Most people who have day jobs film on the weekends.

Olright, Jack, you've got me in a tongue-twister here. I have a guy offering me work with a DVX, and Im turning it down. As we speak, I am kind of regretting it. I am making excuses, but (aside from the nothing written part) its the truth. I have had to wrangle my parents just to be able to go to this website, because they dont "trust it" and dont really approve me talking to other people that I dont know... at all. This is my excuse, get mad if you want, but my parents are very protective and very sure about things. I will never, ever be able to talk them into it. I asked them, and they laugh-sneered and said "Do you think we'd actually let you go work with someone you dont know?", and soon after that, they started again with the whole "you never use your camera" thing, though I worship my consumer panny-cam. My folks are VERY leniniant, and I love em to death, and I understand their want to protect me, so I cant say anything. The internet is a mad place when your talking to the wrong people. I bet Mr.Whoever who was offering to do the shooting (sorry I forgot his name) is the safest person in Charlotte, probably the nicest guy, and would be GREAT to work with. Im tangled up in blue, Jack.
The good news- I know this guy in one of my classes who has an XL2 or DVX (im gonna ask him, but I know he has a big expensive sucker), and hes is all into making movies, and so are all his/my actor friends. So, if I can talk him into working with me to make something big, I will be good to go.
Thats my response. Again, everytime I read my posts, it makes it look like I am making excuses to do nothing when I want to do something. I just dont have that power in my reach just yet.
As soon as I have my liscense, and this baby is mine:
http://media.buysell.com/userphotos/0001123582/10202004_3374545136.jpg
(350$)
, I will have more availablity to work with people outside the schoolyard/neighborhood. (Yes, you can laugh at that.) Im off to work on my script some more...
As for HorrorFest, I will pass until next year, probably, because I want to focus on what I am doing now. (Unless the guy with the DVX[?] wants to make a horror, then I will jump on it.
Thanks for the tough criticism- it always helps.

PTO, even if your not going to be entering Horrorfest, at least use the motivation JDS is giving you. You don't have to make a horror movie, you don't have to enter it into any festivals or whatever. But what JDS is saying is just go out and make a movie. If you want to be a film maker, heres your chance. Even if you end up hating your story or getting stressed out with your actors or whatever, you cant beat the experience. You have a camera, so who cares if its not a DVX that doesnt mean you cant make a movie. You can only give so many excuses. Just go out and make something.

Yes but your parents can't meet everyone on the forum.
When they can meet the guy though, then it's no different than taking guitar lessons from someone.
Ben could come to your house and you could shoot the whole thing on premises. I think even if your friends DVX pans out you should both try to work with Ben, I mean look at what you are passing up:
http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/5649/1154365148.jpg
Man oh man if I were you I would be wracking my brain at what kind of idea (SCRIPT) I could come up with to take advantage of this situation.
If you can't convince your parents to let you work with a guy that's only twentyone who will comeover and meet them and shoot around your house then -- wow. Seems like a totally different ballgame when they can meet someone.
Anyway good luck. I'll shuddup now, you'll make a movie or you won't.

Man, your parents are pretty overprotective!
If they're going by the fact that you don't seem to like the little camcorder you have now, show them that's not the case. Go outside and start filming stuff... anything... and then start working on editing your footage using whatever software you have, even if it's Windows Movie Maker of iMovie. Bring over some friends and start filming some scenes from other movies. I have a feeling they'd have a change of heart... :)

While I obviously find it hard to believe that anyone would have a problem upon meeting someone in person and staying on premises, I want to be careful we don't make to light of this issue ... it's a BIG DEAL and I think easy for those of us who don't have kids or aren't kids to dismiss.
DVXuser is an interesting place for many reasons ... we know the expression that boys never grow up their, their toys just get more expensive. Well as a tech loving gender (predominantly) it's only natural that we would have dood's on here from 14 through 100. AND this site is all about mentoring. We get that, but I can see how parent's might not and even if they do might be wary just for the sake of due diligence.

Just a few days ago another girl was found missing because she met someone on the internet. Her parents were with her at the mall, but they went to order drinks, and when they came back, she was gone with him. She was found, but I think that is my point. I cant be sure, at all. I dont really think anyone is a creep on this forum, but the girl who was kidnapped was (as I read) an A-grade student, the president of the student council. Even the smartest of people can be fooled- and I dont want to be a victim. Again, I dont think ANYONE here could be a "predator", because I dont think a "predator" would choose these forums over anything.
I just hope you can see it my way- I am going on the safe side and am going to make a movie with friends, and make the best of that. Until I have my own card, and a gun permit :kali:, I dont see how I can be sure its safe out there. Call me a worrywart- I wont pay it any mind.

Well, yeah, I suppose. I don't have kids, so putting myself in that position is a bit difficult, but there is good reason to worry. Especially with stories about myspace floating around, like the 14 year old girl who almost flew overseas somewhere to meet that one guy. The world has changed since I was that age, that's for sure.

Alright...even though I'm officially not entering this contest with a film of my own (helping another team out instead), I'd like to offer a prize for the lowest rated Horrorfest submission. I've been at the butt-end of a few online contests myself, so I know the pain and glory of coming in dead last. In an effort to ease the minds of those who think they have no chance of winning whatsoever, they can feel good knowing that at least they won something if they come in last place.
If they are actually going to list it, I'll throw in a free paid subscription to Videomaker Magazine for one year to the filmmaker most in need of a little more practice and advice...heh.

I agree, but i don't think that will happen. I like your second idea because everyone gets a fair shake and people still get the feedback from the dvxusers about their film in the scorecards.

Why? Do you think a small panel of judges would be more impartial? I like that the users get to decide. Having judges would almost be like having an Electoral College. Well, not really, but you know what I mean (maybe).

yeah.. Me and Barry put these on as a community festival.. for the people by the people... so to get judged by your peers is the way to go.

I think the members wouldn't be as excited to participate as audience as much either. Here there is no academy, no grand pubas at Sundance ... there is the audience, we the people, only. With out the very enthusiastic viewer support these fests get it would be about 50% less fun as a filmmaker too.
There are good and bad to aspects of this system just like anything else but IMHO for this contest at this time, there's much more of an upside than a downside to audience vote.

I got the OK from Jarred, and we will be donating a Glideshot GS1 (set of 4 dolly wheel assemblies) for Best Cinematography. I'm not sure how the voting works, but I guess you can add Best Cinematography to your voting criteria.
Here's the GS1:

Im prepared to defer to such ambition.

I just replied but I'll let the guys here know too.
My current wheels are off an old pair of rollerblades attached to some random L bracket from the hardware store. I had to do a ton of stabiliation in post, lol.
These would have been my next big purchase (after a p2 card obv.) :)
Thanks so much Michael!

PM jarred.
The arrangement seems pretty informal between the sponser and the contest, so Jarred will more than likely give you their contact info and you can arrange it amongst yourselves.
But you have to take initiative. I've only had one sponsor (Glideshot) contact me after a fest.

Jack invited me to go with him to pick it up, but if I went, I feared he would have a very, very unfortunate accident involving a bus. I'm fairly confident the HVX would have survived though...

I've been going through the motions on the Lease-To-Own program and I'm almost done with the process.
PM me if you have any questions, because-- for some reason-- the actual vendors don't seem to have a clue as to the depth this Lease-To-Own program goes.
It's VERY tasty ... and there's more to it than just Panasonic. =)
